About FAAVM
The FAAVM is a non-profit organization, whereas our major focus involves using various
multifunctional civil rights programmes to help our mostly disadvantaged, underprivileged minorities
as men, women and children. Via the FAAVM multilateral humanitarian systems, and activities, we're
able to reach out to these people who are very difficult to reach via more traditional-type
programmes. We then use these activities to help improve the quality of life of these disadvantaged
communities nationwide and worldwide.
Our all-volunteer network nationwide program is comprised of several components, all having to do
with providing meaningful and positive educational, socio-cultural, spiritual, economic, political and
overall human development activities for our mostly economically disadvantaged nationwide and
worldwide.
A major objective is our use of national and international legally binding humanitarian instruments,
norms, precepts and principles in order to intervene to outreach communities that are often very
difficult to otherwise reach. We are then able to impact these communities in many positive ways. We
promote early education, child welfare, gender equity, social justice, global peace and socio economic
development, youth empowerment and the overall growth and advancement process. We emphasize
on maximizing positive human potential, drug education/prevention, healthy living, decreased street
violence, improved reading and writing skills, and learning to respect others from diverse
backgrounds.
Our Mission
Our Mission is help to reduce poverty and encourage economic growth. The debate on globalization
and the fights against discrimination only serve to increase awareness about how much is at stake in
social development. Our goals are ambitious: to improve the quality of life and extend socioeconomic
benefits and empowerment broadly throughout civil societies, governments and minority communities.
Now we are seeking a growing consensus from both governments and wealthier communities around
the world and a renewed commitment on the part of national and international civil communities and
governments to collaborate and harmonize the many efforts under way.
FAAVM organization is involved in nearly every aspect of human rights, civil rights and human
development, with activities ranging from economic development and advancement, legislative
research projects, global partnership and trade, to financial and technical assistance from
governments and private enterprises. The FAAVM plays an important supporting role as developing
communities to shape, and implement their strategies to reduce poverty and stimulate human growth.
We also place a high priority on communicating knowledge about development.
5
Project Overview
The Global Socio Economic Development Group (GSEDG), thereby established under Andrew Williams
Jr. Team PAR 12 – FAAVM, is an international group of achieved experts throughout a wide range of
socio-economic, cultural, political and environmental fields, working together to deliver a $100 million
sustainable socio-economic and humanitarian project to the Government of Bermuda. The aim is to
reduce poverty while improving health, education, and the environment, by advancing local and
international trade, youth entrepreneurship, minority businesses, gender equity, and multinational
partnership alliances and coalition building. These goals provide a focus for the efforts of FAAVM
through other multilateral and multinational organizations, governments, and other partners in the
development community on significant and measurable long term improvements.
The GSEDG goals also establish yardsticks for measuring paramount and blueprint results, not just for
underprivileged communities but also for the richer and wealthier communities and government
institutions that help fund development programs and for the multilateral institutions that work to
implement these goals.
The GSEDG goals for Bermuda are as to:
1. Reduce poverty within disadvantaged and underprivileged communities across Bermuda.
2. Achieve national primary and basic educations by ensuring that boys and girls successfully
complete primary and basic academic schooling.
3. Promote gender equity and empower women to eliminate gender disparities and inequities at
all levels of education, civil societies, corporate sectors and governments.
4. Combat HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, street violence, youth delinquency societal challenges.
5. Develop a global partnership for development to expand local and national businesses and
international trade market accessibilities.
6. Develop local, national and international corporate mechanisms and corporate industries.
7. Launching prospective research studies, exploring what form of education, science, cultural
and communication will be needed in shaping Bermudan present and future generations.
8. Advancing the transfer and sharing of knowledge, which relies primarily on research, training
and scientific teaching activities.
9. Setting national standards by preparing and adopting national and international human rights,
corporate, organizational instruments and statutory recommendations in the fields of
education, science, culture, and human rights.
10. Sharing and exchanging specialized information.
11. Promoting human rights and peace.
12. To reduce civil and human rights violations within and amongst communities by enforcing
national judicial principles and mechanisms through specific legislations.
