Assignment 1 - Essay on VM
For this assignment you will trace the history of virtual machines. The assignment aims to
supplement the materials on basic OS concepts in Unit 1 from last week since it lacks the
coverage on the area of system virtualization. Select ONE virtual machine software as your
subject. The popular choices are Oracle Virtual Box and VMware Series (such as Fusion, Player,
and Workstation). Again, selection only ONE.
Your essay must follow the APA format given in this file (apa.pdf) and include at least the
following information. NO direct quotations are allowed. You must write this essay in your own
words. All sources of information must be cited and listed in the references.

when that VM was first developed
why the VM was developed
what features did the VM have (this should relate back to the previous item)
what are two or three of the major milestones, improvements, and/or extra features that have
been added since its first development
what typical kind of hardware and/or OS does this VM run on originally and currently

Name of VM: Orcacle VM VirtualBox
Introduction: Oracle VM VirtualBox is a general purpose virtualizer for x86-based systems
targated to be used as a server, desktop or in embeded mode.
Release of first version: First version of VirtuaBox was released on January 15, 2007 by a
German company Innotek GmbH under a propreitary license. After some time, it was released as
a Free/Open Source Software under GNU GPL. Innotek was acquired by Sun Microsystems in
February 2008 which in turn was acquired by Oracle Carporation in January 2010. Oracle
rebranded it as Oracle VM VirtualBox.
Reasons for developing VM: VirtualBox was developed to provide a powerful virtualization
product for x86 and Intel64/AMD64 based systems aimed as enterprise as well as home use. One
should be aware that virtualization allows a user to install and run multiple guest operating
systems on a single machine having a specific host operating system. It means if you are having
a Windows or Mac machine, you can also install and run GNU/Linux on the same machine
through veitualization.
