1. Power Controllers Usage and Application
Auto Voltage Regulator or AVR is a device that
regulates the voltage automatically. When there
is varying levels of voltage, it is designed to
stabilize it and make it in a constant level. This
apparatus comes in range of types and sizes.
Small AVRs can be as small and can be installed
on printed circuit boards that has about 1,000 VA (approximately the requirement of a hand-held hair
dryer) and larger. Due to its extensive varieties it is classified into many types including but not limited to
Ferroresonant transformer, Constant voltage regulator, Electromechanical voltage stabilizer, Electronic
tap switching voltage regulator and more.
Here are some of the known functions of automatic voltage regulator:
1. Voltage step up or down. A regulator with step up or down capability can change ostensible
incoming voltage into a new voltage level of output. For instance, it can convert 200V input to
400V output in step up. On the other hand, the step down is designed to lower the voltage output.
2. Single or Triple Phase AC applications. It normalizes the voltage level for triple or single phase
alternating current equipments.
3. Lessening voltage ranges. The device acquires series of voltage levels that are changed to lower
voltage range. For instance, an AVR with input voltage range of +10 percent to -25 percent of
the nominal input voltage will switch the range to a regulated voltage of +3 percent to -3 percent
of the insignificant output voltage.
Auto Voltage Regulator Generator plays important role in generator. It forms as important part of the
excitation system for a brushless generator. It regulates the voltage level in the device and responsible for
under-speed and sensing loss protection features.
There is positive voltage formation from the residual levels through the utilization of efficient
semiconductors in the AVR. It is held capable for providing closed loop control output voltage of +/-
1.0%. The regulator feeds up power from the main stator and also get sample voltage from the output
windings to control current.
With sample voltage, the AVR manages the power in the main field to regulate the output voltage level
while balancing speed, load, temperature, and power factor of the generator.
Servo Voltage Stabilizer is type of automatic voltage regulator. It is designed to control the output power
level. It produces output 230 V ± 1% (Variable 5%) or 415 ± 1% (Variable 5%). The device is an
efficient solution to voltage fluctuation problems. They work to manage the wider range of input
fluctuations to control a particular output power.
Power fluctuations are inevitable in everyday scenario. In order to protect our devices and appliances at
home or in industries, Power Controllers play crucial part in maintaining output level in normal range.
Without them, work and production in factories are affected, appliances at home such as LCD TV could
be damaged and work in the office could be interrupted.
