Hand, foot and mouth
disease (HFMD) : common
human syndrome
Cause: highly contagious intestinal
viruses of the picornaviridae family
typically characterized by a mild fever -
- affects infants and children, but can
occasionally adults.
Signs and symptoms:
- fever, feeling tired,generalized
discomfort, loss of appetite, and
irritability in infants and toddlers.
- a rash of flat discolored spots and
bumps followed by vesicular
sores with blisters on palms of the
hands, soles of the feet, buttocks, and
sometimes on the lips
- rarely itchy for children, but
extremely itchy for adults
- HFMD usually resolves after 7–10
days.
Diagnosis: unclear- a throat swab or
stool specimen, The
common incubation period: three to six
days
Complications: neurologic or cardiac
complications including death,
encephalitis (swelling of the brain),
or flaccid paralysis in rare
circumstances

affects not only infants and children,
but also adults occationally.
HFMD has an incubation period of
between three to six days, after which
symptoms begin to appear. The
common symptoms of the disease are
fever, feeling tired,generalized
discomfort, loss of appetite, and
irritability in infants and toddlers. A
characteristic feature is a rash of flat
discolored spots and bumps followed
by vesicular sores with blisters on
palms of the hands, soles of the feet,
buttocks, and sometimes on the lips.
The rash is rarely itchy for children
, but extremely itchy for adults
