This document discusses pop music genre conventions through an analysis of music videos and album packaging by Katy Perry, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Pink. What are ‘Symbolic conventions’

◦ One Similarity - The mise en scene is all four videos if
primarily similar apart from a few set design
differences. All four sets are bright and colourful and
use pastel colours and especially pink, which is a main
colour in our music video. These bright girly colours
help show that the music video is targeted to young
girls/teens. The colours also make you feel happy and
upbeat, all four artist aim to be a positive role model
like this.
◦ One difference – is in the costumes. This because of
Star image. Different artists have different looks, hair
and makeup.

What are technical conventions….
Camera - Close ups and ECUs – help build recognition of artists and lyrics. MCUs and mid
shots – to show body language and costume of artist, demonstrate emotions. Tilts, pans and
tracking shots – follow artists as they move around the stage or set. Long shots and wide
shots – to show band in location and props. Crane shots – to emphasise scale of live
audience at concert and add to movement and pace.
Editing- Closely synched with the song to mimic a live performance. Matched to pace of the
song to emphasise tempo and emotion of music. Cut in sync with beat to emphasise
rhythm. Discontinuity editing, jump cuts to create high energy and sense of frenetic
movement.

conventions’
◦ Similarity – the camera shots are varied in all of
the videos. There are lots of wides so everything
can be seen and close ups to see the emotions of
the singer.
◦ Difference – the editing is very similar in Kattie
Parrys video and Pinks. They use lots of fun effects,
cartons etc.. To had a more fun playful aspect to
the video. Whereas Ariana Grandes video and
Jessie Js are mainly simple cuts.

Similarities- they all are focused on the artist and contain most of their
body apart from Ariana Grandes cover. Perrys and Js covers both use
pastel colours as backgrounds reflecting the songs in the albums.
Differences – all the names of the artist are written in complete
different texts, they contain different colour schemes, the photos are
all taken from different angels.

There isn’t many similarities between
the website homepages. They all use
colour schemes that compliment their
most recent single/album. All contain
information about tours and merch.
Differences, some dark colour schemes
and some bright. Different layouts with
different types of pictures, images and
information.

artists I picked I think
katy Perry has the best
star image.
◦ This is because of how
consistent she is. You
know that you can
expect fun vibrant
videos with a twist to
them. She is successful
in portraying a positive
role model with fun
and upbeat music.
