The Laughing Man Short Story
The Laughing Man My name is Daniel. This story took place over fourteen years ago, For the last
fourteen years I've struggle to truly comprehend what exactly happened over this week.Never the
less I've come to enjoy the thought of what happened. Our story starts in the interrogation of the
Baton Rouge Louisiana police department on October 23rd 2003. "The laugh. His damn laugh" I
Struggled to mutter "Where's the boy daniel?" Chief James asked " We – we can't stay here it, it isn't
safe we have to get out of her–" " Answer me damn it!" Chief James exclaimed slamming his hand
on the interrogation table rattling it, knocking me out of my daze. Then and there I realized there
was no longer a nice cop in front of me. His eye filled with rage as he turned the bright light on the
table straight into my face. "We have a missing eight year old boy and this eight year old boy is your
brother daniel! How dare you sit here and play stupid. Tell me why I shouldn't think it was you huh
look at yourself." I looked down, my shirt torn and bloodied, my boots covered in mud,my eyes
emotionless and my back hunched over due to overwhelming tiredness with my ringing headache it
was a struggle just to keep my eyes open let alone think hard enough to answer the chief's questions.
" Explain what happened, from the start one more time " The chief said and with that I tried to piece
the story together.Around six am in the morning and with a bang on my bedroom door the

The Theory Of Laughter And Humor
On average, how many times a day does the average person laugh? The internet informs us that the
average adult laughs seventeen times a day. While laughing is quite common, have you ever
considered the factors behind laughter? Three theorists– Hobbes, Freud, and Bergson– evaluate the
subject of laughter and humor. In the first few paragraphs of Hobbes' passage, he discusses how
people degrade those they dislike. He then explains how humans desire to rise above others so they
feel superior, making his theory known as the superiority theory. Hobbes believes that by human
nature, witty jokes does not always produce laughter; laughter can be evoked by misfortunes or
obscenities. The essence of superiority then becomes apparent. Hobbes reveals laughter as
hierarchical. Laughter is aroused when others have different intellectual or social statuses. Due to
the fact that men yearn to feel higher in their rank, men dislike to be laughed at; Hobbes states, "[it
is no wonder therefore that men take heinously to be laughed at or derided, that is, triumphed over]"
(66). An example that supports Hobbes' superiority claim is the popular phrase "ain't nobody got
time for that." This phrase originated from a video of a woman, Sweet Brown, whose house burned
down. This video evokes laughter because the lady comes from a lower class home and is now
homeless due to the fire; hence, people feel that she is inferior to them. In addition, Sweet Brown
talks in an uneducated way; this leads

Silliness In Frances Goodrich's Diary Of Anne Frank
In the non–fiction drama, Diary of Anne Frank, by playwrights Frances Goodrich and Albert
Hackett, the characters go through many hardships and problems in the year of hiding. Anne Frank,
a young girl–who was full of energy–had to live in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam, Holland in
the Annex during World War II. At this time, everyone was starving and miserable. The energetic
girl lifted the spirits of the others with her humorous skits and actions. During this time of despair
and strain, the people found a way to laugh. Silliness is a good medicine when it comes to time of
stress. To begin, Peter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, had shown acts of silliness throughout the
time in hiding. On page 715, Anne and Peter are jokingly bickering with each other and entertaining
the grownups. After Anne goes into Peter's room and comes out with his clothes on, Peter chases her
around; he brings up her school nickname, "Mrs. Quack Quack". Anne was called Mrs. Quack
Quack because of her chattiness during class; her english teacher started the nickname. Even though
Anne was getting annoyed, Peter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anne plays tricks on Peter and fools around like the childish girl she was. The first week in hiding,
Anne and Peter playfully argue; "I don't know what you're talking about?" (Goodrich and Hackett

chase each other around as the adults laugh. A few months later, Anne asks Mrs. Van Daan to try on
her coat. After strutting with the coat on, she asks Mrs. Van Daan a foolish question about past
boyfriends. The group seems very entertained by Mrs. Van Daan's story. Last but not least, as stated
earlier, Anne was relieved and acted amused at the camps because of the ability to go outside; she
appreciated the sun on her skin and the breath of fresh air. The theme of silliness has be shown the
most in Anne

Why Does Anjelah Johnson Use Humor
Is it ever funny to joke about how a certain race speaks? In a comedy routine by Anjelah Johnson
she jokes about an interview where there was a spanish and English one the movie "My family
wedding"they said that the Latino cast could do the Spanish interview and the black cast can do the
English interview. Anjelah couldn't do the interview because she didn't speak Spanish. Anjelah
effectively uses humor in this routine to get the audience to laugh about how funny it is that a Latino
can't speak Spanish. First, johnson effectively uses structure in her jokes in order to prepare the
audience for her punch lines.More members of the audience find her jokes funny. For example for
the setup for a later punch line she explains to the audience

Best Memories Research Paper
When most people think of a school they think of hard work yelling teens and just absolute chaos,
but they also my think back to when they themselves were in school or even their first year there as
freshmen and then think of all of the good and funny memories they had there in that year. I happen
to be one of them just thinking back to the beginning of the year and all the memories I have had so
far. Heck, some of my best memories are in school like when my balloon popped in class, and when
me and my friends messed with the plants we were supposed to grow and even when me and my
friends played a few games of UNO in the middle of class. First off, one way I had a great time in
class is when my balloon popped in the middle of biology. One reason ... Show more content on

One reason why this is one of my best memories is that we were super loud. This makes it the best
because we were super loud and our substitute teacher didn't even care, other than when he asked us
if we were done with are working "Are you guys done with your work over there and if not you'll
have to talk to your teacher" but we were already done so we were good. Another reason why this is
one of my best memories is none of us were winning. This makes it the best because we are all
competitive and none of us were winning, Which is kind of funny because all of us were smack
talking each other about who is going to win. Yet I ended up winning and won the next few games
of UNO but they were all pretty lengthy and took us most of the hour to play. This makes playing
UNO in the middle of class one of the best memories because our teacher didn't even care that much
and that none of us were winning even though we were all competitive. Some of my best memories
that i have had in my freshman year are when my balloon popped in the middle of class ,and when
we messed with my friends plant ,and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of
class. These were some of my best memories because when my balloon popped everyone jumped
out of their seats and me and my friends couldn't help but laugh, and when we messed with my
friends plant and we put a crayon in his plant and waterboarded it, and finally when me and my
friends played UNO in the middle of class and our teacher didn't even

'When I Think about Myself' by Maya Angelou: Meaning
Every person have born, grow, do activities, married, have a child, become old and old following
the time, and then die. It is a common life is everyone knows. We, however, have different ways to
think of our life. Maya Angelo through her poem entitle "When I Think about Myself" has shared
the voice of her people and result of the process of thinking or musing life. It is a very interesting
poem because we need to read it twice or more to catch the real tone and story.
When the first you read the poem, you will not recognize the Maya's mean and then be extremely
curious to read it again carefully until you get the real story from the poem. The poem has

