2. The Stone Age
• Newgrange was constructed during the Stone
Age.
• The Stone Age was divided into three parts:
The Early Stone Age.
The Middle Stone Age.
The New Stone Age.
• This part of history was called prehistory.
3. The first people came to Ireland 9,000 years ago.
They got food by hunting animals, fishing and gathering
fruit and nuts.
People made tools from wood and stones, which helped
them to hunt and fish.
Very often, they were not able to find food
to hunt or gather.
4. The New Stone Age
Later on, more people came to Ireland, and brought with
them the new invention of farming.
They were Ireland’s first farmers.
Now people did not have to move around in search of
food.
They could stay in one place and build houses and
settlements.
5. • In the Stone Age, Ireland was covered in
forests and trees.
• Farmers used stone axes to cut down trees
and make space for houses and farms.
• They began growing crops and rearing
animals.
6. • The New Stone Age people were highly
organised.
• They lived and worked together in large
groups.
• The people of the Stone Age built stronger
houses than the hunter gatherers.
• This was because they didn’t have to move
around.
