Bethel Bell6 New Year’s resolutions to Equip New Leaders!
3. Provide resources.
Offer internal training and promote district and
conference training. Also, plan some spiritual
retreats. Provide continuing education for your
leaders. Here are some examples:
Take 15 minutes at church council to do some
teaching or training.
Invite your leaders to read a book and talk
about it.
Create a curriculum and offer a class on
leadership.
Promote district and conference training
events.
If you need a retreat, but don’t have the
time (or gifts) to lead it, invite another pastor or
lay person to facilitate it (and then find a way to
return the favor). ….(article continues on page 2)
Do you want to get your church hopping
in the New Year? Below are six motivating
and inspiring ways to get your new leaders
off to a positive start. When your leaders are
engaged and focused, people in your
congregation and community will become
excited about the church and its ministries.
1. Equip leaders with specific tasks.
Give the new leaders copies of Guidelines.
Each Guidelines booklet provides a solid
foundation for planning and understanding
specific ministries. Be SMART (Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-
Bound) as you set goals, keeping the church’s
purpose and mission at the forefront of your
plan.
Give committees and volunteers plenty of
time to plan and develop their work by using
a ministry calendar or a project timeline.
Once you have a project timeline, plug the
dates into your editorial calendar. Alleviate
stress by giving yourself plenty of time to
create a Vacation Bible School curriculum, or
to coordinate annual events.
2. Offer coaching.
In the local church, it often is hard to break
old patterns of leadership. This may
be especially true if outgoing leaders have
bad habits yet, mentor the incoming leaders.
If church leaders are stuck in patterns that
need to change, enlist someone from outside
to help. For instance, you could find another
United Methodist church that has a well-
functioning worship committee and ask that
chairperson to coach your new worship
chairperson. Some annual conferences have
congregational developers or coaches. Paid
coaches can be expensive, but you might find
funding from your conference’s
congregational development office. Path 1, a
ministry of the General Board of Discipleship,
has a directory of coaches and mentors to
help.

Also, retreat online to save money and involve
more people. Periodically, take your leaders to
national events, such as the School of
Congregational Development or The Leadership
Institute. These events represent good
stewardship of time and money.
4. Thank leaders via e-cards and fun, animated
video.
Get creative and send an e-card or create
a video letting people know how much you
appreciate their time, service and commitment.
You can quickly create fun animated videos
using GoAnimate or Xtranormal. (These easy
moviemaker sites are also great for youth
ministry.)
5. Pray for new leaders.
Commit to praying for your leaders, and involve
others in the prayer process. Identify people
who are called specifically to a ministry of
prayer and commission them to pray daily for
church leaders. Put the names of your leaders
on the church’s prayer list. Go to UMC’s Prayer
Request webpage and list the leaders of the
church for prayer. Encourage your leaders to
pray for each other. Keep your own prayer life
fresh by varying your techniques. A great
resource for different prayer methods is
at Upper Room’s Method-X. Another wonderful
resource to jumpstart your prayer life is 10 ways
to improve your prayer life.
6. Say “thank you.”
Thank your leaders every chance you get and
never forget why they are volunteering — to
serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (to view

GOODBYE BETHELDear Bethel Saints of Our Most High God!
I have served with you since December of last year and I
have loved every moment of it. I came to you as a
Temporary Administrative Assistant from a Temp agency
and turned into your sister in Christ. Now it is time for me
to continue to follow the voice of the Lord. I’m 27 years
old and God has a lot more for me to do in this life. If you
would permit me I will come and visit Bethel United
Methodist Church from time to time and help out in
anyway that I can. I’ve made surprising friendships here
at Bethel that I will never forget.
Please continue to be as genuine, as kind-hearted and as welcoming as you have
been to me in my time here. I will be moving to New York working in the ministry that
God has given me but my family lives near by so I will see you all again. Please keep
me in your prayers as you are always in mine.
“Everyone wants to be someone's favorite hello, and their hardest goodbye
but when God gives you a task there is only one reply.
Yes! Yes Lord, is the answer you give
Hoping that every heart that you leave behind will easily forgive
For in the WILL of God is where we all want to live.” ~ Chelsia Sequoya Bryan
In closing, Bethel I would like you to remember just a few things. Remember to
love and honor your Pastor as he is the assigned shepherd that prays for you and feeds
your soul. Remember to love each other as Christ loves you and please ...oh, please,
remember me.
May God bless and Keep you always,
Chelsia Sequoya Bryan,
Administrative Assistant

Worship
Committee
Meeting
Will be
January
18th at
9:00 AM
in the
Sanctuary Landscaping Committee
Happy New Year from Your Worship Committee!
Worship is a unifying event in the life of the congregation. It's the one time
when all members come together in a common purpose — to worship and
thank God for God’s grace, given to all in Word and Sacrament. Because it's
a unifying event within the congregation, all worship should be coordinated
and operate out of a single set of principles. Effective communication with all
worship-related organizations and ministries (i.e. ushers, office staff,
musicians, altar guild, acolytes, audiovisual, lay readers, Stephen Ministers)
and other groups needs to be facilitated in some way. Bethel UMC has
chosen to involve its lay people in planning/coordinating these worship
activities by encouraging them to work with the pastor and other staff
through a worship committee. The Worship Committee regularly meets on
the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 9:00 AM in the front of the
Sanctuary. All interested members of Bethel UMC are invited to attend.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 18th, at 9:00 AM in the
Sanctuary. During that meeting, we plan to discuss the status of Pastor Joe's
proposed additional service for those that can't attend Sunday morning
services, among other items of interest.