The person shows a good spirit through laugh at all ironic that happens in his or her life. In another
word, it shows the spirit of people to survive against all good and bad things that happens in their
life. The second and third line of the first stanza can indicate as the attitude of the person.
I almost laugh myself to death,
My life has been one great big joke,
The person keeps laughing, although she or he thinks that her or his life is just like a joke. The line
"my life has been one great big joke" indicate something that is not very good happens in her or his
life. It has made the person thought the life is joke. Something funny, however, we can feel the irony
in the sentence. The second stanza also emphasizes the tone, a little sad and ironic, and the attitude
of the person.
Sixty years in this folks' world
The child I work for calls me girl
I say "Yes ma'am" for working's sake.
Too proud to bend
Too poor to break,
I laugh until my stomach ache,
When I think about myself.
The tone is increasingly felt in this stanza. It is depicting a sixty years old person who could be as a
symbolical time of a community or a person should be in the lower classes. To continue with his or
her boss is a young girl and she or he should call her "ma'am". The person keeps laughing, but now
the laugh is not only for his or her self. The laugh is in the system that make the person's life

Informative Essay
African Poem Informative Essay "In your ears my song is motor car misfiring stopping with a
choking cough" (Okara 19). This quote is from the first line of the poem "You Laughed and
Laughed and Laughed" by Gabriel Okara. Gabriel Okara is a famous author who spent the majority
of his life in Nigeria. During that time there were many cultural differences between people in
Africa versus people in other parts of the world. In the poem, Okara addresses the reader as a selfish
person who is unwilling to listen to what he has to say about his African culture. Through contrast,
metaphors, and tone Okara expresses the fact that people from other cultures aren't always
welcoming towards African culture. The first important literary device that Okara uses to convey the
theme of the poem is metaphors. Metaphors play a major role in the development of Okara's
message; some people refuse to listen to information about African culture, by making specific
comparisons that help the reader better understand the poem. To Okara, the reader seems to listen to
him as if he were a "motor car misfiring" (Okara 19). This suggests that the reader doesn't care
about what Okara has to say nor does the reader pay much attention to him. The second metaphor
that Okara chooses to use is a comparison between the reader's laugh and ice. By comparing the
reader's laugh to "ice–block laughter" Okara is making a connection to how harsh their laugh is to
the bitterness of the cold (Okara 19). The

Essay On Lady Christie
Candice Elaine Godfrey adjusted the sterling silver necklace and positioned the clasp to the back of
her neck. She placed her palm over the precious stone that dangled just below her collar bone and
gently smiled. She coveted green opals, and she especially desired this one. The matching tear drop
earings were just as lovely, too. They were classy, flattering, and mysterious; with how they glittered
like a mini universe, and how you were always searching their depths for answers. Very much like
she was, in her own right. A mystery. An enigma. A lady who had fashioned her own universe, and
had shaped her own destiny.

When Candice descended the stairs from the loft there was always that moment of pride which
swirled in her chest. The music was adulterous, the neon lights were moody, and the smell of cigar
smoke, alcohol, and body musk was beckoning. She took her time with the metal stairs, letting her
hand slide down the railing as she surveyed the majority of the ground floor. Boulevard 9 was
celebrating its 25th anniversary tonight, and there were streamers, balloons, and tinsel all over the
establishment. There were familiar faces, but most were strangers. Everyone was dressed up in a
little more glam tonight, whether that entailed nothing more then just extra make–up, an extra effort
in casual attire, or extra attention to the little details that attracted greed, lust, and love. It was
marvelous to Elaine, and she smiled.
There was something different in the air tonight besides extra fluff, Elaine thought, and as she took
her usual seat at her usual table, she fixated her heart into discovering what it might be. Elaine had
golden, blonde hair that made Hollywood jealous, and expressive blue eyes. It was easy to
underestimate her as the cliche, dumb blonde most jokes are made of. Sometimes she let them have
their jokes, too, because Duchess Elaine always had the last laugh. She had a heart–shaped face with
a cute nose, prominent cheek bones, and plush lips painted over with glossy red lipstick.
A server placed her usual drink down in front of her, but she ignored it. She

Rear Window, By Alfred Hitchcock And The Last Laugh
The films Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and The Last Laugh, directed by Friedrich
Wilhelm Murnau, both feature protagonists going through change, for better or for worse. Rear
Window features L.B. 'Jeff' Jefferies, a professional photographer who is stuck in his wheelchair, in
his apartment, because of an accident he had while on the job. The Last Laugh features a hotel
doorman that gets demoted to a lesser job, who then undergoes a psychological change. Both films
use elements of mise–en–scene to show how the protagonists adapt and change to their confinement
and isolation. The use of the set, framing, and motifs of doors and windows in both films
emphasizes the idea of the protagonists dealing with change, from freedom to confinement and
isolation.
In Rear Window, the set is used show the freedom Jeff had before he was confined to his apartment.
During the opening scene, the camera pans over and zooms out – through the window – from the
other apartment onto Jeff. The opening scene is significant because it demonstrates how Jeff
confines himself to his apartment; instead, he could be outside venturing in his wheelchair, despite
his disability. Also, the set only consists of the apartment across from Jeff, and his own apartment,
while there are several of buildings looming in the background. This segment of the setting, Jeff's
apartment and the one across from him, suggests that the set is very enclosed and restricted of
freedom; for no other areas of the

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca'
Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho
Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the
Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and
figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits.
Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his
argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the
name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making
a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By
using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother
use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To
this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title.
Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title
Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on
the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the
lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and
convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and
understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a
defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different
examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own
Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive
tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the
Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by
his argument. The audience could relate to the opinion of Marx and agree with the argument of
Marx. Marx,

How Does Dante's Use Of Violence
Humans love violence almost to the point where it is part of our nature. We have tales of people
being tortured, suicide, and even senseless beatings and humans enjoy it. The stories that will be
discussed use violence in them, but they are not war stories. They are Dante's Inferno, Decameron,
and Don Quixote. In Dante's Inferno we have torture being used all throughout hell. We get
characters that carry their own heads, Popes who are burned, people eating eachother, and many
more grotesque acts of violence. Violence in this piece of literature is used as a scare tactic. Dante
wants us to be afraid of sinning so he shows us this terrible images. He does make the punishment
fit the crime though. In most of these punishments it is almost poetic for how much they
punishments play off of. We get people who are caught up in lust be forever. The scene that puts fear
into one's mind but is not as violent is Satan eating Brutus, Cassius, and Judas. All the punishments
are trying to scare the readers into not sinning. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Poetic Techniques of Wilfred Owen Essay
Wilfred Owen can be considered as one of the finest war poets of all times. His war poems, a
collection of works composed between January 1917, when he was first sent to the Western Front,
and November 1918, when he was killed in action, use a variety of poetic techniques to allow the
reader to empathise with his world, situation, emotions and thoughts. The sonnet form, para–
rhymes, ironic titles, voice, and various imagery used by Owen grasp the prominent central idea of
the complete futility of war as well as explore underlying themes such as the massive waste of
young lives, the horrors of war, the hopelessness of war and the loss of religion. These can be seen
in the three poems, 'Anthem for Doomed Youth', 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' and ... Show more content

Para–rhymes, in Owen's poetry, generate a sense of incompleteness while creating a pessimistic,
gloomy effect to give an impression of sombreness. Strong rhyming schemes are often interrupted
unexpectedly with a para–rhyme to incorporate doubt to every aspect of this Great War. Who are the
real villains and why are hundreds of thousands of lives being wasted in a war with no meaning? In
'Anthem for Doomed Youth', the consistent sonnet rhyming scheme is disturbed by a half rhyme,
"guns ... orisons", to show how the soldiers all died alone with only the weapons that killed them by
their side, and a visual rhyme, "all ... pall" to indicate that the reality of war is entirely the opposite
to what it seems – no glory, no joy and no heroism, but only death and destruction. Owen
occasionally works with this technique in a reverse approach to create similar thought. For instance,
the assonance, consonance and half rhyme based poem, 'The Last Laugh', contains an unforeseen
full rhyme, "moaned ... groaned", to emphasise that nothing is ever fixed in war except the ghastly
fact that the weapons are the true winners. Different forms of Para rhymes often work together with
common schemes to ably bring out the main ideas of Owen's poetry.
The purpose of war is again in question through the ironic titles evidenced in most of Owen's
poems. In 'Dulce Et Decorum Est', the sweet and fitting death is contrasted against the bitter and

