1. Facilities Mapping Solution
Provide a way to update mapping information for
facilities and maintenance and get away from
outdated paper maps.

2. Primary Problem & Solution
PROBLEM:
Maps are outdated.
Updating maps is expensive.
Access to maps are limited by
number of physical copies.
Maps are inaccurate.
SOLUTION:
∗ Using Google Maps Satellite Imagery was Cleaner then
County GIS maps and Free (to a 10K hits/month limit).
∗ Using Custom Overlays allows anyone with access to
edit or view.
∗ Able to update and increase level of accuracy with
usage of Tablet or Laptop.
***Phone would be viable, but resolution levels on such a small screen
may be problematic.

3. Business Model & Approach
• The Approach is to simplify usage and facilitate accessibility to
information which is available currently in an awkward format.
• Provide a simple solution to a frustrating task for facilities
management.
• Provide a quick way to get and see multiple layers of data in
moments anywhere.

4. Project Application & Details
• We went with manual manipulation of lines on the Google Overlay.
• This allows quick editing, fast changes, and addition or removal in a
simple format.
• This allows Facility workers access and the ability to Change on
scene with a device.
• Using a Google account to manage the Layers, you can control levels
of access.

5. Digitization of the paper documents was a possibility, but there were
limits to how large an area could be scanned at a time.
Utilization of a picture would be possible, but pushing the data into a
map required a lot of technical mapping skills which were not possible
to obtain in a short period.
Limitations of accuracy will still remain as precision mapping would
require large expense to locate all underground lines.

6. Competitive Advantage & Value
• The exceptionally low monetary cost of this method provides a good
solution to much more expensive options currently out there by third
party mapping companies.
• While there was a fair amount of time to draw out and create the
layers, the technical skills required are quite low. We were able to get
up and running with the prototype layout in only a few hours.
• The fact that anyone with the proper link can access, or edit this
provides flexibility over a paper mapping system.

7. Future Needs & Potential
Professional Locations services to
map all utilities.
Managing account to control access
to edit level or View level.
Higher detail and resolution map to
increase accuracy.
Exact GPS location of lines could be
used instead of free hand drawing.