13. Initiating and launching specific research studies in the fields of international justice.
14. Advancing and implementing civil and legal competence.
15. Maintaining and promoting a Bermuda that is fair and just for every citizen.
16. Monitoring the national and international justice systems and securing the rule of law.
6
17. Combating and eliminating inequities among disadvantaged communities.
18. Protect human rights, pluralist democracy, and the rule of law.
19. Promote civil rights awareness and encourage the development and protection of Bermuda's
multicultural identity and societal diversity.
20. Seek legal solutions to problems facing Bermudan societies, including discrimination against
minorities, xenophobia, intolerance, and environmental protection.
21. Help consolidate and strengthen democratic stability in Bermuda by backing political,
legislative, and constitutional reform.
Background information
Socio-economic, political, environmental and humanitarian issues and challenges facing
communities worldwide, with few exceptions, are well known through numerous expert studies
done over recent decades. Actions on recommendations, however, have not been forthcoming.
FAAVM Practical solutions shall:
a. Avoid the mistakes that have been previously made, and apply lessons learned.
b. Serve to develop stronger collaboration and establish sustainable mechanisms.
c. Address minority socio-economic issues with practical proven solutions.
Why the time is NOW?
The pressing societal challenges of Bermudans are significantly critical, and in order to
safeguard human rights, justice and the rule of law, and socio economic and political order,
Andrew Williams Jr. Team PAR 12 – FAAVM have established the Global Socio Economic
Development Group (GSEDG), whereas a group of accomplished and achieved international
experts originating from all parts of the world; to deliver long term sustainable solutions to the
Government of Bermuda and Bermudan citizens.
Why GSEDG?
The GSEDG has been established as a Global Group of Experts (GGE) specifically addressing
and establishing sustainable structures and mechanism to offer long term solutions, with the
proven expertise to deliver direct-action socio-economic, political, cultural, humanitarian and
environmental programs to assist in implementing the United Nations Millennium Development
Goals –UNMDG 2015.
GSEDG Methods
The socio-economic challenges of Bermudans have been identified by on-going reports and
studies, consultation with individuals, government entities and other national and international
related institutions specializing in socio-cultural and political issues. The creation and
establishment of GSEDG clearly responds with proposed practical and sustainable solutions
and long term tangible projects.
GSEDG Approach
GSEDG is established as an international group of experts with the proven track expertise
required to lead on-going and long term projects to help Bermudan communities through
local, national and international collaborations with individuals, civil societies and government
institution for lasting results.
7
Accounting Transparency
Just as we anticipate, our continued cooperation shall have full transparency; we know that anyone
who will be contributing financially or with equipment, facilities, and services will expect the same
transparency from FAAVM and GSEDG. That is why we will be partnering with large national and/or
international accounting firms that specialize in charitable and non-profit, businesses, government
contracts, bookkeeping and financial services. Every donation, contracts and contribution will be
recorded, tracked, and reported in order to ensure complete transparency.
The Global Socio Economic Development Group (GSEDG)
The Global Socio Economic Development Group (GSEDG) experts are involved in nearly every aspect
of human rights, socioeconomic development, and political reform; humanitarian and environmental
activities ranging from civil rights enforcement, human rights promotions, socio economic research,
development and analysis, to financial and technical assistance to and from governments, private
enterprises and corporate enterprises. The GSEDG shall therefore play a crucial supporting role
towards developing paramount sustainable programs and projects to the Government of Bermuda and
civil societies, aiming to shape and implement their strategies to stimulate socio economic growth.
8
The Global Socio Economic Development Group (GSEDG)
The core institutions that make up the GSEDG are specialized in various aspects of human rights, civil
rights and poverty reduction, corporate expertise, however, they work collaboratively toward the over
aching goal of socio, economic, political and cultural challenges to advance and achieve the United
Nations Millennium Development Goals 2015, through a $100 million sustainable socio-economic and
humanitarian project to the Government of Bermuda through 2010 – 2020.

The Man Productions
The Man Productions was founded in Montreal in 2005 by filmmaker Sophia Male to produce the
documentary "Democracy 4 Dummies". Sophia shoots, edits, writes, directs, and produces, so The
Man Productions is a one stop shop. Since Sophia's last name is Male, she thought it would be funny
to call her production company "The Man", and she also takes great joy in poking fun at "The Man".