Summary Of Murnau's The Last Laugh
Friedrich Willhelm (F.W.) Murnau's The Last Laugh (1924) holds a special place within silent film
(Bordwell 2016). It is the film that made Murnau popular with American audiences, and in turn, its
success lead him to move to Hollywood and eventually make masterpieces (not to say that The Last
Laugh itself isn't a masterpiece), such as Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927). Both films evoke
the surreality of life, but unlike the celebratory Sunrise¸ The Last Laugh laments life's predestined
nature. Murnau dramatizes this lamentation through the contrast of the real with the fanciful and
through his use of doors.
From the first shot, The Last Laugh manages to be both hyper–realistic and utterly whimsical. We
are whisked down the elevator and out the constantly revolving door into a city, that while
appearing to be real at first, is just a painted backdrop. But Murnau spares no expense to fool the
audience; he even has figures moving inside the painted towers, which to the untrained eye cause
the towers to seem real. Alas, the towers are fake, but these moving figures serve a larger purpose
than just to be a tool to suspend the audience's belief. They add to the busy aesthetic of the The Last
Laugh. The world Murnau has created is a hectic one where "One day you are preeminent, respected
by all," as the opening title announces, and the next you are a nobody, and before you know it, life
has passed you by. This is the case for our unnamed protagonist (Emil Jannings) who is now

Definition Of Fear Essay
What is fear? Fear is something everyone should overcome. It is something that scares people out of
their socks. For me fear was not such a big thing. I wasn't scared of a lot of things, but one fear I
have is the fear of big bugs. I was always scared of big bugs. Last year, I went to a cabin with my
family and friends during Labor Day. When we got there we started unpacking and I went to the
sink to wash my hands. When I was about to turn on the faucet, I saw a big centipede and I shrieked.
I ran to my parents and told them, but when they came to the sink it was gone. That whole time
when I was in the cabin I was terrified and I always looked out for centipedes. I know that it is
possible to overcome my fear of big bugs but I am not ready now. Although, one day I am going to
overcome that fear. Fear can only stop people from excelling in life. Don't let one fear stop you from
achieving something great.
Sometimes people are scared because they're different. These days, many people don't realize how
much magic there is when being themself. They want to fit in, when they were born to stand out.

pain. I love to laugh. It makes me feel better. The person who has the most memorable laugh is my
dad. I feel that laughter is contagious because when someone starts laughing everybody starts. For
me, a lot of things make me laugh. For example, jokes make me laugh, funny stories make me
laugh, memes make me laugh, and vines make me laugh. For me, going a week without laughing is
impossible. That week would be the saddest week of my life. I've heard laughter is the best
medicine and I believe it is. It makes all bad things turn good. It brightens up our day. Thank god
there is a such thing as

us on to another, it might be similar or entirely different. Thus, today we will tour through living

When we talk about love, we shall say love everything and everyone. Love yourself, who you are,
what you bring to this very world. Generally, Love is all about Love that you love, love your love.
In our appreciation and love for others we lift them, with vivacious joy. This goes for yourself as
well. As you are loving someone, it is actually stimulates your cells by increasing endorphins which
make you feel good, releases stress and makes a path for great decisions. Before loving someone
else, you should learn to love yourself first. It is very important as each of us need t have
compassion and live by ethics and morals. Not being drugged by nonsense stories from the world of
lies. It means that, loving someone more than yourself is a gibberish talk which someone should
never ever have done it. Things like, brokenhearted, cheated, betrayed, misunderstood, and so many
other problems are the challenging thing that love would travel in. it taught you about the real world
of love, the reality, in which perfectly means to just love your love rather than rotten and fake love
out there. Value your love as it is fragile. Indulged within the pureness of love that bring you a smile

101 Ways To Bug Your Teacher By Lee Wardlaw: Character...
There are many different ways to get you to laugh, and to get other people to laugh. In my book, 101
Ways To Bug Your Teacher, by Lee Wardlaw, the author uses various elements of humor, such as
dialect, plot twist, and Irony in my book to make the reader laugh. The end result of my book is
hilarious because of how well the author incorporates these elements of humor. First, the author uses
dialect, or a certain way someone or a group of people talk to make the audience laugh. In my book,
the author designs the character's personalities to be unique and have some of the character's have a
certain dialect. One example, "But hic!hic! You cannot hic!hic! Go!" (P.37) The author makes
Hiccup have an intense case of hiccups that interrupt him when ... Show more content on

First example, "Skip eighth grade and start in the fall at Patrick Henry High!" (P.31) This plot twist
is humorous because of the way the reader would think Sneeze would react, and compare it to a
much real, and humorous reaction that is quite funny. A second example, "Your Mom is pregnant!"
(P.122) This plot twist is also humorous because the way Sneeze reacted which was really funny,
and how he stood up in the middle of class and yelled "WHAT!" was also funny because of the
horrible timing, and how the class reacted. The audience didn't expect that Sneezes mom was
pregnant. For the last example, "It's Fierce Hayley, FIERCE." (P.156) This plot twist is also funny
because the way Sneeze was so shocked to know, and how he tried to act during dinner because he
tried his best to look good so he would get a good grade in her class. The audience would have
never known that the mean teacher is Hayley's dad's girlfriend.
Finally, the author uses irony to make the reader laugh. An example of irony, "...Looked at the
screen with adoration and joy." (P.215) This is funny because of Hiccup's excited reaction, and he
didn't know Sneezes mom was pregnant, and was funny and unexpected because Hiccup lost his
long case of hiccups when he found out. The next example, "Where should I take it?" (P.80) This is
humorous because when the teacher says, "take a seat," It is obvious that she means, sit at your

Reflective Essay About Life
Throughout life, stories are being created constantly. Lives come And go, people making memories
that will follow them to the ends of their lives for the good or bad, and at times things just don't
make sense at all or even you just don't know how to feel about it. That very factor is the reason
why Charles Swindall once said: "Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you react to it".
One person has that power to change their course of history, but you need to know the past to
complete the future, after just 17 years of my life I've learned life is funny like that. For Life is a
sick comedian and only you get the joke.
Just in a very instant, a life can be taken away, even yours, like nothing. It's something we tend to
ignore and continue our everyday lives, but once someone else's life is taken away, it's then we are
reminded of our constant Russian roulette of life that we take for granted. I'm guilty of the same
crime, for instance, the passing of my Aunt, I just cannot grasp or understand that concept at all.
Sure, I know the definition of what death is and what it means for someone to die, But the sensation
or feeling of absence and loss just does not reside within me. It's not like I'm trying to say I hated
my aunt at all, I just can't describe the feeling because it's like I feel if I were to go anytime to her
house to visit her I'll see her there. Yet I have this thought that's stuck in my head like a note tacked
to the wall that says "By the way, she's

