Blackboard Boot Camp
Whether you're just starting work on your spring course or putting on
those finishing touches, visit our "BB Boot Camp" for advice, assistance,
or simply a collegial place to work. We will have worksheets, information
and ideas on constructing assignments. The Director of Online Marketing
and Development, Arturo Cole, will be available to discuss
online/hybrid/traditional course design and help with Blackboard or
other instructional technology. Please note, there is no formal program
and there’s no need to make an appointment. This is a drop‐in‐whenever‐you‐can event, starting on
January 10 until January 17, during regular office hours. Coffee, tea and light snacks will be available
throughout the day.
The first Blackboard Boot Camp session for the spring 2013 semester will begin on Thursday, January 10.
Yes, we know this is BEFORE the semester begins, but that is just the time faculty members might need
assistance in preparing their Blackboard courses, especially those who are new to Blackboard. Please drop
by and join us.
The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to offer the following workshops to help faculty use
Blackboard Learn 9.1 and other instructional technology. All JU faculty, full-time and part-time, are welcome

Screencasting with Recording to Support Teaching and
Learning: Captivate

Adobe Captivate is a screen recording software that allows for
the recording of any activity on a computer screen which can
then be produced as videos and easily played in any web
browser. This has opened up a wide range of opportunities for
instructors to easily create instructional content to support

learning in their courses. This workshop will show you how to create short topical screen
recordings, or "screencasts," that can be used to introduce subjects, illustrate concepts, provide
tutorials, guide website navigation, etc., and consider how they might save valuable class time
and/or provide a resource that may be used for review on Blackboard. This workshop is limited to
the first 6 faculty who sign up so please email us ASAP if interested to reserve your space!
Creating Online Learning Interactions Through the Raptivity Software

Learning activities can be delivered over the web to enhance,
supplement and facilitate learning. In this hands‐on session,
you will learn about creating custom learning objects using
Raptivity, the rapid interactivity builder software, that helps
you create true learning outcomes with meaningful
interactivity out of the library of learning interactions that
includes learning games, simulations, brainteasers, interactive
diagrams, 3D objects, virtual worlds, animations, puzzles, surveys and many more that can be
embed right into Blackboard to improve learner engagement. This workshop is limited to the first 6
faculty who sign up so please email us ASAP if interested to reserve your space!
Using Clickers: A hands‐on workshop
Thursday, April 18 (12:30 pm), Johnson Lab
Student response technology is an effective tool that helps
facilitate pedagogical best practices and enhance student
learning. Student response systems, sometimes referred to as
classroom clickers, assist in the engagement of students in the
learning process. This workshop will demonstrate and provide
hands‐on experience for the Turning Technologies Student
Response System which is available through the CTL for use by any JU faculty member. This
workshop is limited to the first 11 faculty members who sign up so please email slantz@ju.edu if
interested to reserve your space.
The purpose of the Tech Lunch and Learn series is to
provide an opportunity for JU faculty to learn about a
broad range of technology topics ‐ from academic uses
to consumer electronics and beyond, while enjoying
lunch with other fellow members. These sessions are

Seven Best Practices and Strategies for Teaching Online
Tuesday, February 5th

This session will familiarize faculty with Chickering and Gamson's
Seven Principles of Good Practice in Undergraduate Education,
and will facilitate the application of these principles to the online
environment. Participants will be able to describe each principle
and select the best strategies and technology tools to implement
the principles in their online teaching.
Planning and Leading Effective Online Discussions

Many experts on student‐centered online learning agree that the discussion
board is the place where some of the most important learning can happen. As
teachers and facilitators, we have to find ways to support students in this
learning environment. Come join us for lunch and let’s talk about all the many
factors we need to consider that contribute to a successful implementation of
online discussion in a course.
iPads in Scholarship and Teaching
Thursday, April 11 (12:30 pm)
During this roundtable lunch discussion, we will explore the iPad and
other similar tablet’s potential as a tool for scholarship and teaching.
We'll share our favorite apps, tips for their application in our
courses, and our frustrations and joys! All levels of users and those
who are curious are welcome to attend. Bring your tablet device if
you have one although it is not required.
Blackboard with Cream & Sugar
Each TUESDAY (from January 22 through
April 23) the CTL will be hosting a
"Blackboard with Cream & Sugar" event
from 8:30AM to 10:30AM. We'll make
the coffee and hot cocoa, you bring the
questions. Come on over to the CTL
where our Blackboard administrator will
be available with hot coffee and tea.
Drop by any time during the 2‐hour window, no appointment necessary.
You can feel free to ask anything, or strike up a conversation with another Blackboard user.