Her first film "Democracy 4 Dummies" makes fun of the political system, but also teaches people how
to use it. So she hopes we can all be "The Man" and in part wants to discourage the feeling of
victimization in an often corrupt world. In 2009, Sophia opened an office in Los Angeles, and continues
to develop her own projects and help others create their own films.
The Man Productions has offices in Montreal, Canada and Los Angeles, USA.

FAAVM Global Campaign to Help
Reduce Illiteracy Rate by 50 per cent every 5 years
Raphael Louis – Founder
Email: faavm-afpmv@canada-11.com
Website: http://www.faavm-canada.org
Primary and basic educations for Rural People are preliminary steps toward reducing illiteracy and
setting forth the stage to communicate Sustainable Development knowledge to address rural-urban
socio-economic and human and civil rights disparities.
About 70 percent of the poor populations live in rural areas. Education is a basic right in itself and an
essential prerequisite for achieving all the Millennium Development Goals including reducing poverty,
improving the living conditions of rural people and building a food-secure world. Even so, children's
access to education in rural areas is still much lower than in urban areas, adult illiteracy is much
higher and the quality of education is poorer. This is the reason why, in 2002, during the World
Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the FAO Sustainable Development Department -
Extension, Education and Communication Service (SDRE) and UNESCO established a partnership on
Education for Rural People (ERP) within the International Alliance Against Hunger (IAAH) and
Education for All (EFA) initiatives. The partnership seeks to address rural-urban disparities, which are
a serious concern to governments and the international community as a whole. The partnership, led
by FAO, is a call for member countries, United Nations agencies, Civil Society, academic institutions
and private sector for coordinated, increased efforts in targeting rural people’s needs by promoting
increased access to quality basic education.
FAAVM aims to play a vital role within a global movement to meet the learning needs of all children,
youth and adults by 2015. The movement is launched in 2010 to advance the United Nations
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to massively reduce illiteracy rate by 50 per cent by 2015.
FAAVM communities work to promote the following six (6) grassroots pillars to achieve global
education and reduce illiteracy, and identified six key measurable educational programs which aim to
meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015.
The six educational pillars are:
Goal 1: Build and expand early childhood education, through community school programs
Goal 2: Build and Provide free access to primary education and basic literacy courses for all
Goal 3: Develop and deliver learning and life skills for young people and adults
Goal 4: Reduce adult illiteracy by 50 per cent
Goal 5: Achieve gender equity amongst boys and girls, men and women by 2015
Goal 6: Provide basic access to basic education
The FAAVM goals are to contribute to the global pursuit of the eight Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs), especially MDG 2 on universal primary education and MDG 3 on gender equality in education,
by 2015. FAAVM has also pledged to lead the global movement and coordinate the international
efforts to reach Education for All. We shall work alongside Governments, development agencies, civil
26
society, United Nations bodies, humanitarian relief organizations, non-government organizations and
the media to reach these goals firstly at the local levels.
Building Schools Campaign Oversees - Basic Access to Education for all
The benefits of education go way beyond the obvious advantages of improving life chances. In the
world, as in most developing countries, life can be very precarious and education can be the key to a
person’s very survival, and a route out of poverty. In our campaign activities we have seen many
severely disadvantaged communities. Getting the means to provide sustainable help for them can be
very difficult. However, we shall work directly with NGOs, international Governments, Strategic
Humanitarian Services, for the building and rebuilding schools, with a full feasibility study of the
project, together with a complete breakdown of the costs involved and the level of community
participation that has been promised and can be achieved.

Appendix
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals
(UN-MDGs) 2015
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were developed out of the eight chapters of the United
Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000. There are eight goals with 21 targets, and
a series of measurable indicators for each target.
GOAL 1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER
Target 1: Halve the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day
- Higher food prices may push 100 million people deeper into poverty
- Conflict and natural disasters leaves many displaced and impoverished
Target 2: Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and
young people
- Full employment remains a distant possibility
- Low-paying jobs leave one in five developing country workers mired in poverty
- Half the world’s workforce toil in unstable, insecure jobs
Target 3: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger
- Rising food prices threaten limited gains in alleviating child malnutrition
GOAL 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
Target 1: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a
full course of primary schooling.
