2. Question 1
Choose 3 genres you could possibly do and write down strengths and weaknesses of the magazines each
1. A large amount of music magazines
have their masthead at the top left
of the cover, which means that the
main image stands out more for the
target audience which is what I
want for my magazine.
2. The main cover line is always clear,
straight and in front of the main
image, while pop and rap
magazines always have the main
cover line either to the side or
slanted.
3. Indie music magazine have a
different variety of people on the
main cover line and the main image
meaning it is more versatile, while
rap magazines usually have
singular black males and pop
magazines have either boybands or
girls
1. Has an easy visual style to replicate for
the project
2. Use of bold fonts and capital letters
make the magazine stand out to the
audience
3. Clear colour schemes can be made
through the type of clothes that rappers
wear
4. Rap magazine always have a central
figure with direct address in a medium
close up, which can be easily created
in Photoshop
5. Rap magazines always have a distinct
and unique layout compared to other
magazines, with writing around the
outside of the image. This is good as I
have already used this technique in the
school magazine, so I have had some
practice which can be put to good use.
1. Pop magazines are always colourful
meaning they stand out to the target
audience of young girls
2. Pop magazines use a higher variety
of media techniques like puff of airs,
headers and footers compared to the
other music genre magazines,
meaning oit will be a more creative
process when creating the magazine.
3. Pop magazines have a particular
target audience meaning it is easier
to create a magazine which would be
suitable for the target audience
4. Pop magazines tend to cover a
variety of different subjects as well as
music.
3. 1) Rap magazines always have a similar
colour scheme due to the clothes that
rappers tend to wear, meaning there is
a lack of variety of the colours that I
can use for my magazine.
2) The magazine always put the artists
name to the side of the main image,
whereas I would prefer to put my main
cover line in front of the main image
3) Bold lettering is repetitive and can be
menacing to people that are not
interested in or dislike rap music
4) All the front covers fulfil the
stereotypes that people have with rap
music and with rappers. This can be
seen through their dress sense, large
sunglasses and golden chains.
5) Rap magazines seem to make the
magazine look disorganised and
slightly unprofessional by layering the
magazine with disconquinted sell lines,
whereas I would prefer to have a main
cover line, 2 sell lines and a footer to
put other artists down.
1) Indie magazines have a very specific
audience and people who are not
interested in indie music will therefore
not like any of the artists featured on
the front cover as well as the main
image.
2) Front covers of indie magazines are very
simplistic and I would therefore would
feel like I am not being creative enough
if I tried to replicate the look of an indie
music genre magazine.
3) Indie music magazine always put the
masthead to the left of the page with a
header on top. However, I would prefer
for my masthead to be central and
across the top of the front cover, with a
header instead of a footer.
4) Sometimes indie magazines use odd
colour schemes. These colours schemes
do not make the magazine stand out
design wise like pop or rap magazines.
1) The front covers of pop magazines
always like childlike due to their target
audience. This therefore to be makes it
look unprofessional, while I would like
my magazine to look professional
2) The font covers of pop magazines
always use bright colours such as pink
and yellow to create a colour scheme.
Whereas I would prefer to use darker
colours or colours that would make the
magazine stand out when on the
shelves, such as red or white.
3) The masthead on pop magazines are
usually in the top left hand corner. To
me this is less attention grabbing to the
target audience so I would prefer it if
my masthead was central as it would
stand out more to the reader.
4) The main cover lines on pop magazines
are always slanted. To me this makes it
look unprofessional as I feel a magazine
is best presented when the text is
straight.
5) The sell lines on pop music magazines
are always unorganised and therefore
makes the magazine look
