Born in Northumberland in 1828
From a privileged and wealthy family
Ther father (an antislavery supporter) taught her to
fight against injustice.
Excellent education (not usual for a woman
at that time)
In 1852, she married George Butler
(a tutor at Durhan University)
George shared her concern about helping others.

Unlike other wealthy women, she listened to
these women´s stories and realized they were
victims, not sinners.
They had 4 children.
Eva, their youngest,died in 1864
Most of the women in these places
were prostitutes.
Her tragedy moved her to visiting
workhouses and prisons.
