1. Welcome to the course!
This course will teach you to read music
in treble clef. That is, any music that
starts with this sign:
Instruments that use treble clef include:
violin flute right-hand of piano
oboe trumpet xylophone recorder
tin whistle mandolin clarinet guitar
2. In Western music notes are arranged on
a 5-line stave:
Where the notes are placed on the stave
tells us how high or low they sound.
The shape of the notes tells us how
long they last.
3. The higher it is on the stave, the higher
the pitch of the note; the lower it is on
the stave, the lower the pitch:
High
Low
4. Western music is formed around a
cycle of 8 notes (an ‘octave’) – this is
the
do re mi fa so la ti do
that you probably know from ‘The
Sound of Music’.
Each of these notes has a letter:
ABCDEFG
5. There are only 7 letters because the 8th is
the same as the 1st:
ABCDEFGABCDEFGABCDEF
G A B etc..
So this is an C
But this is a C too
It’s just a higher C. So it sounds kind of
the same but higher.
6. Each line and space on the stave
corresponds to a letter:
C D E F G A B C D E F G A
7. Some ways to help you learn them:
The notes between the lines spell out
FACE:
8. A way to remember the notes on the lines :
Every Good Boy Does Fine
Now let’s start learning!
