Yoga originated in ancient India as physical, mental, and spiritual practices with the goal of achieving peace of mind and experiencing one's true self. The earliest scriptural references to yoga are found in the Vedas from 4000 BC. It was more systematically presented by Sage Patanjali around 150 BC.