Anjelah Comedy Act
I guess some people find it funny to joke about race but others don't . In a comedy act by Anjelah
Johnson she joked about how she doesn't speak spanish and imitates a broken english act and also
joked about her last name being Johnson. Anjelah uses humor in her act to make the audience laugh
for example when she was put with the latino cast for the interviews she said ''might as well put me
in the black interview'' because she doesn't speak spanish and also because her last name is Johnson.
First Anjelah jokes about small things like one of the actors that was going be in the movie and on
how she killed Selena in the movie
Selena so that the audience is ready for the punchline. For example she says she moved her trailer
just incase because of how she killed
Selena even tho it's just a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, Anjelah uses word choice to make the audience laugh. For example near the end of the act
kinda like a bit after the middle she uses word choice by saying ''Ay–yiyi'' when she finds out she's
going to be working with America Ferrera and that it's not a joke. This is an example of word choice
because when she says ''Ay–yiyi'' at the same time she was speaking in a broken english voice
because she was reenacting her reaction when she found out she was going to work with America
Ferrera.
Yes ,you can joke about race and how some people may not speak a certain language but don't make
fun of other leave that up to Anjelah and go
See one of her comedy act especially the one that i'm talking about. Maybe if more people went to
Anjelah's shows they would learn not to take offence to small things about race and just go and have

I Believe In Happiness And Happiness
I believe in laughing and smiling. I believe in the laugh that makes your stomach hurt, the laugh that
makes you cry and the laugh that makes you roll on the ground. Smiling is a powerful expression in
this world. A smile is contagious and it makes you feel loved and warm inside. A small gesture like
a smile can go a long way with someone. Smiling can make your day better along with someone
else's. Last year I was given the opportunity to volunteer at a local Special Olympics event, with a
group of my friends, we each worked at different events. At one event I worked at I had to handout
water bottles to the runners after they finished their race. As each runner came to the end of the race
they all had smiles on their faces. However, there was one contestant that came in last place and
started to cry as he crossed the finish line. I went up to him to hand him a water bottle and said,
"You ran like the wind today." he replied sobbing, "I'm not going to qualify for States with this
time." I saw that he was upset with his results so I said, "Cheer up, you still have three more events
to qualify." With those words I handed him my large blueberry slushy. As I walked away I looked
back and waved, he smiled back, and I could tell he was very happy. I felt great and figured even
though he was upset he lost the race a smile had changed his day. I believe it is true that a good
laugh and a smile can make you forget about the bad times and remember all the good ones.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Literary Analysis
Literary elements play a very important role in literature discussed in How to read Literature like a
Professor by Thomas C. Foster. It adds richness to a novel helping convey complex concepts. In
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, Kesey loads the novel with insightful literary
elements that bring dimension to his story. The book is also jam packed with literary devices that
range from Chapter 1: Every Trip is a Quest (Except When It's Not), to Chapter 14: Yes, She's a
Christ Figure, Too in Foster's book. Focusing on Chapter 12: Is that a Symbol? , Kesey fills One
Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with several dynamic symbols that make it facile for his reader to
analyze, interpret and connect to his work. To begin with, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Laughter is evidently found in all four parts of Kesey's book. When Randle McMurphy is
introduced, he holds a genuine feature all the patients are surprised to hear and that is his laughter,
"he commences to laugh...its free and loud... this sound is real....I realize all of a sudden it's the first
laugh I've heard in years." (Kesey 12). McMurphy, a humorous and defiant character is the only one
in the asylum not afraid to laugh and show his joy, making his laughter the symbol of freedom and
defiance. In addition, laughing is a rebellious sound to the wicked Nurse Ratched. It demonstrates
that one is mentally free and not confined by the oppressive rules that she imposes on the patients
and institution. It also represents defiance. McMurphy cannot survive without laughter, it is one of
the ways that he fights imprisonment by society and Nurse Ratched. Moreover, laughter is also a
representation of strength. When McMurphy first encounters the patients, they are afraid to laugh in
the institution, they only snicker and smile, so he takes it upon himself to try to help them loosen up
and laugh. As the patients become accustomed to McMurphy, they begin to let out a few laughs here
in there but not real radiant laughs. Chief Bromden recognizes that the cause of that is because they
are not yet strong enough to laugh, he states "he still wasn't able to get a real laugh out of
anybody...he didn't understand why we weren't able to

The show's co–writer, Neal Brennan told TIME that Chappelle's "indecisiveness" and his growing

onto something, and his concern was not paranoia. Whether or not his sketches were problematic as
he feared, his large, growing, diverse audience made it possible––– and perhaps guaranteed––– that
the reception of his show by some would be problematic. Chappelle had no fears of unfavorable
reception–––that is, an episode that made nobody laugh; again, it was a laugh that set him off! And
he certainly wasn't afraid of controversy––– that is, pushing boundaries for the greater good and
angering television and comedy purists along the way. In the series premiere, Chappelle introduced
the sketch "Frontline: Clayton Bigsby" by saying, "I still haven't been cancelled yet, but I'm working

Do you know Anjelah johnson ? something controversial she has said was that she was talking about
different race people. That may offend people because she was making fun of their race. But the
way she said it was not that offensive because she had said it in a funny way. A thesis she used
superiority because she was teasing hispanics but in a funny way. So the way she said it made it less
offensive than someone else would say it .anjelah johnson effectively used humor to make her point
that there are hispanics who don't speak spanish she does this by using structure such as the

her comedy routine, such as the punchline to make the audience laugh.

Life Poem Analysis
The author Paul Laurence Dunbar wants the readers to acknowledge how he uses concrete and
abstract in his poem called "Life". Throughout his poem he uses concrete to make us feel how
sadness takes over happiness most of the time, another strategy the author uses is abstract he uses it
in a deep matter, he makes you think something that isn't normal that you can't visualize, he uses it a
lot but also combines it with concrete as well. As a matter a fact this connects with something about
my personal point of view so far because I also feel that I can't enjoy life as much as I would want
but there's always another bad side and it's the problems that make you fall in depression and other
stuff that has to do with sadness. However in the poem "Life" the writer expresses his poem by
using concrete and abstract images, he tells us how life is too ironic to fully understand how you
truly feel, but in his perspective sadness lasts more than being happy as well.
In other words the author uses concrete to express how in the poem "Life" you can feel sadness and
can imagine it, during the poem he mentioned " with a smile to warm and the tears to refresh us "
this was an example of concrete when the author said " a smile to warm " you can actually feel a
smile you can actually feel when you're warm, it also goes with the same thing when it says "and the
tears to refresh us " you can feel when you cry also feel the tears like it's refreshing your face as
saying happiness gets erased by the tears when you're getting refreshed. Another well done example
the author used is when he said in his poem " A pint of joy to a peck of trouble " the author basically
just mentioned how a pint of joy goes by so fast and when trouble comes, it comes in a matter of
seconds and sometimes it can happen keep happening instantly, therefore it's concrete because you
can feel the pint of joy where you actually feel the happiness but then he said "peck" means your
conflicts start showing up rapidly. Additionally, he used the same strategy when author said "And
never a laugh, but the moans come double;" this one is pretty straightforward when he said "And
never a laugh" you know when you laugh you feel the happiness. However, if you laugh it's

Volpone – Disturbing or Funny? Essay
'It invites us to laugh at things which with only a slight shift of perspective are troubling and
disturbing rather than funny' The backbone of ' Volpone' is a tale of a dark and absurd world where
twisted, greedy characters deceive and attempt to deceive each other. Despite this bleak situation it
is a very funny play, the humor increases as the characters sink to new levels. This interplay of
disturbing human fault with witty humor does indeed allow us to laugh at situations that are at a
second glance horrific and distressful. This tactic is Johnson's tool for the juvenalian satire of the
play's over plot, we are not independent of Volpone's world as he warns in the prologue:– 'Only a