Bethel United Methodist WomenGreetings from the UMW!
2014 was an amazing year for the UMW! We are looking forward to what 2015 has in store. We will kick
off our year with a Vendor Blender on January 31st from 9-3pm. We'll have a variety of vendors to
choose from and the UMW will be doing SOUP AGAIN! Yep, you read that right. Back by popular
demand, we'll be taking pre-orders the start of January. Our meeting this month is on the 19th. There
will be a brief business meeting from 7:00-7:30 followed by an hour of Fun and Fellowship! We do hope
you'll join us. It was
great seeing
everyone at the
Christmas Party!
Stay tuned for more
chances to come and
hang out with a
great, though a bit
crazy sometimes,
group of ladies!
Yours in Christ,
Sheri Goad, UMW
President
BUMMSThanks to all who supported the Christmas Tree Sales, whether buying a tree or helping sell them. In
particular, kudos to Harry Burket, Grant Sharp, Joe Johnston, Larry Teague, John Dworschak, Rich Goad,
Greg Brown, Jonathan Garlock, Aaron Richardson, and all the other BUMMs who came out and
helped. Our sales were again successful this year and will support our charitable activities. We also had
a great time on our fishing sabbatical and everyone caught a big fish (which grows bigger with every
telling) so plan on coming out the next time so you have a fishy story of your own. No future BUMM
plans are firm but we'll be passing the word via our e-mail notice as soon as we get confirmation.
Enjoy your holiday!
Thanks,
Rob Williams

Thank

Society of St. Stephen
Thursday, 18th December UN TRIM A TREE took place as Bethel UMC was filled
with the sights and sounds of Christmas giving from our congregation to our
community. We sorted, counted, bagged, and prepared to share our Christian Love
with some children of Prince William County. Our supported families came with
hope in their hearts and left overwhelmed at your outpouring of food, gifts and
even Christmas trees. We were able to provide all of this to families of the 125
children from the Garfield & Freedom Head Start program, and an additional 15
children and their families.
We could not have done any of this without all those who volunteered to write
the tags, purchase gifts, move toys & food, count food, sort the toys, bag all of it
and then help carry out to their cars. Special thanks go to Cloverdale School, the
UMW & the BUMMs for their generosity and time.
I thank ALL of you for your prayers, time and help.
Thank you, Susan Turner

Vacation Bible School 2015Hello to All!
As many of you already know, I've already been researching and trying to schedule the 2015 Vacation Bible
School.
I want to get a feel for everyone's response to the proposed dates of the VBS. We usually pick the week
after school lets out, but we have some conflicts with that date. It actually works out better this year to do
the next week, but it runs into Fourth of July. There was a good suggestion of having the VBS start Sunday,
June 28th, and continuing through Thursday, July 2nd - 6:00 - 8:30pm (instead of a Monday—Friday). I have
already run these dates by Joe and Debra, Sharon Cox, myself and Jim, and Pam Oakes (she will need
someone to take over on Thursday). I think these dates will work out better for Tonia Parker as well. Please
email me back with your input on these dates. I need to find if these dates work so I can get the dates on
the church calendar and the groups that use our church that week will need time to reschedule.
So what is in the works? The children enjoyed last year's VBS so much that I'm going to stick with the same
publishing company and general structural VBS as last year. Their 2015 theme is EVEREST - Conquering
Challenges with God's Mighty Power. "Embark on an icy expedition where kids overcome obstacles with
God's awesome power. Anchor kids in rock-solid Bible truths that will guide them through life's
challenges." See www.group.com/vbs/everest for more details!

Now that the New Year is here,
God’s Children is continuing
with its four winter sessions of
FaithWeaver Friends. God’s
Children is open to all children
in grades kindergarten through
fifth grade.
FaithWeaver Friends is an exciting program very similar to Vacation Bible School.
Each session your child will sing upbeat songs, play cooperative games, create
special projects and explore Bible stories in wild and wacky ways. The children will
be earning another Fruit of the Spirit “key” and each session they will be given a
“Daily Challenge” to demonstrate what they have learned. We invite you to see
our closing celebration at 5:50 pm and join us for a family dinner at 6:00 pm.
FaithWeaver Friends is continuing to grow and we have need of a new Station
Leader for our Surprise station for this session. We also have at least one opening
for a Group Leader. Please consider becoming an addition to our fun team and see
what faith and joy is brought to the children.
Many children have already registered for the winter sessions after our last fall
session. If you have not registered your child for FaithWeaver Friends and would
like to, please contact the church office. For those that have
registered, please don’t
forget to mark your
calendars with the
following dates and

service. Our prayers were answered when we have already given three of them to
ones who needed God's love and comfort.

knitters, and crocheters are needed.
Our next gathering will be January 27th 2015. from 7 to 8pm in Room 3. Hope to
