Hello! Welcome to ‘End-User Refresh Tips - Desktop Overview,’ brought to you by Aventis Systems!
My name is Gerard Henry, National Account Manager here, and I have with me today, Stacey Boogart-Romenesko, who will give us a quick look at desktop solutions for IT professionals that are planning a refresh of their desktop fleet.
Stacey is a Product Marketing Specialist here at Aventis Systems. She uses her technical expertise to communicate specifications and key advantages of products to help IT professionals ascertain the best solutions to fit business needs.
Welcome Stacey!
Thank you Gerard, and thanks to all those tuning in to our webinar.
This webinar is the second in a series that addresses things to consider and key tips for managing workforce PC refreshes.
While this webinar gives an overview for those upgrading desktop fleets, make sure you check out the first webinar of this series if you’re refreshing a laptop fleet.

I’m excited to start our discussion, Stacey! What are some of the prime reasons companies decide to refresh their workforce PCs?
The first reason is simple - desktops don’t live indefinitely, and as a system ages, crashes and stalls become more likely. Desktops typically have a functional life cycle of 2-6 years. Beyond running out of disk space or lagging performance, an unreliable PC means lost productivity and inefficiency in your workforce.
Reason Two. Couple this aging hardware with expired warranty or support contracts, and you’re operating without a safety net. Repairing systems on your own may mean you're spending more time and money on a system than it’s worth. Upgrading to the newest hardware all at once can be less expensive and free up your time for more productive tasks.
The third reason, Operating System EOL has been top of mind for many system admins as Windows XP is over 12 years old and now past end of life. This means Windows will no longer support it with updates or patches, leaving you at risk of security and functionality vulnerabilities. Considering the cost to upgrade an OS on an existing system, this is a great opportunity to step into something more recent.
Finally, newer systems offer advancements in technology for better performance and efficiency. They also offer improved form factors to save desktop space, as well as enhanced security and manageability. You replace your cell phone every 1-2 years, so why are you still using a computer that takes longer to boot than it takes to make a cup of coffee?

Stacey, you make some great points about software end-of-life, overall cost to upgrade, and improved technology. Would you elaborate more on the technology advancements of desktops?
Absolutely, Gerard.
Lets look at processors first -
Although our reliance on mobile devices grows, we still rely on our desktops to do our heavy lifting computing jobs like graphics processing, video games, or video editing. Advancements in system architecture and processing features provide power reduction (great for mobile battery life), allows for overclocking of CPU, RAM & GPU, offers better integrated graphics, and more.
When upgrading desktops, systems with Intel Core i3, i5, i7 generation 1, 2, or 3 are great options.
Next, lets discuss memory -
In the age of apps for everything and cloud-based or browser-based programs, our usage habits demand more memory than ever. Not only do newer systems accommodate more memory, a max of 32GB or more is standard on many, but advancements in memory technology also offer more responsive performance.
Next, let’s look at drives - Advancements in solid state drives have made them more reliable than ever, even as the pricing falls.
Using SSDs in your PC offers a number of benefits over traditional spinning disks, including Improved performance, faster boot times, lower operating temperature, and improved power efficiency.
If you aren’t ready for SSDs, the cost per GB for traditional spinning disks is lower than ever, so higher capacity options are fairly inexpensive, giving you all of the room you need for your files, music, images, videos and more.
If security & manageability is important for your workforce systems, newer platforms will address the increasing concern of data security.
Business class systems in particular are also designed to adhere to corporate policies, which also include robust management features for easy deployment.
New desktop models offer a variety of form factors to best fit your needs, from the ultra customizable tower models to super-dense mini models that take up minimal desk space and have an incredibly small power footprint. For example, the HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Mini is just 1.3” wide and 7 inches in height and depth, and runs on less than 8W of energy at idle!
On the point of screens, Windows 8.1 is optimized for touch screen technology, and all-in-one touch screen systems are gaining popularity. These blend the line between traditional desktop and mobile roles.
