2. Laurence Stephen Lowry
• He was born in Stretford, near Manchester
• In 1909 he moved to Pendlebury, which was a very industrial town
• The factories in this town inspired Lowry’s art
• He had a day job and painted in the night
• He studied art at the Salford School of Art
• He was the official artist of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in
1953
• He supported Manchester City Football Club
• There is an art galley in Manchester called The Lowry which has many
of his works

• He drew and painted ordinary scenes like places in his town or a
football match
• The people in his landscapes are called “matchstick people” because
they are very simple
• His paintings are very simple and uses very natural colours
• He also did portraits of people

• We are going to draw a picture of a place in Moaña in the style of

• You can choose from a picture of the main street
• Use crayons rather than felt tips to colour your picture and outline
your buildings with a black pen.
