5.1 Summaryof Activities :
In summary, a total of 22 Sunday@BGF talks, 13 Dhamma Enrichment
talks by visiting monks/speakers, and 15 Sutta Workshops were
organised. In 2017/8, we decided to focus on Dhamma education by
organising several One Day Sutta Workshops. Our flagship event was
an 8-days Sutta Workshop conducted by Ajahn Brahmali from 29 Apr –
7 May 2017. This was non-residential to benefit more participants. Ajahn
Page 12 of 60
14. Brahmali conducted the Sutta Retreat from 17-21 Mar 2018 followed by
a Meditation Retreat from 22-26 Mar 2018.
Being non-sectarian, our members also benefitted from the wisdom of
Ven Thubten Chodron, USA who conducted a 2-days Teachings
Retreat. Other Vajrayana teachers who benefitted our members included
Khenpo Guru Rinpoche, Geshe Tenzin Zopa, and Anam Thubten
Rinpoche. We also co-organised a Forum with Ven. Wei Wu as the
speaker. Always open to supporting new budding speakers, BGF invited
Nyaninda Bhikkhu who turned out to be a good Dhamma speaker.
As part of Dhammaduta efforts to promote the Dhamma to an
international audience, recordings of Sutta Retreats by Ajahn Brahmali
and Dhamma talks were uploaded into Buddhist Gem Fellowship
YouTube Channel. To ensure that the video’s audio quality was good
enough for broadcasting, a Sennheiser Wireless Transmitter Receiver
unit was purchased. This YouTube Channel, which is maintained by
Dhammaduta portfolio, was created in Dec 2016. As at 1 Feb 2018 it
has 81 videos with 303 subscribers. The most widely viewed video has
had 6,973 views to date.
As of 1 Feb 2018, a total of 442 persons registered with our BGF
Broadcast, an increase of 127 new persons since Feb 2017. The
audience for the talks ranges between 30 participants to over 100 in the
Shrine Hall, even for evening talks. This could be attributed to our efforts
in inviting well sought-after Dhamma speakers, both locally and from
abroad. Some of the speakers were invited 1 year in advance. We are
also very fortunate to operate in an environment where we are fully
empowered to make decisions. This together with our good networking,
has enabled us to confirm visiting monks, such as Ven. Seelananda,
Ven. S Pemarathana, both visiting monks from USA. We are now part of
the Theravada Buddhist Council Malaysia (TBCM), which consists of
over 40 organisations, and the bulk of our practices and teachers are
from the Theravada tradition. However, we have also been fortunate to
Page 13 of 60
15. host several well-known teachers from the Vajrayana tradition who have
their own followings during their talks.
The Dhammaduta team’s unrelenting publicity efforts consisted of over
50 posters in the 2017/8 term accompanied by Website & Facebook
postings, WhatsApp Broadcast, Weekly Email blasts, Quarterly Flyers,
and announcements/posters in the bi-monthly Outreach Newsletters.
Both Bro Lai and Bobby Ng have also attended TBCM’s “Great
Leadership Awakening with Dhamma (GLAD)” Program #3 and we are
both involved in helping to promote the GLAD program among member
organisations in the TBCM as part of GLAD Marketing Taskforce. This
program addresses the serious issue of gaps in the current and next
generation Buddhist Leadership.
Dhammaduta was also involved in supporting the following major
programs which was jointly organised by all Portfolios in BGF:
7-Days Maha Sanghika Dana 1- 7 May 2017 which culminated with a
public talk by Ajahn Brahmali entitled “The Buddha’s Advice for
Harmony within the Community”.

