Modal Verbs
2. Definitions
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that can
not function as a main verb, unlike the
auxiliary verbs "be", "do" and "have" that
can function as a main verb.
Modal verbs express modality. They can express ability,
possibility, need or other condition. They are auxiliary
verbs of the future and the conditional. English verb
tenses are not enough to express ideas of possibility or
uncertainty. There is no verbal tense of the conditional
in English. At the same time, auxiliary verbs are used
for the conditional. Nor is there a verb tense like the
subjunctive in Spanish. Therefore, it is very important to
understand the uses of modal verbs.
As complementary verbs that are,
modal verbs do not work without
another verb. This other verb always
goes after the modal verb and is in the
base form (the infinitive without "to").
Modal verbs are not conjugated and do
not have time.
3. CAN
Express possibility or the fact of
knowing how to do something:
I can speak Russian.
COULD
It's CAN's past. And it is also used as a
conditional of this same verb. It should be said
that it also has a use to express a question
more politely: a use that is in fact parallel to the
one we have in Spanish with the conditional.
Danny could dance for hours when he was a
teenager
SHOULD
Express a recommendation A tip, an opinion.
You should go to the party.
WOULD
It is the verb that helps to form the
conditional in English
I would like to take a bath.
May
Express possibility or probability. It is also
used for courtesy questions.
I may stay in Barcelona this summer.
Might
Expresses a probability but with
weakness, that is, it is an unlikely
event. It also has a courtesy use.
You might be wrong.
Shall
It is a very formal and almost
archaic form. It is a particle of
the future.
You shall not pass.
Will
Auxiliary of the future. A future that
will happen with security.
I will go with you to the doctor.
