3. INTRODUCTION
ZOONOSIS OR ZOONOTIC DISEASES:
An infection or infectious
disease transmitted under natural conditions form vertebrate
animals to man and vice versa.
Many zoonotic diseases, such as rabies or ringworm, Anthrax,
Malta fever, black death, Tetanus etc. have been around for
hundreds of years. Others, such as cat scratch disease, are new or
emerging diseases.
75% of emerging pathogens in humans are considered
zoonotic diseases.
4. CLASSIFICATION OF ZOONOSIS
DIRECT ZOONOSIS: Single vertebrate host. E.g. rabies.
CYCLOZOONOSIS: More than one vertebrate host. E.g. hydatid disease.
MATAZOONOSIS: Requires both invertebrate and vertebrate host. E.g. arboviruses
SAPROZOONOSIS: Inanimate reservoir and vertebrate host. E.g. histoplasmosis
ANTHRAPOZOONOSIS: Animal to Man. E.g. ringworm
ZOO ANTHRAPOZOONOSIS: Man to Man
E.g. human TB
Animal
AMPHIZOONOSIS: Man Animal. E.g. streptococcal
5. MODE OF TRANSMISSION
There are two types of mode of transmission.
DIRECT ZOONOSIS :-
In direct zoonosis the disease is directly transmitted form animals to
human through media such as air , bites, touching etc.
REVERSE ZOONOSIS OR ANTHROPONOSIS:-
Transmission can also be occurred via an intermediate
species, which carry the disease pathogens without getting infected.
Mode of infection:
Animal bite
Contamination of wound by virus laden saliva
Media of transmission:
Saliva Serum
Urine Other body fluids
Tears
6. METHOD OF CONTROL
Dog detention for 10 days, if dies – Rabid.
Pets – preventive vaccination
Destruction of stray dogs
Pets – leash application
Public – health education
7. HOW TO PREVENT ZOONOSIS
Be aware of zoonotic diseases and your potential for infection
Wash hands thoroughly and frequently
Avoid direct contact with certain animals and their environment
Closely supervise children to ensure they wash their hands properly and
avoid hand–to–mouth activities.
Look for and remove ticks from your body. Parents should check their
children for ticks
Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed
by getting rid of items that hold water
