3. About the Artist Practicing and exhibiting artist 1960-present President of Moore College of Art and Design Academic Vice President of Maryland Institute College of Art Dean of Cranbrook Academy of Art Moved to southern Spain in 2000, set up studio and workshop, producing wearable art When I moved from the United States to Spain I had planned to continue working as a painter, which I had been doing for some 40 years. However, I began working on silk, which I found very responsive, like making large watercolors and could be easily displayed and then folded and put away, or sent by mail to a client. The idea of wearable art evolved out of these experiments, and soon I designed a collection of scarves, pareos and then wall hangings which have been very well received. Each scarf is unique, I find it difficult to repeat myself, and I love the variations on a theme that emerge from treating each piece of silk as a new design, inspired by a particular theme. Themes are drawn from the landscape of southern Spain, the Moorish culture, the Spanish love of fiestas and flamenco.
4. Design Process Textile for Jacket, Scarf, Wall Piece Wall Hanging Scarf Each scarf design is created directly on the silk. The variations on the themes created are done directly on the silk as well. They are then digitally photographed, and additional variations are developed from the original designs.
5. Multiple use of Scarf Designs Scarf/Pareo/Shrug handpainted on silk
17. Flamenco Fantasia Scarf The Flamenco Fantasia Series has been manipulated in photoshop to develop variations on the theme. It has many permutaions, all of which are potential for wall hanging format.
26. Cueva Series Scarf This scarf became the “source” for wall hanging I continue to use this image from the Caves of Nerja, Malaga Spain
27. Inspiration Series The following slides form part of a series inpired by mineral fragments,