Here is a man literally worshipping Gold:– ' Open the shrine that I may see my saint' His language is
that of religion and worship, Gold is his 'god', it is 'blessed', 'sacred' he treats it with love and
'adoration'. This is heresy, a mockery of religion and very distorted and wrong to us, we are appalled
as we laugh. However, the darker side still to Volpone's opening speech is that Volpone is not alone
in his warped worship:– 'Hail the world's soul and mine!' Here Johnson makes a serious satirical
point, Volpone, as much as we like to laugh and scorn him, is not alone. Infact, he embodies the
greed and money obsession that is the very 'soul' of our world. This is an example of where the
laughter stops and something truly troubling is revealed among the humour that often reflects on us,
here it is the world's unhealthily fixation with money and it's bottomless greed. This greed comes in
many shapes and sizes throughout 'Volpone' one of the most surprising is Corbaccio, the old man.
Corbaccio's first scene is very funny, the old raven comes to feed on Volpone when infact Volpone
and Mosca are robbing him dry. We laugh as the supposedly dying Volpone makes witty and
disparaging remarks and Mosca's exploitation of Corbaccio's deafness is also fiendishly comical:– '

Personal Narrative: Jemima
My best friend is Jemima. She has many siblings and lives in Fort Worth, Texas. I have known
Jemima since 5th grade and we have been best friends ever since. I am grateful for how natural our
friendship is. She always listens to my boring stories and does not judge me when I tell her
something that I wouldn't tell most people. She has the ability to put a smile on my face on the worst
of days.
I think the quality that I value the most about our friendship is that we share the same humor. There
is not a day that I go talking to her where I don't laugh. We share so many inside jokes, it's crazy.
There will be times in class where we just look at each other and suddenly we get the joke. although

Plato's Allegory Of The Cave
Knowledge is the perception by sentient beings of an upper world filled with ideas and pure forms
of objects instead of the material, real–world forms that these sentient beings sense. Plato, in his
Allegory of the Cave, uses an analogy between prisoners chained in a cave who can only see reality
as shadows on the wall. In his story, one escapes, and discovers the "true" world of reality above,
but when he returns, none of his friends believe him and they say that one would be a fool for going
to the true world of perception. Plato claims through Socrates, "The world of our sight is like the
habitation in prison, the fire–light there to the sunlight here, the ascent and the view of the upper
world is the rising of the soul into the world of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And seen, this must be inferred to be the cause of all right and beautiful things for all, which gives
birth to light and the king of light in the world of sight, and, in the world of mind, herself the queen

privately." In this quotation, Plato is advancing his analogy by saying that the firelight, casting the
shadows in this allegorical cave, is comparable to the sun in our world, casting the perceivable
shadows from the higher, pure manifestations of the "true" forms of objects. According to Plato,
people's souls can ascend or descend among this hierarchy of perception, stretching from the world
of pure essence to the darkest, most distorted form of reality, causing some people who have just
changed states to be "dazzled:" "[W]henever [one] sees a soul confused and unable to discern
anything he would not just laugh carelessly; he would examine whether it had come out of a more
brilliant life, and if it were darkened by the strangeness; or whether it had come out of greater

Thoughtful Laughter in "The Importance of Being Ernest"
The story "The Importance of Being Ernest," by Oscar Wilde is a story built on the underlying
comedy only the careful reader will laugh at. There are many times throughout the story where there
is a hidden joke or message that many will just read over if they don't pay close attention. The three
main instances of this are Wilde's use of satire, the puns that are often used, and the amount of
hypocrisy from the two main characters. In the story, Wilde often shines the light on the modern fact
that people take themselves too seriously. The characters Jack and Algernon show this modern issue
at its fullest. They both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They both use this "Ernest" to escape from responsibilities they have in their regular lives. In all
reality they could do all of these things and just be themselves, but they take themselves too
seriously.
Puns are often used in the story to get a small giggle out of the reader. An example of this is "It is
very vulgar to talk like a dentist when one isn't a dentist. It gives a false impression."
Many times if you are not carefully reading, you will most likely pass over these simple puns.
But for those that take their time when reading there are many puns throughout the story sure to give
you a laugh.
The last example of "thoughtful laughter" is the hypocrisy of the two main characters
Jack and Algernon and their alter ego, "Ernest," who is not at all earnest. This comes to be true

For my Social Norm Project I decided to go to a scary movie at AMC. My friend and I went to the

when it was busy and picked a scary movie is because I wanted to laugh instead of scream at the
scary parts to see what people would do. It is socially normal to scream when you are afraid, but
laughing is normally not a reaction someone would expect. To do the experiment we sat in the
middle of the theater so we would be close enough to the people in the theater and every time a
scary part would come up I would start laughing hysterically. At first it was difficult to follow