- Enrolment in primary education
- Completion of primary education
- Literacy of 15-24 year olds, female and male
- Political will, coupled with targeted investments, have yielded widespread progress in primary
school enrolment, poverty’s grip keeps children out of school
GOAL 3: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
Target 1: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in
all levels of education no later than 2015
- Ratios of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education
- Share of women in wage employment in the non-agricultural sector
- Proportion of seats held by women in national parliament
- Girls still wait for equal primary school access in some regions
- Women slowly gain ground in political decision-making, but progress is erratic and marked by
regional differences, Job opportunities open up, but women often remain trapped in insecure,
low-paid positions.
GOAL 4: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
28
Target 1: Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate
Despite progress, deaths of fewer than five children remain unacceptably high Vaccinations have
slashed deaths from measles.
GOAL 5: IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH
Target 1: Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio
- The high risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth continues unabated in sub-Saharan Africa and
Southern Asia
- Little progress has been made in saving mothers’ lives
- Skilled health workers at delivery are key to improving outcomes
Target 2: Achieve universal access to reproductive health
- Antenatal care is on the rise everywhere
- Adolescent fertility is declining slowly
- An unmet need for family planning undermines achievement of several other goals
GOAL 6: COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES
Target 1: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS
- Despite small victories, AIDS continues to take a terrible toll, especially in sub-Saharan Africa
In almost every region, women represent a growing share of people living with HIV Prevention
program are yielding results
- Antiretroviral drugs are adding years to peoples’ lives, but the need for treatment still
outpaces the available supply
- Planning for children orphaned by AIDS is increasing, but tangible support is slow in coming
Target 2: Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it
- Antiretroviral drugs are adding years to peoples’ lives, but the need for treatment still
outpaces the available supply
- Planning for children orphaned by AIDS is increasing, but tangible support is slow in coming
Target 3: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major
diseases
- Despite tremendous progress, use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets falls short of global
targets
- New malaria treatment strategies are effective, but underutilized
- Progress towards tuberculosis targets is mixed
- Halving the tuberculosis prevalence rate by 2015 is unlikely
GOAL 7: ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Target 1: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and
reverse the loss of environmental resources
- Immediate action is needed to contain rising greenhouse gas emissions
- Success in limiting ozone-depleting substances is also helping to mitigate climate change
Target 2: Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss
29
- Marine areas and land conservation need greater attention
- Deforestation slows and more forests are designated for biodiversity conservation
- The number of species threatened with extinction is rising rapidly
- Fish stocks require improved fisheries management to reduce depletion
Target 3: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking
water and basic sanitation
- Almost half of the world’s population face a scarcity of water
- More people are using improved sanitation facilities, but meeting the target will require a
redoubling of efforts
- In developing regions, nearly one in four uses no form of sanitation
- Though access to improved drinking water has expanded, nearly one billion people do without
- Women shoulder the largest burden in collecting water
Target 4: By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum
dwellers
- Simple, low-cost interventions could significantly improve the lives of many slum dwellers
GOAL 8: DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
Target 1: Address the special needs of least developed countries, landlocked countries and small
island developing states
- Development aid falls for the second year, jeopardizing commitments for 2010
- Development assistance will have to increase substantially to double aid to Africa by 2010
Target 2: Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial
system
- Market access for most developing countries is little improved
- Domestic agricultural subsidies by rich countries overshadow money
spent on development aid
- Trade-related assistance needs to be increased
Target 3: Deal comprehensively with developing countries’ debt
- Developing countries are shouldering less debt
Target 4: In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs
in developing countries
- Poor availability and high prices are barriers to access to essential drugs in developing
countries
Target 5: In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies,
especially information and communications
- Mobile phones are expanding communications in developing countries
- Internet use is increasing rapidly, but the poorest regions lag behind

