2. “THE EBOLA OUTBREAK”
The video “The Ebola outbreak” made by BBC 6 Minute English, in August 28th,
2014 from “LinkEngPark” states that Ebola virus, discovered in 1976, do not have any cure
yet and it is responsible for the high increment of mortality in Africa, mainly on the West
side. Thus, WHO (World Health Organisation) and the uses of experimental drugs have
introduced a dilemma of big proportions to the humanity: Is it better to apply the
medications to the sickest people with death risk or to those who are not so sick to die?
When considering this dilemma it is important to have in mind that these drugs have not
been approved, and their side effects are unknown.
In my opinion, Ebola virus has not been treated with the relevance that it demands
by the science. Because even when currently technology allows experts to develop
medicine and health by leaps and bounds, scientists are not able to prevent this mortal
virus. In fact, Ebola’s origin and causes have not been found yet; although specialists
postulate that it is caused by some type of bats from Republic of Congo. But does Ebola
virus win the fight against modern science? I really do not think so.
Furthermore, I felt intrigued by the event that people are dying in places that are
widely known because of their overpopulation and poorness (among others negative
factors). This idea made me think about governments, society and racism due to the fact
that Ebola virus has killed black people only. Being that, a little quantity of white people
has been infected they are always cured, as some popular cases that happened in USA and
Spain; while, on West Africa (Guinea, Liberia ad Sierra Leone) a half of the population has
been infected with death results.
It is important to take in account that the use of non-approved drugs to cure this
class of diseases is applied under certain conditions only. On the one hand, it is necessary to
sign a waiver which states that governments and doctors are not considered liable for
unexpected consequences. Does it mean that responsibility is just charged to sick people?
And, what happen if those people are too sick to sign the permission? They are doomed to
die sadly abandoned by everyone. On the other hand, it is essential to decide if it is better to

3. apply medications to the sickest with death risk or to who are not so sick to die, which
affirms an ethic-social trouble difficult to solve.
