How Did George Eastman Impacted Society
All of these men were Captains of Industry. Though these men did not treat everyone with respect,
they were all philanthropists. They each donated a generous amount of money to schools and
organizations that could use the money to help change society. George Eastman donated money to
dental clinics for children that could not afford treatment (reading). This impacted our society
because people that needed dental work done could have it. Families that don't have a lot of money
do not have to worry anymore about not being able to afford it. Eastman also gave scholarships and

Kodak is making history. In 2010, we made real progress toward becoming a profitable, sustainable
digital company. We enjoyed a record level of digital earnings from operations and produced
promising results from the four engines of our digital growth strategy – Consumer Inkjet,
Commercial Inkjet, Packaging, and Workflow Software & Services. As a group, revenue from these
product lines increased 18% last year. Our strategy is working. We are using our competitive
advantage at the intersection of digital imaging and materials science to pursue large markets in
need of transformation, such as commercial printing. We are gaining market share and building
growth businesses with exciting potential. During 2010, we achieved a number of milestones: Sales

On November the 4th of this year, after approximately three years under a Chapter 11 bankruptcy
decree; Kodak finally was able to post a profit on their earning, and the company expects to fetch a
year ending revenue of $2.1 – $2.3 billion dollars (Armental). After many missed opportunities that
occurred under a myopic bureaucratic leadership; the Eastman Kodak Company filed for protections
from their credits, and began what will be a slow journey back to financial health. But, the decent
into this failure started more than thirty–five years ago, when the company failed to develop the
technology that Kodak 's Research and Development had invented. In the year 1901, the Eastman
Kodak Company was incorporated; the company mass–produced dry photographic plates. This new
for–the–time technology would become the catalyst to a revolution in photographic technology, and
for many years the company surged ahead of its rivals and commanded 80% of the photographic
imaging market (Jones). But the decision makers failed to realize that digital was a disruptive
technology, and this allowed more agile competitors the chance to devour Kodak 's market share.
This sort of technological paradigm shift has caught many companies by surprise by "dramatically
altering the very nature of competition"; and requires the company to adjust their strategy to meet

This attention to detail and ability to out pace Kodak technology had endeared Fuji to its
professional market, and serve as a bridge to build credibility on all of Kodak's markets. It had taken
its market share now, and was edging out Kodak on lower price and even lowers profits just to get
ahead. Fuji's most advertised success in Kodak's market happened in the 1984 Olympics in Los

fully realized that the changing and emerging markets were in taking advantage of that face and his

industry, someone who sets asides difficulties in their lives to achieve absolute excellence in their

In 1880, George Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. By 1888,
the company developed its first snapshot camera and became an American household name. Over
time, Kodak believed that most of their money came from film, which caused the company to lose
focus on their equipment. However, by the 1960s, Kodak started to introduce new products that

In 1998, Kodak lost market share when Fuji cut their prices. "As a result of this price war, by the
end of 1999 the company has to cut $1.2 billion in costs and 19,900 jobs, or about one–fifth of its
payroll, the most severe cutback ever at Kodak" (Gavetti, Henderson and Giorgi 10). By 2001,
Kodak was losing $60 on every digital camera it sold (Gavetti, Henderson and Giorgi 10). During its
time, Kodak has faced multiple legal issues. One issue they faced was an antitrust suit with
independent service organizations. Kodak controls most of the service market and the market for its
replacement parts. The independent service organizations argued "that Kodak was trying to force
them out of business by restricting their access to replacement parts and by trying to insure that
customers for its business machines either service the machines themselves or buy service directly
from Kodak" (Greenhouse). Kodak was being accused of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. The
service companies believed that Kodak was "unlawfully tying the sale of service for Kodak
machines to the sale of parts, and unlawfully trying to monopolize the market for service"
(Greenhouse). According to the textbook, Section 1 of the Sherman Act states that it is illegal to
restraint trade in contract, trust or conspiracy and Section 2 condemns any person who monopolizes

My name is George Eastman, I was born on July 12, 1854 in Waterville New York. I was named
after my father George Washington Eastman. My mother's name was Maria Eastman. I also have
two older sisters Katie and Ellen Maria Eastman. My sister Katie passed away from polio at a young
age. My father ran a business college in Rochester New York. But my father died when I was seven
from a heart disorder. To help my mother I dropped out of high school at the age of 14 to start
working, another way I supported my mother and sister is, I would rent rooms out from my home.
My first job was a messenger boy for an insurance company. I was getting paid three dollars a week.
I then became an office boy for another company and was getting paid five dollars a week. I wanted
a higher paying job so I studied accounting from home. I then moved up as the bookkeeper at the
Rochester savings bank and was making fifteen dollars an hour.
When I was 24 I planned a trip to visit Santo Domingo. My friend suggested I document the trip. So
I bought photography equipment but it was big and heavy. The camera was the size of a microwave.

difficult because it needed essential pieces of equipment in order to even come out with a decent

to patenting his film in 1884, and then in 1889 he patented a roll film. He introduced his first
camera, the Kodak camera (shown in picture two) in 1888 (Carlisle 247.) This is when the magic

was not only one person's job to develop and take the photo. The photographer could send their
camera in, and the Eastman Kodak Company would develop the pictures for them. "In the first year,
13,000 people paid $25 for a Kodak; they each took 100 pictures, returned the camera and within

Kodak's Gold Plus brand was the standard of the industry. Exhibit 1 shows the average retail prices
for a single 24–exposure roll of ISO 100 film. (ISO refers to the "speed" or light sensitivity of the
film. Amateurs typically use 100, 200, or 400, with 100 being the most popular. Higher–ISO films
performed in lower light conditions, but were more expensive.)
As shown in Exhibit 1, there were four price tiers in the market. Kodak Gold Plus, the largest–
selling brand by far, set the Premium Brand price at $3.49. Kodak's gross margins were believed to
be about 70%. Both Kodak and Fuji offered superpremium brands targeted very narrowly at

Kodak in that sense lost a bit of advantage and did not change quick enough to keep their
profitability up and made poor strategic decisions on how to deal with all the changes in technology
that made their traditional model of making most of their money on film and other accessories
outdated. One of the main problems that Kodak was that they had been in the top position for so
long and they failed to expect that any decisions that they made would be correct one and would be
supported by their loyal consumer base, but they did not move quickly enough with technology to

When he created his dry–plate coating machine, Eastman knew he had something. His invention, the
first of its kind was unique in many ways. In 1888 the original Kodak sold for $25 loaded with a roll
of film and included a leather carrying case. "Unlike earlier cameras that used a glass–plate negative
for each exposure, the Kodak came preloaded with a 100–exposure roll of flexible film" (Original
Kodak Camera). When the consumer was finished with their roll of film, they mailed the whole
camera back to the factory to have the film developed and printed at a cost of $10. The camera was
returned with negatives and mounted prints along with a new roll of film. Kodak advertisements
from 1888 stated that any amateur could "finish his own pictures" and spare film rolls were sold for
$2. According to the National Museum of American History, Eastman's first camera, The Kodak,
created pictures that were distinctly unique with the recognizable circular snapshots that defined a
new style of photography that was informal, fun, and personal (Original Kodak Camera). The design
of the original Kodak had a special barrel shutter that was set by pulling up a string on top of the

George Eastman was born on July 12, 1854 and began exploring his photographic interests in 1874
after buying an "outfit". He was a high school dropout at the age 14 with small beginnings till he
was hired at a bank, which allowed him to earn enough for photographic equipment. I chose George
Eastman due to his personal history, he started off very poor but ends up being one of the richest
photographers. Contributions he made to photography were the creation of a dry plate formula and a