9.1 Coursesand Workshops
9.1.1 Conclusion of the 24th BGF Counseling Course (14 May 2017)
The 24th
Counseling Course ended on 14 May 2017after 8 months. A
total of thirty-nine (39) participants attended Level 1 and 49 in Level 2
(10 new participants joined in Level 2). Seventeen (17) participants
who have attended 70% or more of the lessons were presented with
Certificates of Attendance. Five (5) others have also received their
certificates after they completed both levels. The course will be revised
by removing less relevant topics and adding more contemporary topics
starting from the 26th
batch onwards.
9.1.2 The 25th BGF Counseling Workshop (23 July 2017)
The 25th
BGF Counseling Workshop was successfully held on 23 July
2017 with 61 registrations. Feedback from the participants through the
evaluation forms was generally good to excellent. Consequently, at the
end of the workshop, 24 of them signed up for the 25th
Counseling
Course starting in October 2017, a very good boost for the course.
9.1.3 The 25th BGF Counseling Course (October 2017 to May 2018)
The 25th
Counseling Course Level 1 commenced on 8 October 2017
with Bro. H. K. Loi presenting ‘Understanding your personality types’ to
kick off the program by introducing and using the Myers-Brigg Type

32. Indicator for the participants. The total number of registrations was 44
with nearly 80% signing up for both Level 1 and Level 2. The good
response was the result of good teamwork and publicity by all
concerned, particularly Sis. Lily Chua and the new Exco members from
the 24th
batch. Level 1 of the 25th
Counseling Course had its last
session on 26 November 2017 with the presentation on ‘A Helping
Relationship’ by Sis. Barbara Yen. Level 2 of the course started on 8
January 2018 with Ms. Betty Yeoh presenting ‘Domestic Violence Is
Not a Private Matter’. A total of 44 participants signed up for this level.
Level 2 is due to finish on 13 May 2018.
9.1.4 Marriage Education Program (MEP)
Due to shortage of funds, BGF was unable to get approval to do
another MEP in 2017 from the Ministry of Women, Family and
Community Development. Our previous MEP (15TH
Edition) was
conducted on 1 to 2 Oct 2016 and attended by 16 couples. With the
approval of BGF’s Exco, BGFCU has come out with its own MEP. Sis
Siew Yin Heng is leading the work team to implement this. The
program will be for one full day to maximize participation of couples.
The revised MEP will focus on communications and couple bonding.
The date fixed for the first program is 10 June 2018, and the
registration fee will be RM100 per couple. A follow-up workshop for
married couples (newly as well as long time married) is also being
considered.
9.1.5 Mindful Parenting Workshops (2017)
The ‘Mindful Parenting Workshop’ was arranged by Sis. K C Chiang,
our fully-qualified clinical psychologist, and held in BGF with 2 half-day
weekly sessions on 6 and 13 August 2017. Eight (8) couples and nine
(9) individuals registered for the workshop with 21 attending each
session. The workshop was conducted by Sis May Liu, a clinical
psychologist.
33. After the successful conclusion of the workshop, there was a strong
request from the participants to have a follow-up event. Subsequently,
the follow-up event was held on 18 October 2017 as a full day
workshop. The presenter was again Sis May Liu. Sixteen (16) people
from the first workshop registered with 14 of them being able to attend
the event. The workshop was held along the same lines as the
previous one with a lot of intensive and emotional interactions,
roleplays and a video presentation that dug deep inside the psyche of
the parents attending. Sis. K C will be organising this Mindful Parenting
Workshop on an annual basis on behalf of BGFCU.

trainee volunteers.
(iv) Sharing and feedback sessions among the volunteers.
The whole training is being supervised by Sis. K C with strong
assistance from volunteers from Than Hsiang Mitra lines (who are fully-
qualified counselors themselves). Senior BGFCU helpers also assisted
as facilitators.
9.2.3 Training of volunteers from 2014/2016

counseling, was conducted by Sis Sin Ye on 6 January 2018. Sixteen
(16) participants attended the workshop.
9.3 The BGFCU Telephone Counseling Service
9.3.1 Promotion and Publicity for the Telephone Service
The current calling cards have been modified to remove the address,
and volunteers have been distributing them during BGF events.
Posters and name cards were placed in facilities in other organisations
that have granted us permission.
BGFCU’s Facebook had been updated and served as one of the
channels to promote the phone counseling services. Also, linkage and
cooperation with other BGF portfolios’ Facebook pages have been
established.
Steps are taken to publicize the service through free facilities offered
by social media sources, including Instagram, Twitter, and so on. Many
other Buddhist Centres as well as universities and colleges have been
contacted to promote the service. So far, results have been mixed.
9.3.2 The Telephone Service Operating Hours
The BGFCU Telephone Counseling Service continues to operate using
2 lines (03-78599610 and 03-78599682) from Mondays to
Wednesdays from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Plans are being made to
expand the service from Mondays to Fridays in the later part of 2018.

