3. Introduction
• Air pollution damage to property is a very important economic aspect
of pollution.
• It covers:
• corrosion of metal
• Soiling and eroding of building surfaces
• Fading of dyed materials
• Rubber cracking
• Deterioration of work of art

6.
7. Mechanism of deterioration
• Abrasion: Solid particle of sufficient size and travelling at high velocities can cause abrasive action
• Deposition and removal: Solid or liquid particals deposited on a surface may damage the material
and also spoil its appearance
• Direct chemical attack : Some air pollutants react directly and irreversibly with material to cause
deterioration. E.g.- bleaching of marble by Sulphur dioxide.
• Indirect chemical attack: certain materials absorb some pollutants and get damaged when pollutant
undergo chemical change. E.g.- SO2 absorbed by leather is converted to H2So4
• Corrosion: The atmospheric deterioration of ferrous metals .caused due to presence of moisture.

10. Factors influencing deterioration
• Moisture: increases Corrosion
• Temperature: Affects the rate of chemical reactions and also rate of deterioration.
• Sunlight: Direct deterioration, fedding of dyes, rubber cracing, various photochemical reactions producing
ozone .
• Air movement: Wind direction is an important factor for movement of pollutants ,
• Wind speed can cause abrastion of a surface.
11. Economic losses
• Building material
• Paints
• Testils
• Rubber
• Leather
• Paper
• Glass and Ceramics
• Electronic Equipements
• Laundering and cleaning
• Vegitation