The Laughing Man Short Story

  • 1. The Laughing Man Short Story The Laughing Man My name is Daniel. This story took place over fourteen years ago, For the last fourteen years I've struggle to truly comprehend what exactly happened over this week.Never the less I've come to enjoy the thought of what happened. Our story starts in the interrogation of the Baton Rouge Louisiana police department on October 23rd 2003. "The laugh. His damn laugh" I Struggled to mutter "Where's the boy daniel?" Chief James asked " We – we can't stay here it, it isn't safe we have to get out of her–" " Answer me damn it!" Chief James exclaimed slamming his hand on the interrogation table rattling it, knocking me out of my daze. Then and there I realized there was no longer a nice cop in front of me. His eye filled with rage as he turned the bright light on the table straight into my face. "We have a missing eight year old boy and this eight year old boy is your brother daniel! How dare you sit here and play stupid. Tell me why I shouldn't think it was you huh look at yourself." I looked down, my shirt torn and bloodied, my boots covered in mud,my eyes emotionless and my back hunched over due to overwhelming tiredness with my ringing headache it was a struggle just to keep my eyes open let alone think hard enough to answer the chief's questions. " Explain what happened, from the start one more time " The chief said and with that I tried to piece the story together.Around six am in the morning and with a bang on my bedroom door the ... • 2. The Theory Of Laughter And Humor On average, how many times a day does the average person laugh? The internet informs us that the average adult laughs seventeen times a day. While laughing is quite common, have you ever considered the factors behind laughter? Three theorists– Hobbes, Freud, and Bergson– evaluate the subject of laughter and humor. In the first few paragraphs of Hobbes' passage, he discusses how people degrade those they dislike. He then explains how humans desire to rise above others so they feel superior, making his theory known as the superiority theory. Hobbes believes that by human nature, witty jokes does not always produce laughter; laughter can be evoked by misfortunes or obscenities. The essence of superiority then becomes apparent. Hobbes reveals laughter as hierarchical. Laughter is aroused when others have different intellectual or social statuses. Due to the fact that men yearn to feel higher in their rank, men dislike to be laughed at; Hobbes states, "[it is no wonder therefore that men take heinously to be laughed at or derided, that is, triumphed over]" (66). An example that supports Hobbes' superiority claim is the popular phrase "ain't nobody got time for that." This phrase originated from a video of a woman, Sweet Brown, whose house burned down. This video evokes laughter because the lady comes from a lower class home and is now homeless due to the fire; hence, people feel that she is inferior to them. In addition, Sweet Brown talks in an uneducated way; this leads ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Silliness In Frances Goodrich's Diary Of Anne Frank In the non–fiction drama, Diary of Anne Frank, by playwrights Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, the characters go through many hardships and problems in the year of hiding. Anne Frank, a young girl–who was full of energy–had to live in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam, Holland in the Annex during World War II. At this time, everyone was starving and miserable. The energetic girl lifted the spirits of the others with her humorous skits and actions. During this time of despair and strain, the people found a way to laugh. Silliness is a good medicine when it comes to time of stress. To begin, Peter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, had shown acts of silliness throughout the time in hiding. On page 715, Anne and Peter are jokingly bickering with each other and entertaining the grownups. After Anne goes into Peter's room and comes out with his clothes on, Peter chases her around; he brings up her school nickname, "Mrs. Quack Quack". Anne was called Mrs. Quack Quack because of her chattiness during class; her english teacher started the nickname. Even though Anne was getting annoyed, Peter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anne plays tricks on Peter and fools around like the childish girl she was. The first week in hiding, Anne and Peter playfully argue; "I don't know what you're talking about?" (Goodrich and Hackett 713). She hides Peter's shoes and then goes on to act like Peter by putting his clothes on. The two chase each other around as the adults laugh. A few months later, Anne asks Mrs. Van Daan to try on her coat. After strutting with the coat on, she asks Mrs. Van Daan a foolish question about past boyfriends. The group seems very entertained by Mrs. Van Daan's story. Last but not least, as stated earlier, Anne was relieved and acted amused at the camps because of the ability to go outside; she appreciated the sun on her skin and the breath of fresh air. The theme of silliness has be shown the most in Anne ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a comedy routine by Anjelah Johnson she jokes about an interview where there was a spanish and English one the movie "My family wedding"they said that the Latino cast could do the Spanish interview and the black cast can do the English interview. • 5. Best Memories Research Paper When most people think of a school they think of hard work yelling teens and just absolute chaos, but they also my think back to when they themselves were in school or even their first year there as freshmen and then think of all of the good and funny memories they had there in that year. I happen to be one of them just thinking back to the beginning of the year and all the memories I have had so far. Heck, some of my best memories are in school like when my balloon popped in class, and when me and my friends messed with the plants we were supposed to grow and even when me and my friends played a few games of UNO in the middle of class. First off, one way I had a great time in class is when my balloon popped in the middle of biology. One reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason why this is one of my best memories is that we were super loud. This makes it the best because we were super loud and our substitute teacher didn't even care, other than when he asked us if we were done with are working "Are you guys done with your work over there and if not you'll have to talk to your teacher" but we were already done so we were good. Another reason why this is one of my best memories is none of us were winning. This makes it the best because we are all competitive and none of us were winning, Which is kind of funny because all of us were smack talking each other about who is going to win. Yet I ended up winning and won the next few games of UNO but they were all pretty lengthy and took us most of the hour to play. This makes playing UNO in the middle of class one of the best memories because our teacher didn't even care that much and that none of us were winning even though we were all competitive. Some of my best memories that i have had in my freshman year are when my balloon popped in the middle of class ,and when we messed with my friends plant ,and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of class. These were some of my best memories because when my balloon popped everyone jumped out of their seats and me and my friends couldn't help but laugh, and when we messed with my friends plant and we put a crayon in his plant and waterboarded it, and finally when me and my friends played UNO in the middle of class and our teacher didn't even ... • 11. Informative Essay African Poem Informative Essay "In your ears my song is motor car misfiring stopping with a choking cough" (Okara 19). This quote is from the first line of the poem "You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed" by Gabriel Okara. Gabriel Okara is a famous author who spent the majority of his life in Nigeria. During that time there were many cultural differences between people in Africa versus people in other parts of the world. In the poem, Okara addresses the reader as a selfish person who is unwilling to listen to what he has to say about his African culture. Through contrast, metaphors, and tone Okara expresses the fact that people from other cultures aren't always welcoming towards African culture. The first important literary device that Okara uses to convey the theme of the poem is metaphors. Metaphors play a major role in the development of Okara's message; some people refuse to listen to information about African culture, by making specific comparisons that help the reader better understand the poem. To Okara, the reader seems to listen to him as if he were a "motor car misfiring" (Okara 19). This suggests that the reader doesn't care about what Okara has to say nor does the reader pay much attention to him. The second metaphor that Okara chooses to use is a comparison between the reader's laugh and ice. By comparing the reader's laugh to "ice–block laughter" Okara is making a connection to how harsh their laugh is to the bitterness of the cold (Okara 19). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thank you. "Is this the amount of makeup you'll wear in America?" He admires. "No." I smile. "Not anymore." We stop in silence and I look at him like all the times I did before. I say his name. We talk about how maybe it's for the best we ended things early since we are both leaving anyways. We talk as if it doesn't hurt and it's just a friendly agreement. "I'm glad you came and talked to me." I smile. "You asked to talk. How could I say no to you?" He winks and I laugh. He makes it seem like the whole month of silence was a mistake and all the things I planned on saying are not worth saying. He makes it feel like we were never apart and we will stay this way forever. • 13. Essay On Lady Christie Candice Elaine Godfrey adjusted the sterling silver necklace and positioned the clasp to the back of her neck. She placed her palm over the precious stone that dangled just below her collar bone and gently smiled. She coveted green opals, and she especially desired this one. The matching tear drop earings were just as lovely, too. They were classy, flattering, and mysterious; with how they glittered like a mini universe, and how you were always searching their depths for answers. Very much like she was, in her own right. A mystery. An enigma. A lady who had fashioned her own universe, and had shaped her own destiny. The Madonna of Chicago, some coined her – to those who appreciated her beauty. Boulevard 9 was celebrating its 25th anniversary tonight, and there were streamers, balloons, and tinsel all over the establishment. There were familiar faces, but most were strangers. Everyone was dressed up in a little more glam tonight, whether that entailed nothing more then just extra make–up, an extra effort in casual attire, or extra attention to the little details that attracted greed, lust, and love. It was marvelous to Elaine, and she smiled. There was something different in the air tonight besides extra fluff, Elaine thought, and as she took her usual seat at her usual table, she fixated her heart into discovering what it might be. Elaine had golden, blonde hair that made Hollywood jealous, and expressive blue eyes. It was easy to underestimate her as the cliche, dumb blonde most jokes are made of. Sometimes she let them have their jokes, too, because Duchess Elaine always had the last laugh. • 14. Rear Window, By Alfred Hitchcock And The Last Laugh The films Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and The Last Laugh, directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, both feature protagonists going through change, for better or for worse. Rear Window features L.B. 