2. Audio Neuropathy
• Hearing loss caused by an abnormality in the
transmission of nerve impulses travelling from
the inner ear to the brain.
• In my case both ears were affected and I
suffered Sudden Sensorineaural Hearing Loss
(SSHL) resulting in profound deafness in both
ears. There is no cure, but cochlear implants
help me to hear via an electrical stimulus.
3. • Identify the parts of the nervous system that
are active in your example
– Peripheral nervous system (eighth cranial nerve)
– Vestibular nerve
– Cochlea nerve
Audio Neuropathy
4. • Describe the functions of the nervous system
that are apparent and/or impaired
– Sensory Input (unable to hear in both ears)
– Sensory neurons are not active
– Cochlear Implant user
Audio Neuropathy
5. • Explain in detail the ways in which this course
has allowed you to better analyze the events
and phenomena around you
– More aware of how I neurologically lost my hearing
– More educated about hearing loss when speaking
to otologist and audiologist
– More aware of why people have neurological
disorders
– More understanding of people with neurological
disorders

6. Optic Nerve Atrophy
• The optic nerve sends all the vision messages
to the brain, if it stops sending messages to
the brain, the optic nerve atrophy occurs. If
the optic nerve is atrophied, it looks pale
instead of pink.
• In my case severe damage to the optic nerve
affected central vision, peripheral vision and
color vision. My vision in my affected eye is
20/800 and I can only see light.
7. • Identify the parts of the nervous system that
are active in your example
– The optic nerve contains axons of nerve cells that
emerge from the retina, leave the eye at the optic
disc, and go to the visual cortex where input from
the eye is processed into vision.

8. • Describe the functions of the nervous system that are
apparent and/or impaired
– Central Nervous system
– Optic nerve (second cranial nerve)
– Sensory Input (unable to see with right eye 20/800
vision)
– Axon degeneration in the retinogeniculate pathway
– loss of optic disc nerve fibers (pale disc)
– Lazy eye

9. • Explain in detail the ways in which this course
has allowed you to better analyze the events
and phenomena around you
– More aware of how optic atrophy occurred
– Realize that there is active research on the subject
– Realize that I unfortunately had an extreme case
– More understanding of people with eye disorders