  • 4. 4 About FAAVM The FAAVM is a non-profit organization, whereas our major focus involves using various multifunctional civil rights programmes to help our mostly disadvantaged, underprivileged minorities as men, women and children. Via the FAAVM multilateral humanitarian systems, and activities, we're able to reach out to these people who are very difficult to reach via more traditional-type programmes. We then use these activities to help improve the quality of life of these disadvantaged communities nationwide and worldwide. Our all-volunteer network nationwide program is comprised of several components, all having to do with providing meaningful and positive educational, socio-cultural, spiritual, economic, political and overall human development activities for our mostly economically disadvantaged nationwide and worldwide. A major objective is our use of national and international legally binding humanitarian instruments, norms, precepts and principles in order to intervene to outreach communities that are often very difficult to otherwise reach. We are then able to impact these communities in many positive ways. We promote early education, child welfare, gender equity, social justice, global peace and socio economic development, youth empowerment and the overall growth and advancement process. We emphasize on maximizing positive human potential, drug education/prevention, healthy living, decreased street violence, improved reading and writing skills, and learning to respect others from diverse backgrounds. Our Mission Our Mission is help to reduce poverty and encourage economic growth. The debate on globalization and the fights against discrimination only serve to increase awareness about how much is at stake in social development. Our goals are ambitious: to improve the quality of life and extend socioeconomic benefits and empowerment broadly throughout civil societies, governments and minority communities. Now we are seeking a growing consensus from both governments and wealthier communities around the world and a renewed commitment on the part of national and international civil communities and governments to collaborate and harmonize the many efforts under way. FAAVM organization is involved in nearly every aspect of human rights, civil rights and human development, with activities ranging from economic development and advancement, legislative research projects, global partnership and trade, to financial and technical assistance from governments and private enterprises. The FAAVM plays an important supporting role as developing communities to shape, and implement their strategies to reduce poverty and stimulate human growth. We also place a high priority on communicating knowledge about development.

So she hopes we can all be "The Man" and in part wants to discourage the feeling of victimization in an often corrupt world. • 25. 25 FAAVM Global Campaign to Help Reduce Illiteracy Rate by 50 per cent every 5 years Raphael Louis – Founder Email: faavm-afpmv@canada-11.com Website: http://www.faavm-canada.org Primary and basic educations for Rural People are preliminary steps toward reducing illiteracy and setting forth the stage to communicate Sustainable Development knowledge to address rural-urban socio-economic and human and civil rights disparities. About 70 percent of the poor populations live in rural areas. Education is a basic right in itself and an essential prerequisite for achieving all the Millennium Development Goals including reducing poverty, improving the living conditions of rural people and building a food-secure world. Even so, children's access to education in rural areas is still much lower than in urban areas, adult illiteracy is much higher and the quality of education is poorer. This is the reason why, in 2002, during the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the FAO Sustainable Development Department - Extension, Education and Communication Service (SDRE) and UNESCO established a partnership on Education for Rural People (ERP) within the International Alliance Against Hunger (IAAH) and Education for All (EFA) initiatives. The partnership seeks to address rural-urban disparities, which are a serious concern to governments and the international community as a whole. The partnership, led by FAO, is a call for member countries, United Nations agencies, Civil Society, academic institutions and private sector for coordinated, increased efforts in targeting rural people’s needs by promoting increased access to quality basic education. FAAVM aims to play a vital role within a global movement to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015. The movement is launched in 2010 to advance the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to massively reduce illiteracy rate by 50 per cent by 2015. FAAVM communities work to promote the following six (6) grassroots pillars to achieve global education and reduce illiteracy, and identified six key measurable educational programs which aim to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015. The six educational pillars are: Goal 1: Build and expand early childhood education, through community school programs Goal 2: Build and Provide free access to primary education and basic literacy courses for all Goal 3: Develop and deliver learning and life skills for young people and adults Goal 4: Reduce adult illiteracy by 50 per cent Goal 5: Achieve gender equity amongst boys and girls, men and women by 2015 Goal 6: Provide basic access to basic education The FAAVM goals are to contribute to the global pursuit of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially MDG 2 on universal primary education and MDG 3 on gender equality in education, by 2015. FAAVM has also pledged to lead the global movement and coordinate the international efforts to reach Education for All. We shall work alongside Governments, development agencies, civil

Building Schools Campaign Oversees - Basic Access to Education for all The benefits of education go way beyond the obvious advantages of improving life chances. In the world, as in most developing countries, life can be very precarious and education can be the key to a person’s very survival, and a route out of poverty. In our campaign activities we have seen many severely disadvantaged communities. Getting the means to provide sustainable help for them can be very difficult. However, we shall work directly with NGOs, international Governments, Strategic Humanitarian Services, for the building and rebuilding schools, with a full feasibility study of the project, together with a complete breakdown of the costs involved and the level of community participation that has been promised and can be achieved. About the Civil Rights Party of Canada The primary purpose of the Civil Rights Party is to participate in Federal Election in accordance and adherence with Elections Canada legislation as defined under the Canada Elections Act. • 27. 