BGF Youth Connection has organised a number of activities in the past
year with the main focus on the 40th
INCOVAR Dhamma Camp.
There is also a growing audience in the virtual space with the YC
WhatsApp group growing to 50 members. This is a casual, quick &
engaging way for youths to share what’s going on in their lives and
around them. There were also many Dhamma discussions, article
sharing and event publicity going on in the group chat.
YC also saw emerging talents in the field of singing with an ad hoc
choir, ‘Moonlight Band’, performing in the BGF’s Mooncake Festival as
well as at the BGF’s Year End Celebration. Moving forward, there will
be major changes in BGF’s Youth Connection as the more senior
members stepped aside for the newer members to take up positions in
the YC.

13.8 Chinese New Year Celebration
On Sunday, 25 February 2018, the Chinese New Year Celebration at
BGF started at 9.30am with a Puja at the K. Sri Dhammananda Hall on
Level 2 with participation from BGF Members. friends, Teachers, Gem
Kids and Teens together with their families. The morning event began
with a Dhamma Talk by Prof Datuk Seri Dr Victor Wee, entitled
“Gratitude Is the Beginning of Happiness”. The talk centred on how our
parents have selflessly nurtured their children’s wellbeing from birth
and how we as Buddhists can repay our parents by bringing them
towards practicing the Dhamma.
44. The highlight of the morning was the “Tea Ceremony with Parents and
Children” led by Bro Daniel Kwok. After a 5 minute “Meditation
Espresso” session, BGF Members and Parents organized themselves
for the Tea Ceremony. While both the Gem Kids and Teens were
bowing to their parents, parents looked on lovingly and blessed their
children with words of encouragement, praise and well wishes. Parents
were then served tea, while other members helped with the
Photography and Videography. After the energetic Photography
Session with the Mini Lions and Puppy Puppets (made by Gem Kids &
Gem Teens students) to commemorate the Year of the Dog 2018, our
very own “God of Prosperity” (Choy Sun Yeh) made his appearance
spreading joy and laughter whilst distributing mandarin oranges to the
crowd.
Members also contributed with the cleaning and packing of K. Sri
Dhammananda Hall on Level 2, so by the time the Fire Cracker
session on the Ground Floor was ready, the Hall upstairs was already
cleaned. This year, the firecrackers were stringed longer, up to 32 feet
and just as the explosions ended, the D2Y Lion Dance Troupe went
ahead in setting BGF alive with their energetic movements, spirited
drumming and clashing cymbals. A group of delighted children had to
be held back from touching the lion costume as the dancers peeled the
Mandarin oranges on a round tray at the Shrine Hall. Members and
Guests at the BGF Chinese New Year Celebration 2018 ended the
wonderful morning with tossing of the festive Yee Sang (Vegetarian
Salad Mix) to shouts of great health, prosperity and success before
partaking in a scrumptious Fellowship Luncheon, comprising of
Vegetarian Dishes, Noodles and Fruits. It was an event to cherish and

The Building Management and Maintenance Committee oversees the
smooth operation of the building, including repairs and renovations that
would have to be done. During the 2017/18 term, the air condition
circuit board on Level 1 had to be repaired and Indah Water had to be
called to address the flooding of the Lower Ground arising from
blocked pipes. Problems of leakages in Level 2 were addressed by
Vertex, the contractor for the building. As an improvement to the
building, a two-way intercom system was installed in the building in
order to make it easer to communicate with visitors and unlock the side
gate. The building had to be re-wired as a requirement for the two-way
audio-visual system. Plans are underway to renovate the Lower
Ground in order to expand the dining area, increase the number of
sinks and improve the flow of the water outlet. The renovation work is
expected to take place in the last week of March. In addition, BGF has
submitted the plan for the renovation of the rooftop, which is now in the
hands of MBPJ. The BGF centre is very well utilised, especially during
