How values form

Editor's Notes

  1. No belief is right or wrong. It is either empowering or limiting Ever heard the story of the four-minute mile? For years people believed that it is impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes until Roger Banister proved it wrong in 1954. Within one year, 37 runners broke the belief barrier. And the year after that, 300 other runners did the same thing. What happens if you put an animal in a pond? Any animal, big or small, will swim its way through. What happens when someone, who does not know how to swim, falls in deep waters? You drown. If an animal who has not learned swimming could escape by swimming, why not you? Because you believe you will drown while the animal does not. You have used a computer keyboard or a typewriter. Ever wondered why the alphabets are organized in a particular order in your keyboard? You might have thought it is to increase the typing speed. Most people never question it. But the fact is that this system was developed to reduce the typing speed at a time when typewriter parts would jam if the operator typed too fast. These three cases show the power of our beliefs. There is no other more powerful directing force in human behavior than belief. Your beliefs have the power to create and to destroy. What we believe shapes our attitude and behavior, and if we want to change or transform our lives we cannot truly succeed without changing our beliefs. The Internet is filled with stories about how the power of belief can and has changed a person's life. What is less obvious to most people is how our beliefs determine our day to day reality. Self Limiting Beliefs A belief is merely a perception of reality. What we choose to believe, therefore, determines OUR reality. Our attitude and behaviour change to be in congruent with our beliefs. "Whether you believe it or not, it's true." "Whatever our mind conceives and believes, it achieves." "Your universe begins in your mind." "You can choose what to believe in." It is important to realise that there are constructive beliefs and destructive beliefs. A constructive belief is a belief that expands life and leads to empowerment and fulfilment of life. A destructive belief is a self limiting belief that constrict your life and leads to a loss of power. Unfortunately for most of us, we have a lot more self limiting beliefs that constructive beliefs. This is ONE big reason why we are stuck in our lives and feel as if we are the victims of fate, unable to determine our own lives. The moment we change these self limiting beliefs with more positive ones, our attitude and behaviour will automatically change to be in congruence with our new beliefs, and with that change we will attract new and more liberating possibilities into our lives. Changing our beliefs Changing our beliefs requires effort and persistence. Old habits die hard. Being creatures of habits, there is always an unconscious resistance to change within us. Thus, it is important to recruit as many tools as we can to help us change our beliefs.
  2. Beliefs are: Facts that you are beliving without a question. Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. /Henri Ford/
  3. Truth is a invention of humans. “ I couldn’t do what I want because I’m too….”, “ You’ll never amount to anything” “ I can only be happy if…..” These are typical of the structure of limiting beliefs. These have been taught to us by well meaning teachers and adults by accident, and over time may have been accepted as ‘true’. You might like to consider a belief you currently hold which maybe holding you back in some way before you continue reading.
  4. Environment If you grow up among well-being and success you have better chance to model prosperity. If you have grown up in misery and hopelessness you will likely take your life models from there as well. Albert Einstein: Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions. We are created to generalize our experiences about world and other people. But BELIEFS ARENT FACTS! These beliefs are likely from childhood: What ever is going to happened I will land on my feet! You cant trust (…)THESE kind of people! I’m born as a artist /politician/crook Events We all have events in our life that influence us a great deal. Events can be as individual initiations rituals (marriage, birth of child, death). They can also be community events collapse of USSR. Knowledge Getting new input how to be, what to do and what to believe in, is one of the most powerful and effective ways for changing your beliefs. It can happened in school, training course or by reading books etc Dreaming When all other ways of changing your beliefs is gone. You will have possibility to dream. I have dream that my four little children will one day live in nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have dream today. M.L.King