'Jeff' Jefferies, a professional photographer who is stuck in his wheelchair, in his apartment, because of an accident he had while on the job. The Last Laugh features a hotel doorman that gets demoted to a lesser job, who then undergoes a psychological change. Both films use elements of mise–en–scene to show how the protagonists adapt and change to their confinement and isolation. The use of the set, framing, and motifs of doors and windows in both films emphasizes the idea of the protagonists dealing with change, from freedom to confinement and isolation. In Rear Window, the set is used show the freedom Jeff had before he was confined to his apartment. During the opening scene, the camera pans over and zooms out – through the window – from the other apartment onto Jeff. The opening scene is significant because it demonstrates how Jeff confines himself to his apartment; instead, he could be outside venturing in his wheelchair, despite his disability. Also, the set only consists of the apartment across from Jeff, and his own apartment, while there are several of buildings looming in the background. This segment of the setting, Jeff's apartment and the one across from him, suggests that the set is very enclosed and restricted of freedom; for no other areas of the ... • 16. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca' Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits. Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title. Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by his argument. • 19. How Does Dante's Use Of Violence Humans love violence almost to the point where it is part of our nature. We have tales of people being tortured, suicide, and even senseless beatings and humans enjoy it. The stories that will be discussed use violence in them, but they are not war stories. They are Dante's Inferno, Decameron, and Don Quixote. In Dante's Inferno we have torture being used all throughout hell. We get characters that carry their own heads, Popes who are burned, people eating eachother, and many more grotesque acts of violence. Violence in this piece of literature is used as a scare tactic. Dante wants us to be afraid of sinning so he shows us this terrible images. He does make the punishment fit the crime though. In most of these punishments it is almost poetic for how much they punishments play off of. We get people who are caught up in lust be forever. • 20. Poetic Techniques of Wilfred Owen Essay Wilfred Owen can be considered as one of the finest war poets of all times. His war poems, a collection of works composed between January 1917, when he was first sent to the Western Front, and November 1918, when he was killed in action, use a variety of poetic techniques to allow the reader to empathise with his world, situation, emotions and thoughts. The sonnet form, para– rhymes, ironic titles, voice, and various imagery used by Owen grasp the prominent central idea of the complete futility of war as well as explore underlying themes such as the massive waste of young lives, the horrors of war, the hopelessness of war and the loss of religion. These can be seen in the three poems, 'Anthem for Doomed Youth', 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Para–rhymes, in Owen's poetry, generate a sense of incompleteness while creating a pessimistic, gloomy effect to give an impression of sombreness. Strong rhyming schemes are often interrupted unexpectedly with a para–rhyme to incorporate doubt to every aspect of this Great War. Who are the real villains and why are hundreds of thousands of lives being wasted in a war with no meaning? In 'Anthem for Doomed Youth', the consistent sonnet rhyming scheme is disturbed by a half rhyme, "guns ... orisons", to show how the soldiers all died alone with only the weapons that killed them by their side, and a visual rhyme, "all ... pall" to indicate that the reality of war is entirely the opposite to what it seems – no glory, no joy and no heroism, but only death and destruction. Owen occasionally works with this technique in a reverse approach to create similar thought. For instance, the assonance, consonance and half rhyme based poem, 'The Last Laugh', contains an unforeseen full rhyme, "moaned ... groaned", to emphasise that nothing is ever fixed in war except the ghastly fact that the weapons are the true winners. Different forms of Para rhymes often work together with common schemes to ably bring out the main ideas of Owen's poetry. The purpose of war is again in question through the ironic titles evidenced in most of Owen's poems. In 'Dulce Et Decorum Est', the sweet and fitting death is contrasted against the bitter and ... • 21. Summary Of Murnau's The Last Laugh Friedrich Willhelm (F.W.) Murnau's The Last Laugh (1924) holds a special place within silent film (Bordwell 2016). It is the film that made Murnau popular with American audiences, and in turn, its success lead him to move to Hollywood and eventually make masterpieces (not to say that The Last Laugh itself isn't a masterpiece), such as Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927). Both films evoke the surreality of life, but unlike the celebratory Sunrise¸ The Last Laugh laments life's predestined nature. Murnau dramatizes this lamentation through the contrast of the real with the fanciful and through his use of doors. From the first shot, The Last Laugh manages to be both hyper–realistic and utterly whimsical. We are whisked down the elevator and out the constantly revolving door into a city, that while appearing to be real at first, is just a painted backdrop. But Murnau spares no expense to fool the audience; he even has figures moving inside the painted towers, which to the untrained eye cause the towers to seem real. Alas, the towers are fake, but these moving figures serve a larger purpose than just to be a tool to suspend the audience's belief. They add to the busy aesthetic of the The Last Laugh. The world Murnau has created is a hectic one where "One day you are preeminent, respected by all," as the opening title announces, and the next you are a nobody, and before you know it, life has passed you by. This is the case for our unnamed protagonist (Emil Jannings) who is now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I wasn't scared of a lot of things, but one fear I have is the fear of big bugs. I was always scared of big bugs. Last year, I went to a cabin with my family and friends during Labor Day. When we got there we started unpacking and I went to the sink to wash my hands. When I was about to turn on the faucet, I saw a big centipede and I shrieked. I ran to my parents and told them, but when they came to the sink it was gone. That whole time when I was in the cabin I was terrified and I always looked out for centipedes. I know that it is possible to overcome my fear of big bugs but I am not ready now. Although, one day I am going to overcome that fear. Fear can only stop people from excelling in life. Don't let one fear stop you from achieving something great. Sometimes people are scared because they're different. These days, many people don't realize how much magic there is when being themself. In my book, 101 Ways To Bug Your Teacher, by Lee Wardlaw, the author uses various elements of humor, such as dialect, plot twist, and Irony in my book to make the reader laugh. The end result of my book is hilarious because of how well the author incorporates these elements of humor. First, the author uses dialect, or a certain way someone or a group of people talk to make the audience laugh. In my book, the author designs the character's personalities to be unique and have some of the character's have a certain dialect. One example, "But hic!hic! You cannot hic!hic! Go!" A second example, "Your Mom is pregnant!" (P.122) This plot twist is also humorous because the way Sneeze reacted which was really funny, and how he stood up in the middle of class and yelled "WHAT!" was also funny because of the horrible timing, and how the class reacted. The audience didn't expect that Sneezes mom was pregnant. For the last example, "It's Fierce Hayley, FIERCE." (P.156) This plot twist is also funny because the way Sneeze was so shocked to know, and how he tried to act during dinner because he tried his best to look good so he would get a good grade in her class. The audience would have never known that the mean teacher is Hayley's dad's girlfriend. Finally, the author uses irony to make the reader laugh. An example of irony, "...Looked at the screen with adoration and joy." (P.215) This is funny because of Hiccup's excited reaction, and he didn't know Sneezes mom was pregnant, and was funny and unexpected because Hiccup lost his long case of hiccups when he found out. Lives come And go, people making memories that will follow them to the ends of their lives for the good or bad, and at times things just don't make sense at all or even you just don't know how to feel about it. That very factor is the reason why Charles Swindall once said: "Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you react to it". One person has that power to change their course of history, but you need to know the past to complete the future, after just 17 years of my life I've learned life is funny like that. The show's co–writer, Neal Brennan told TIME that Chappelle's "indecisiveness" and his growing hesitation around racial sketches was "confusing" and "contradictory," while Comedy Central president Doug Herzog told TIME he "didn't know what the guy's thinking." But Chappelle was onto something, and his concern was not paranoia. Whether or not his sketches were problematic as he feared, his large, growing, diverse audience made it possible––– and perhaps guaranteed––– that the reception of his show by some would be problematic. Chappelle had no fears of unfavorable reception–––that is, an episode that made nobody laugh; again, it was a laugh that set him off! And he certainly wasn't afraid of controversy––– that is, pushing boundaries for the greater good and angering television and comedy purists along the way. In the series premiere, Chappelle introduced the sketch "Frontline: Clayton Bigsby" by saying, "I still haven't been cancelled yet, but I'm working on it. And I think this next piece might do ... That may offend people because she was making fun of their race. But the way she said it was not that offensive because she had said it in a funny way. • 34. Life Poem Analysis The author Paul Laurence Dunbar wants the readers to acknowledge how he uses concrete and abstract in his poem called "Life". Throughout his poem he uses concrete to make us feel how sadness takes over happiness most of the time, another strategy the author uses is abstract he uses it in a deep matter, he makes you think something that isn't normal that you can't visualize, he uses it a lot but also combines it with concrete as well. As a matter a fact this connects with something about my personal point of view so far because I also feel that I can't enjoy life as much as I would want but there's always another bad side and it's the problems that make you fall in depression and other stuff that has to do with sadness. However in the poem "Life" the writer expresses his poem by using concrete and abstract images, he tells us how life is too ironic to fully understand how you truly feel, but in his perspective sadness lasts more than being happy as well. In other words the author uses concrete to express how in the poem "Life" you can feel sadness and can imagine it, during the poem he mentioned " with a smile to warm and the tears to refresh us " this was an example of concrete when the author said " a smile to warm " you can actually feel a smile you can actually feel when you're warm, it also goes with the same thing when it says "and the tears to refresh us " you can feel when you cry also feel the tears like it's refreshing your face as saying happiness gets erased by the tears when you're getting refreshed. Another well done example the author used is when he said in his poem " A pint of joy to a peck of trouble " the author basically just mentioned how a pint of joy goes by so fast and when trouble comes, it comes in a matter of seconds and sometimes it can happen keep happening instantly, therefore it's concrete because you can feel the pint of joy where you actually feel the happiness but then he said "peck" means your conflicts start showing up rapidly. Additionally, he used the same strategy when author said "And never a laugh, but the moans come double;" this one is pretty straightforward when he said "And never a laugh" you know when you laugh you feel the happiness. However, if you laugh it's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Volpone – Disturbing or Funny? Essay 'It invites us to laugh at things which with only a slight shift of perspective are troubling and disturbing rather than funny' The backbone of ' Volpone' is a tale of a dark and absurd world where twisted, greedy characters deceive and attempt to deceive each other. Despite this bleak situation it is a very funny play, the humor increases as the characters sink to new levels. This interplay of disturbing human fault with witty humor does indeed allow us to laugh at situations that are at a second glance horrific and distressful. This tactic is Johnson's tool for the juvenalian satire of the play's over plot, we are not independent of Volpone's world as he warns in the prologue:– 'Only a little salt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here is a man literally worshipping Gold:– ' Open the shrine that I may see my saint' His language is that of religion and worship, Gold is his 'god', it is 'blessed', 'sacred' he treats it with love and 'adoration'. This is heresy, a mockery of religion and very distorted and wrong to us, we are appalled as we laugh. However, the darker side still to Volpone's opening speech is that Volpone is not alone in his warped worship:– 'Hail the world's soul and mine!' Here Johnson makes a serious satirical point, Volpone, as much as we like to laugh and scorn him, is not alone. Infact, he embodies the greed and money obsession that is the very 'soul' of our world. This is an example of where the laughter stops and something truly troubling is revealed among the humour that often reflects on us, here it is the world's unhealthily fixation with money and it's bottomless greed. This greed comes in many shapes and sizes throughout 'Volpone' one of the most surprising is Corbaccio, the old man. Corbaccio's first scene is very funny, the old raven comes to feed on Volpone when infact Volpone and Mosca are robbing him dry. We laugh as the supposedly dying Volpone makes witty and disparaging remarks and Mosca's exploitation of Corbaccio's deafness is also fiendishly comical:– ' Mosca [aside]. • 37. Personal Narrative: Jemima My best friend is Jemima. She has many siblings and lives in Fort Worth, Texas. I have known Jemima since 5th grade and we have been best friends ever since. I am grateful for how natural our friendship is. She always listens to my boring stories and does not judge me when I tell her something that I wouldn't tell most people. She has the ability to put a smile on my face on the worst of days. I think the quality that I value the most about our friendship is that we share the same humor. There is not a day that I go talking to her where I don't laugh. We share so many inside jokes, it's crazy. There will be times in class where we just look at each other and suddenly we get the joke. although nothing has been said. Every year since 5th grade, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Plato's Allegory Of The Cave Knowledge is the perception by sentient beings of an upper world filled with ideas and pure forms of objects instead of the material, real–world forms that these sentient beings sense. Plato, in his Allegory of the Cave, uses an analogy between prisoners chained in a cave who can only see reality as shadows on the wall. In his story, one escapes, and discovers the "true" world of reality above, but when he returns, none of his friends believe him and they say that one would be a fool for going to the true world of perception. Plato claims through Socrates, "The world of our sight is like the habitation in prison, the fire–light there to the sunlight here, the ascent and the view of the upper world is the rising of the soul into the world of ... And seen, this must be inferred to be the cause of all right and beautiful things for all, which gives birth to light and the king of light in the world of sight, and, in the world of mind, herself the queen produces truth and reason; and she must be seen by one who is to act with reason publicly or privately." In this quotation, Plato is advancing his analogy by saying that the firelight, casting the shadows in this allegorical cave, is comparable to the sun in our world, casting the perceivable shadows from the higher, pure manifestations of the "true" forms of objects. According to Plato, people's souls can ascend or descend among this hierarchy of perception, stretching from the world of pure essence to the darkest, most distorted form of reality, causing some people who have just changed states to be "dazzled:" "[W]henever [one] sees a soul confused and unable to discern anything he would not just laugh carelessly; he would examine whether it had come out of a more brilliant life, and if it were darkened by the strangeness; or whether it had come out of greater ignorance into a more brilliant light, and if it were dazzled with the brighter ... The Importance Of Being Earnest Satire Essay DocViewer Page of 2 Zoom Pages Gerzog 1 Jeffrey Gerzog Ms. Shaw AP Literature January 20, 2018 Thoughtful Laughter in "The Importance of Being Ernest" The story "The Importance of Being Ernest," by Oscar Wilde is a story built on the underlying comedy only the careful reader will laugh at. There are many times throughout the story where there is a hidden joke or message that many will just read over if they don't pay close attention. The three main instances of this are Wilde's use of satire, the puns that are often used, and the amount of hypocrisy from the two main characters. In the story, Wilde often shines the light on the modern fact that people take themselves too seriously. The characters Jack and Algernon show this modern issue at its fullest. They both ... In all reality they could do all of these things and just be themselves, but they take themselves too seriously. Puns are often used in the story to get a small giggle out of the reader. An example of this is "It is very vulgar to talk like a dentist when one isn't a dentist. It gives a false impression." Many times if you are not carefully reading, you will most likely pass over these simple puns. But for those that take their time when reading there are many puns throughout the story sure to give you a laugh. The last example of "thoughtful laughter" is the hypocrisy of the two main characters Jack and Algernon and their alter ego, "Ernest," who is not at all earnest. This comes to be true Gerzog 2 the most however when the two main females in the story, Gwendolen and Cecily, fall in love with a man named Ernest who is not at all what his name would have you believe. • 40. My Social Norm For my Social Norm Project I decided to go to a scary movie at AMC. My friend and I went to the scary movie called Crimson Peak when the movie theater was busy. The reason I decided to go when it was busy and picked a scary movie is because I wanted to laugh instead of scream at the scary parts to see what people would do. It is socially normal to scream when you are afraid, but laughing is normally not a reaction someone would expect. To do the experiment we sat in the middle of the theater so we would be close enough to the people in the theater and every time a scary part would come up I would start laughing hysterically. At first it was difficult to follow through with the experiment because it was a really scary movie and I had to make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
