Athens
Goverment
The government of Athens originally
consisted of a king, council of advisers
       and probably a assembly.
Peloponnesian war broke out between
sparta and athens leading to the complete
defeat of Athens and its democracy.
The government of Athens in the 5th and
4th centuries B.C. had much influence on
            other city-states.
The government was temporarily replaced
            by an anarchy
Greek General, Pericles said " It is true that
we (Athens) are called a democracy for the
             administration.
Is in the hands of the many and not the
few, with equal justice to all alike in their
              private disputes
"Ruled by many" meant that all citizens had
to be willing to take an active part in the
       government that was the law.
500 names were drawn from all the citizens
               of athens.
Those 500 citizens had had to serve for one
                   year.
Law makers of ancient Athens. One man,
       one vote majority ruled.
Women and children and slaves were not
citizens and thus were not aloud to vote.
After the Peloponnesian war with sparta,
           which athens lost.
Once again Athens was ruled by a small
           group of people.
Similarities
    and
Differences
Similarities
Both sides have a legislative branch and
                voting.
Both have poles for voting.
Both places have authority on if you can
           and cannot vote.
They have to live in Athens or U.S. to vote
they have restrictions to voting only once.
They both gather to discuss laws before it is
                 sent off.
Kids are not allowed to vote.
Differences
Athens system did not have a judicial
        branch like america.
Consuls only have 1 year terms
In the U.S. you have to be 18 to vote. But in
athens only landowning men have the right.
In Athens women were not allowed to vote
or be included in politics whatsoever
In Athens 500 names were drawn to see
      who would help make laws.
Only men can vote for congressmen in
              athens.
In the U.S. Presidents only serve 4 years at
                  a time.
The End
Or is it?
Yes it is!