27 Appendix The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN-MDGs) 2015 The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were developed out of the eight chapters of the United Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000. There are eight goals with 21 targets, and a series of measurable indicators for each target. GOAL 1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER Target 1: Halve the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day - Higher food prices may push 100 million people deeper into poverty - Conflict and natural disasters leaves many displaced and impoverished Target 2: Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people - Full employment remains a distant possibility - Low-paying jobs leave one in five developing country workers mired in poverty - Half the world’s workforce toil in unstable, insecure jobs Target 3: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger - Rising food prices threaten limited gains in alleviating child malnutrition GOAL 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION Target 1: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling. - Enrolment in primary education - Completion of primary education - Literacy of 15-24 year olds, female and male - Political will, coupled with targeted investments, have yielded widespread progress in primary school enrolment, poverty’s grip keeps children out of school GOAL 3: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN Target 1: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015 - Ratios of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education - Share of women in wage employment in the non-agricultural sector - Proportion of seats held by women in national parliament - Girls still wait for equal primary school access in some regions - Women slowly gain ground in political decision-making, but progress is erratic and marked by regional differences, Job opportunities open up, but women often remain trapped in insecure, low-paid positions. GOAL 4: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
  • 28. 28 Target 1: Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate Despite progress, deaths of fewer than five children remain unacceptably high Vaccinations have slashed deaths from measles. GOAL 5: IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH Target 1: Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio - The high risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth continues unabated in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia - Little progress has been made in saving mothers’ lives - Skilled health workers at delivery are key to improving outcomes Target 2: Achieve universal access to reproductive health - Antenatal care is on the rise everywhere - Adolescent fertility is declining slowly - An unmet need for family planning undermines achievement of several other goals GOAL 6: COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES Target 1: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS - Despite small victories, AIDS continues to take a terrible toll, especially in sub-Saharan Africa In almost every region, women represent a growing share of people living with HIV Prevention program are yielding results - Antiretroviral drugs are adding years to peoples’ lives, but the need for treatment still outpaces the available supply - Planning for children orphaned by AIDS is increasing, but tangible support is slow in coming Target 2: Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it - Antiretroviral drugs are adding years to peoples’ lives, but the need for treatment still outpaces the available supply - Planning for children orphaned by AIDS is increasing, but tangible support is slow in coming Target 3: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases - Despite tremendous progress, use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets falls short of global targets - New malaria treatment strategies are effective, but underutilized - Progress towards tuberculosis targets is mixed - Halving the tuberculosis prevalence rate by 2015 is unlikely GOAL 7: ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Target 1: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources - Immediate action is needed to contain rising greenhouse gas emissions - Success in limiting ozone-depleting substances is also helping to mitigate climate change Target 2: Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss
  • 29. 29 - Marine areas and land conservation need greater attention - Deforestation slows and more forests are designated for biodiversity conservation - The number of species threatened with extinction is rising rapidly - Fish stocks require improved fisheries management to reduce depletion Target 3: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation - Almost half of the world’s population face a scarcity of water - More people are using improved sanitation facilities, but meeting the target will require a redoubling of efforts - In developing regions, nearly one in four uses no form of sanitation - Though access to improved drinking water has expanded, nearly one billion people do without - Women shoulder the largest burden in collecting water Target 4: By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers - Simple, low-cost interventions could significantly improve the lives of many slum dwellers GOAL 8: DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT Target 1: Address the special needs of least developed countries, landlocked countries and small island developing states - Development aid falls for the second year, jeopardizing commitments for 2010 - Development assistance will have to increase substantially to double aid to Africa by 2010 Target 2: Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system - Market access for most developing countries is little improved - Domestic agricultural subsidies by rich countries overshadow money spent on development aid - Trade-related assistance needs to be increased Target 3: Deal comprehensively with developing countries’ debt - Developing countries are shouldering less debt Target 4: In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries - Poor availability and high prices are barriers to access to essential drugs in developing countries Target 5: In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications - Mobile phones are expanding communications in developing countries - Internet use is increasing rapidly, but the poorest regions lag behind
