Untimely death of
John K. Borchard
We recently learned of the death of
John K. Borchard at the ACS Lead-
ership Conference in Fort Worth,
Texas, in January. John was a
friend to many members of SCHB.
He had written an article for this
issue of Small Chem Biz: “The
ACS Committee on Patents
and Related Matters” (See page
4)
John Borchardt operated his own
consulting/technical writing
firm, Southhaven Communica-
tions, since 2004. He was an
ACS career consultant for 15
years. He was the author of the
ACS/Oxford University Press
Book “Career Management for
Scientists and Engineers.” He
had more than 1500 articles
published in a variety of maga-
zines,
newspapers and encyclopedias. As
an industrial chemist, he held 30
U.S. and more than 125 interna-
tional patents and was the author
of more than 130 peer-reviewed
papers. He served on the ACS Joint
Board – Council Committee Patents
and Related Matters.

The ACS Committee on
Patents and Related
Matters
by
John K. Borchardt
No matter what the size of your
organization, patents can be major
importance to its financial success.
Once the almost exclusive domain
of companies, universities and units
of the federal government like the
national laboratories have become
quite active in obtaining patents and
licensing them. Therefore, patent-
related matters are important to
most ACS members including many
members of the Division of Small
Chemical Businesses.
The ACS Committee on Patents
and Related Matters (CPRM) is a
joint committee of the ACS Council
and the ACS Board of Directors. It
meets at each ACS National Meet-
ing, usually on Saturday. Much of its
work is carried out by its four
subcommittees.
The Legislation and Regulation
Subcommittee monitor intellec-
tual property issues of importance
to ACS members and chemists in
general. It works to insure that ACS
members’ interests are included in
debate and discussion about legisla-
tion and regulations affecting intel-
lectual property. When appropriate,
it visits policy makers and explores
collaborations with other intellectual
property organizations outside the
ACS. It maintains a liaison to the
copyright subcommittee of the ACS
Joint Board – Council Committee on
Publications.
The Education Subcommittee
provides information on intellectual
property issues that is useful and
needed to the general ACS member.
This includes a patent primer for
chemists.

The Awards Subcommittee seeks
to highlight and acknowledge the
intellectual property contributions of
chemists. One way it does this is to
solicit nominations for the National
Inventor’s Hall of Fame and the
National Medal of Technology and
other appropriate awards. This sub-
committee guides the nominations
through the appropriate ACS
approval process to gain official
ACS endorsement. It also consid-
ers new awards for innovation.

Hi everyone,
Welcome to New Orleans!
Things are moving ahead with the
ACS Division of Small Chemical
Businesses. We will have a strong
presence at the ACS National Meet-
ings in New Orleans, LA (April
7-11, 2013) as well as in Indianapo-
lis, IN (Sept 8-12, 2013). We have
also been establishing a presence at
the ACS Regional Meetings. Cur-
rently these include the following.
•Central Regional Meeting
(CERM), Mt. Pleasant MI, May 15-
18, 2013
•Great Lakes Regional Meeting
(GLRM), La Crosse, WI, June 5-8,
2013
•Western Regional Meeting
(WRM), Santa Clara, CA
•Northeast Regional Meeting
(NERM), New Haven, CT, Oct 23-
26, 2013
•Southeastern Regional Meeting
(SERMACS), Atlanta, GA, Nov 13-
16, 2013
All these meetings will need vol-
unteers, speakers and organizers so
please step up for the SCHB.
To even further the SCHB Division,
we are extending our outreach pro-
gram to include other Professional
meetings in 2013. These include the
Advancement of Science (AAAS),
Feb 14-18, 2013 in Boston, MA;
American Physical Society (APS),
Mar 18-22, 2013 in Baltimore,
MD; and Conference on Lasers and
Electro-Optics (CLEO) June 9-14,
2013 in San Jose, CA. This is all
thanks to a grant from ACS.
As you can see elsewhere in the
newsletter, Joe Sabol, Program
Chair, has established a wonderful
Spring Program in New Orleans,
LA. As before, we will have a booth
at ACS Expo along with booths for
new chemical businesses. Further-
more, we have a great reception
planned at the Crescent City in New
Orleans on April 8th
. Please feel free
to visit us at the reception, at the
Expo, in New Orleans or through
our social media platforms on Linke-
dIn, ACS Network, Twitter, and/or
Facebook.
As our programs grows, our call
for volunteers continues to grow.
This could be at any of our national
meetings or even on our monthly
Executive Committee meetings. We
need your help in all areas includ-
ing organizing and speaking at our
meetings. Please contact me if you
need additional information or have
any further questions. I can always
be reached at chair@acs-schb.org.
Thank you!

Regional Meeting Report
By Joe Sabol
Program Chair
ACS regional meetings provide an
alternative to the large semi-annual
national meetings. SCHB plans
programming at four ACS regional
meetings in 2013 and we hope that
you can attend one or more. SCHB
has two models for regional meet-
ings: 1) two half-day sessions on
“resources” and “true stories” and
sponsorship of a coffee break, and 2)
sending a SCHB representative, with
poster and other materials, to so-
licit ideas and members. However,
SCHB can sponsor other sessions if
a member proposes and is willing to
organize.
In addition, ACS offers leader-
ship courses at regional meetings
and SCHB will sponsor the tuition
(a member benefit) for a member
who is interested in becoming more
involved in the division. If you are
aware of a 2013 regional meeting
close to your location and you would
like to participate, please contact
Program Chair Joe Sabol program@
acs-schb.org with your ideas.
Central Regional Meeting CERM,
Mt. Pleasant MI, May 15-18, 2013
SCHB is organizing “True Stories
of Success from Chemical En-
trepreneurs” and “Resources for
Startup and Growing Small Busi-
nesses” and a poster session. See:
http://2013cerm.sites.acs.org/. If
you would like to participate, submit
an abstract, or assist, please contact
Joe Sabol program@acs-schb.org or
Jennifer Maclachlan pr@acs-schb.
org.
Great Lakes Regional Meeting
GLRM, La Crosse WI, June 5-8,
2013
SCHB is organizing “True Stories
of Success from Chemical Entrepre-
neurs” and “Resources for Startup
and Growing Small Businesses”
and a poster session. See: http://
www.uwlax.edu/glrm2013/. If you
would like to participate, submit an
abstract, or assist, please contact
Joe Sabol program@acs-schb.org
or Michael Haukaas membership@
acs-schb.org.
Western Regional Meeting WRM,
Santa Clara CA, October 2-5, 2013.
The WRM website was not up and
SCHB’s program was not final at
press time, but new ideas can still be
added. If you are interested in help-
ing, please contact Sandra Thomp-
son sthompson@buchalter.com or
Joe Sabol.
Northeast Regional Meeting NERM,
New Haven CT, October 23-26,
2013.
SCHB plans “True Stories of Suc-
cess from Chemical Entrepreneurs”
and “Resources for Startup and
Growing Small Businesses” and a
poster session, but details were not
available at press time. If you would
like to participate, please contact
Jennifer Maclachlan.
Looking forward, if you are aware
of a regional meeting in 2014 and
would like to organize a session,
please contact SCHB Program Chair
Joe Sabol.
