1975. During the early 1970s, America was seeing a rapid increase of youth that were displaying
intense acts of violence, and even homicide. In an attempt to understand the potential causal factors

New York State Department of Youth was tasked in preforming a study to define these two
parameters. For the study nine random children who had displayed extreme acts of homicidal
violence were selected to represent the dependent variables. The average age of the group was about
fourteen, with three of the children being African American, two of the children being Puerto Rican,
and the final four children being Caucasian. Each child had bean randomly assigned to the research
study purely on the bases that they had committed acts of homicide at a young age. The first stages
of the study were based around an exploratory design, as the researchers that that point only
intended to discover the potential causes for the violent behavior, with the hypotheses being that the
act of homicide serving the same psychological purpose for all the children, regardless of age,
gender, or ethnicity. To begin the study each of the nine children received a background check,
psychiatric evaluation, and subsequently an IQ test. Expectedly each of the children had come from
home that displayed a heavy drinking atmosphere, an abusive relationship with one or both of the
parents, and parents guilty of neglect. But the results of to the psychiatric evaluation were not what
the researchers had expected. During the evaluation portion of the study each of the children were

In an explanatory research design, the most likely kind of bias is the citation type. In citation bias,
researchers may be reluctant to publish some discouraging findings, especially if they believe that
they may tarnish their reputations or personal abilities and affect the effectiveness of their products.
For that reason, citation bias makes researchers submit positive results only for publication, while
suppressing negative findings. In most cases, the motive of citation bias is to gain popularity or self–
appraisal (Riegelman, 2005). Positive results, also known as statistically significant findings, may
include results that show that a certain intervention is functioning well.
Citation bias is likely to be encountered in explanatory research designs because through them,
causal hypotheses can be investigated, analyzed, tested, and published. Explanatory research
investigates why certain variables are related and it tries to look into the causes of certain

religious instruction, child identity and exclusion. British Journal of Religious Education. 34 (3) pp.

This paper outlines a critical appraisal for a research paper conducted by Cathy Byrne (2012).
Byrnes' paper is an exploratory case study into the impact of segregated religious instruction in
public schools. She argues that segregated religious instruction influences identity development and
may lead to exclusionary behaviours in students. This essay argues that Byrnes' use of an
exploratory research design is an appropriate and useful approach as this method provides the
researcher with a greater understanding of the topic and allows the researcher to gain clarity in

I think by now all of us are witnesses of seeing at least one food advertisement that we come across
whenever we watch TV. Most of the time these advertisements tend to be for fast food chains like
McDonalds or Wendy's. Goris et al. (2010) looked at the television food advertising exposure to
children in six different countries: United States, Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and the
Netherlands. They have gathered the data for six countries through PubMed database between
January 2000 and March 2008. The results that they've got were interesting. They stated that "TV
food advertising exposure was found to be highest in the United States and lowest in The
