• The city of Kaunas is in the central part of the country.
• The city covers 15, 700 hectares.
• The city’s total population is 295,500 residents.
• Kaunas is officially named the European Capital of Culture
2022.
3. Education in Kaunas
• There are 171 institutions providing general education in
Kaunas: 84 pre-school institutions, 70 schools of general
education, 15 non-formal ir 2 other education management
bodies.
• There are 2461 in-service general education teachers in
Kaunas City municipality.
• The number of students in the schools of general education in
Kaunas City Municipality is 31 822.
4. Kaunas In-Service Teacher Training Centre
• Kaunas in-service teacher training centre (hereinafter- the
Centre) was established in 1995. The centre is a budget body
belonging to Kaunas City Municipality.
• The Centre is one of the largest in-service teacher training
centres in Lithuania
• It is the first Centre in Lithuania accredited by the order of
the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of
Lithuania.
• In 2013 the Centre established, introduced and since then has
successfully implemented Quality Management System
(meeting the requirements of LST EN ISO 9001 Standard).
• The Centre has 25 employees.

• Internship abroad programmes for education
managers and teachers provided by the Centre were
acreditated by the Ministry of Education and Science
of the Republic of Lithuania
• Internship programmes at educational institutions of
Kaunas city are organized and available for
education managers and teachers from other regions
of Lithuania as well as for foreign specialists.
• Internship programmes in Finland, Latvia, Poland,
Ireland, Ukraine, Israel, Norway, Japan and
Germany were implemented over the period from
2014 to 2017.

• In 2017 the Centre first organized the national exhibition
“Contemporary school, 2017“ in Kaunas city. Visitors to the
exhibition got acquainted with the products of the world
leaders in education:

environment corresponding the concept of modern
education, up-to-date curriculum, students’ needs and

on the data analysis and self-assessment of Kaunas city and the Centre
1. Discussion of performance quality with a school community after the external
quality assessment.
Discussing the results of an external quality assessment of a general education school
performance, student achievements and measures to improve them after receiving the
report of external assessment. The aim of this discussion is to present the report to a
school community and to consider the project of a School performance improvement
plan suggested by school administration.
2. Implementation of the Performance improvement action plan and
presentation of the results of student achievements along with measures to
improve them 3 years after the external assessment

implementation of the performance improvement action plan and changes in school
performance with the school community

• The Centre submits proposals and prepares
programmes for teacher training and strengthening
the weakest areas of school performance based on
the data of the external performance assessment.
• The Centre is the only institution in Lithuania
implementing the practice of trainings for schools,
designed on the data analysis.

• Information about the distinctness of the city schools, video
materials of copyright lessons or other educational activities
are available on the Centre website under “Innovative
activities of schools and teachers”.
• Relevant and innovative distance courses for teachers
“Creation of video lessons: sound recording for
presentations, recording screenshots, creating educational
films with the use of presentations” (40 academic hours).

• Training for newly appointed school headmasters or

scenarios and their application in lessons, enhancing the
attractiveness of the learning process with the help of Office
365 tools, smart boards, computers, cloud technologies and

• Strategic partnership Erasmus+ (KA2) project, granted in
2017 “Effective international partnership – success for
every student” (the Centre is the coordinator of the project
involving partners from educational institutions from Latvia,
Norway and Turkey).
31. Projects
• The EU structural fund project 2.4 “Teacher training
for the work with disabled students at general
education schools” was the first project prepared by
the Centre. This project:
– was awarded the certificate of appreciation by the
Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of
Lithuania for an innovative idea;
– was voted the best EU funded project which provided
most benefit for an individual, community and the state;
– was presented the “European sails” award by the Minister
of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania for development
opportunities.
33. Projects
• The EU structural fund project “Improvement of early foreign
language teaching in general education schools of Lithuania”
was voted the most modern project.
34. University of the Third Age
• The Centre has been coordinating various activities and
courses for senior citizens since 2008. The aim of the Third
Age university is to motivate seniors to participate in the life-
long learning process by encouraging their cooperation, self-
expression and dissemination of experience.

38. Traditions
• An annual educator of the award is voted by the Centre. The
winner is usually a teacher closely cooperating with the
Centre during that year and completing his/her mission:
preparing programmes for teacher training, organizing
seminars, consultations, organizing and coordinating
exhibitions, projects and other methodological and cultural
events as well as working in other fields of education.
