Uncork a Memory
Imagine that an invention was created that allowed you to take your favorite memories and place
them in a bottle or jar so that you could relive them later on. They would preserve the smells,
sounds, tastes, sights, and feelings that you had and allow you to go back to those favorite times
over and over again. What memory would you want to put away in a bottle and relive later?
Why is that memory important to you? Use your 5 senses and describe one favorite memory
that you would preserve and explain why you would want to relive it if you could.
Brainstorm your ideas on the back of this paper using the questions I provided for you before
starting your rough draft. After you answer the questions turn them into a paragraph about the
day you were a different age. Then have an adult help you edit your rough draft by looking for
capital letters, correct punctuation and grammar, spelling mistakes, and how well you stayed on
topic. Last, rewrite your paragraph in your neatest handwriting or type it up on the computer.
Make sure to turn in this sheet, your edited rough draft, and your final copy.
REMEMBER:
1. Sentences should start with a capital and end with a period, question mark, or exclamation
point.
2. A sentence should be a complete thought or idea. Your paragraph should have at least 6
sentences.
3. Strong sentences have vivid details.
4. Your paragraph should stay on topic and have a topic sentence, detail sentences, and a
concluding sentence. Don’t forget to indent!
5. All words should be spelled correctly. Have an adult proofread your paragraph before
turning it in.
Here’s an example of my paragraph:
If I was given the chance to relive a memory just by uncorking a bottle I would choose the first night
Mr. Shelton and I spent the night in our new house. We first started moving in before Thanksgiving in
November and the air was crisp and sharp from fallen leaves and fresh cut grass. As we moved our
furniture and boxes in, I remember picturing how the empty house would soon be our new home. Even
though we didn’t have all of our things from our old house, I insisted on sleeping on a mattress in our new
room. That night everything seemed to echo off of the walls as if we were in a cave, and I had a hard
time falling asleep with all of the new sounds coming from outside. The next morning I woke up with the sun
streaming through the sheets we had hung as makeshift curtains, and feeling excited about how the house
would change with our belongings in it. Mr. Shelton went out for breakfast and we at donuts and milk on
the floor of our dining room. The cold milk and sweet chocolate were a perfect way to start a day of
unpacking! I would love to relive that memory because our family has grown so much since that day.
Turn to the back to fill out the organizer.
2. Think of three different memories you might want to relive. Circle the one you would like
to write about.
