Students choose nursing as a career because of different values. A desire to help others? A desire for a steady income? A love for technology and science? Flexibility to work anywhere at anytime? Siblings or parents are nurses? Part 1: What value (s) lead you to choose nursing as a career? If more than one value, rank them in order of importance Part 2: Do you think that there are certain values that are incompatible with professional nursing and should be grounds for rejecting candidates for professional nursing? Part 3: As nurses, we care for patients from different cultures, ethnicities, or religions. Providing culturally competent care is vital to develop a trusting nurse-patient relationship. Cultural competence in nursing implies the ability of health care workers to give the best care to patients while demonstrating cultural awareness for their beliefs, race, and values. It entails having knowledge of patients cultural diversity and treating them with this in mind. Cultural competence prepares nurses to empathize, relate more to patients, and attend more deeply to their needs. For Part 3, pick either a culture, religion or ethnicity and provide at least 4 details (may have more) you feel is important to providing culturally competent care. Examples of details may include, dietary restrictions/fasting periods, language spoken, rituals, time for prayer during the day, holy days, place of worship, type of dress/clothing, eye contact/hand gestures, home or herbal remedies, birthing or end of life customs, etc..
