4. THENUKA RODRIGO
• Thenuka’s performance was moving. He embodies the conventions
of a complex character. His violent outrages and his need for love,
creates a paradoxical and perplexing character. His participation in
my AS Coursework will also be taken into account to establish a
link.
5. YUSUF MOHAMMED
• Yusuf possesses the physical attributes of this character. He has a
large muscle tone. His acting was neutral and slightly raw, as in he
was missing conventions of how I want the character to turn out.
He does not bring the emotional ‘irresponsibility’ that defines this
character.
7. KYRA RAIHAL
• Kyra’s performance was fantastic. She has a vulnerability about
her; however, she can show the dual sides to The Woman and how
she needs love. She brought out her best in the audition and her
partner for this audition, as well as her shared good on-screen
chemistry.
8. SARA ABDELAHAD
• Sara, too, has this vulnerability about her that makes her perfect
for the role. She can show that she needs love, but can hide it and
give her significant other mixed signals at time, and that is the
brilliance, I picked up in her performance.
10. CALVIN EDONES
• Calvin is very emotionally stable, so he has the certain
characteristic that allows him to calm down The Woman character
and he’s very loving and can show stellar affection. And when
needed, he can be protective. His audition was very promising.
11. UZAYR KHAN
• Uzayr’s emotion got the best of him, he brought out an emotional
side during his audition, but what really impressed me was his
nature in protecting the ‘girl he loves’. It added real depth and a
real human side to his character. All humans feel emotion and
Uzayr has expressed that in his audition.
12. YUSUF MOHAMMED
• Yusuf also auditioned for this role and he has attributes that also
relate to this character considering that this character challenges
the rapper in a physical confrontation. He can show affection, as
well.
14. • The cast had no idea who the characters were and did not read the
breakdowns. I gave them a brief emotive description of all three
character and ask them to perform various scenes from
films/literature (which have parallels to my characters) as their
audition.
15. THE RAPPER
• The Rappers read Three Hamlet Soliloquys that I had chosen.
Hamlet’s Soliloquys show a contrast in emotion, so I decided to
use that, as it resembles the character. In fact, Space Bound can be
linked to a Soliloquy. A Soliloquy tells the audience about how the
character is feeling and Space Bound tells its audience about how
the rapper feels. Hence, I used a soliloquy.
16. THE WOMAN
• The girls performed a scene with one of the actors. The scene I
used was the scene between Curley’s Wife and Lenny in the barn
before Curley’s Wife dies in the novel Of Mice and Men. Curley’s
Wife is perhaps the most paradoxical character in literature, and I
needed to see paradoxical emotions from my actress (her hiding of
the fact that she needs to be loved and her desperation for love),
hence I had the women act this scene.
