HFMD is caused by intestinal viruses that typically cause fever and a rash on the hands, feet, mouth and sometimes buttocks. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, discomfort and loss of appetite in infants and children. Rarely, it can cause neurological complications like meningitis or paralysis. The disease has an incubation period of 3-6 days and usually resolves within 7-10 days.
