Portrait photography involves techniques like backdrops and lighting to capture a subject's attitude. Famous portrait photographer Steve McCurry is known for his "Afghan Girl" photo from 1994 and for capturing photos of people from different ethnic backgrounds. Steve McCurry and Yousuf Karsh both use editing techniques like adjusting colors to draw focus in their portrait photos. Fine art photographer Andy Small takes colorful nature photos of flowers and landscapes in Britain. Jack Spencer takes dark, mysterious photos of open spaces that create a sense of fear or loneliness. Documentary photographer Martin Parr captures everyday scenes in Britain while photojournalist Don McCullen took impactful war photos including images of soldiers and starving children in Africa.
Portrait, Documentary & Fine Art Photography Techniques
1.
2. PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Portrait photography is a photograph of a
person or a group of people. The techniques
used, such as back drops, key lighting help
you to read the the subject’s attitude.
3. STEVE MCCURRY
Steve McCurry is an American portrait photographer, most associated with the photograph
“afghan girl” back in 1994. McCurry was born 23rd April 1950, in Darby, Pennsylvania.
There is a reoccurring theme
in each of McCurry’s images,
I've noticed that not only is
he a portrait photographer
but he does never capture
images of normal every day
life, he always take pictures
of people from different
ethnic backgrounds who
don’t have the best way of
life, and yet he still manages
to capture the happiness in
their expressions.
4. STEVE MCCURRY
Steve uses editing in most of his images, he shows the significance of the less dominant
pictures to help give focus to certain objects in the images.
In this image, McCurry has brought out the red of this man’s turban. This
makes a significant difference to this photo, as it gives detail and character
to the photograph, it attracts your eyes to that certain image. It also helps
you understand and see the truth behind this man’s smile, the colour red is
commonly know for love, passion.
In this image, the white on the girl’s headband, and the blue in the
girls eye has been brought out, I would say the colour’s in the girls
shirt have been enhanced to possibly brighten the gurl up, as her
skin is quite dark, her skin colour is quite dominant so by enhancing
the others colour's, it focuses your eyes on her clothing instead of
the girl herself, however by brightening the blue in her eyes, it helps
you see the expression behind the girl, a deeper insight into how
she's feeling.
5. Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer who was
known for photographing historic figures, and some really famous names.
Karsh was born on the 23rd December Mardin, Turkey. And sadly passed away,
13th July 2002, Boston, Massachusetts,
YOUSUF KARSH
The pictures are in black and white as colour was
not around all them years ago, but with each
image, certain aspects of the image have been
highlighted using high key lighting.
7. Fine art photography is a unique type of photography that allows the camera
man to take whatever his creative mind wants to.
FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
8. ANDY SMALL
Andy small is a professional fine art photographer, and tutor most commonly known for his
images of flowers, and nature, particularly in the British isles.
The reoccurring theme in these images is that
their all colourful, all summer based. Andy is
known for being fond of nature, and these
photographs help capture that. The simplicity of
these images is incredible, the matter that he can
capture these incredible images at these key times
of the day is remarkable.
9. ANDY SMALL
This image has been captured in broad
daylight. The flowers which are in the
background have been edited to make
them stand out more. This picture captures
a proper British summertime.
This image has been captured in broad
daylight. The background has been
turned to pitch back using editing. The
dead dandelions have been edited to
appear as if they are glowing, this makes
the picture much ore effective as it gives
you something to focus on.
10. JACK SPENCER
Jack spencer is an American fine art photographer, born in 1951, Mississippi, Jack spent his life at
the Berkshire hills regional school in great Barrington for 39 years as a social studies teacher, head
teacher, and assistant super intendant.
Jack spencer’s images have been captured in open
spaces such as the desert, open roads, field etc. The
reoccurring theme in this images is that their all dark,
mysterious and gloomy. As all the images are dark, this
tells us that jack is trying to create a sense of fear,
mystery or evil, all the things associated with darkness.
By capturing a subject whether it be a person, a tree, or
an animal in the middle of a huge empty space, it
creates this sense of loneliness, and combined with the
dark editing , it creates this idea of that subject being
the only thing in the world.
11. JACK SPENCER
This image has been edited to make the lake
running through appear as though that is the
source of light, it has been made to look as though
the lake is illuminating the entire surroundings.
Even the clouds, look as though the lake is giving
them the light.
This image has been edited to direct your eyes towards
the pillar in the the Centre. It has been to look
predominantly darker, this is to give the image a sense
of purpose, and a sense of mystery, as without the main
pillar being the subject, this is image would be mute and
pointless.
13. DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
Documentary photography is a photograph, or collection of images that aren't that significant,
images that just capture the average working person in every day normal life.
14. MARTIN PARR
Martin Parr is a British documentary
photographer. Born on 23rd may 1952, in
Epsom, martin went on to study at Manchester
metropolitan university, before going on to be
one of the world’s best documentary
photographers. Martin’s style of photography is
quite odd because he doesn’t go out in search
for an unrealistic photo that will shock
everyone, he just goes out to capture real life,
relatable scenarios.
15. MARTIN PARR
These images have the same theme, as with most of Parr's
work, this highlights the true British summertime. The reason
these images were noticed so quickly, is because these photo’s
are so relatable to everyone in the UK, not just Brighton
beach where they were taken.
What's brilliant about this photo, is how well it represents
British summertime. This image has been taken so the depth
of field is shallow, with the seagull being the main focus.
Seagull’s are known in Britain for stealing food from people
at the beach, which is why this photo is magnificent.
16. DON MCCULLEN
Don McCullen is a British photojournalist, recognized for
his outstanding war photography. Some of his images,
have stunned many all around the world. Don was born 9th
October 1935, Finsbury park, London. The reoccurring
theme with McCullen’s photographs is that their all war
based, they are all hard hitting, and capture the destruction
in other people lives.
17. DON MCCULLEN
This is an image of a soldier, but not an ordinary one, this man had just
witnessed the brutal deaths of his closest friends, and was sitting in shock,
completely oblivious to don even taking this photo. This image was not
edited and wasn’t absolutely crisp clear, but the picture and the meaning
behind it was so horrific, the picture became not only the world’s most
famous but also Don’s most famous photo.
This is an image of starving children, the albino child being the main
focus, Don did not go to Africa with the intention of taking a photo of
starving children, but during an interview, he said he couldn't’t let this
disaster go on unnoticed.
