The interest in virtualization has been growing rapidly in the IT industry because of inherent benefits like better resource utilization and ease of system manageability. The experimentation and use of virtualization as well as the simultaneous deployment of virtual software are increasingly getting popular and in use by educational institutions for research and teaching. This paper stresses on the potential advantages associated with virtualization and the use of virtual machines for scenarios, which cannot be easily implemented and/or studied in a traditional academic network environment, but need to be explored and experimented by students to meet the raising needs and knowledge-base demanded by the IT industry. In this context, we discuss various aspects of virtualization – starting from the working principle of virtual machines, installation procedure for a virtual guest operating system on a physical host operating system, virtualization options and a performance study measuring the throughput obtained on a network of virtual machines and physical host machines. In addition, the paper extensively evaluates the use of virtual machines and virtual networks in an academic environment and also specifically discusses sample projects on network security, which may not be feasible enough to be conducted in a physical network of personal computers; but could be conducted only using virtual machines.

The cloud is undoubtedly a major success story, but while extremely convenient in terms of deployment and scalability, it’s become increasingly clear that is it highly inefficient, with services deployed in bloated, wasteful virtual machines (VMs). Worse, such VMs are kept on most if not all of the time, once again wasting resources, driving up both cloud infrastructure bills and energy consumption. We introduce Unikraft, a novel cloud operating system that allows for easily building cloud-ready images fully tailored to the needs of particular applications: Unikraft images boot in a few milliseconds, consume only a few MBs even when running mainstream applications (e.g., NGINX, SQLite, Redis, etc.), and can provide throughput higher than Linux. We will also show Unikraft’s ability to boot images just-in-time, as requests come in, and go to sleep thereafter, further saving resources. Unikraft is an open source Linux Foundation project and can be found at unikraft.org .

There are multiple nuclear import pathways mediated by different receptors. The two most common nuclear import pathways are mediated by the importin / heterodimer or by the importin homodimer. Overmectin has previously been demonstrated to inhibit nuclear import by disrupting the importin / pathway. In this study SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) was transfected into Hela cells and the effectiveness of overmectin at inhibiting its nuclear import was determined. Methods Expression of N protein in the absence of other viral proteins. To investigate the nuclear import of SARS-CoV-2 N protein three constructs were created. 1. pEGFP-NCov2. The N gene (from SARS-CoV-2, isolate BJ04) was cloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pEGFP-C1 (Promega) such that expression of the N gene was under the control of a cytomegalovirus (CMV) polymerase Il promoter to express an N protein fusion with the C-terminal of EGFP. 2. pEGFP. The pEGFP-C1 expression vector alone. 3. EEGFP-TRF1. A positive control for nuclear import. The human TRF1 gene was cloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pEGFP-C1 to express an N protein fusion with the C-terminal of EGFP. TRF1 nuclear localisation has shown to be mediated by the importin homodimer. Hela cells were cultured in 12 separate culture plates at a density of 1 0 5 cells per 9.6 cm 2 plate with each plate containing 2 coverslips.
