Welcome, everyone!

PersuasiveWriting
Persuasive writing is written work that tries to
convince a reader to do something or to believe
what you believe about a certain topic. I
t takes
a position for or against something.
The 5-paragraph essay:
1.Introduction/Thesis statement
2. Argument 1with support
3. Argument 2 with support
4. Argument 3 with support
5. Conclusion
GenericStructureofPersuasivetext:
Firstly,
knowyour audience!
Before you start writing, you should know your audience.
Secondly,pickaside!
The writer must clearly state his/her position and stay with that position.
Pick a side!
Thirdly,research!
I
n order to convince the reader
you need more than just an
opinion;you need facts or
examples to back your opinion.
So, be sure to do the research!
Fourthly,brainstorming!
Let’s
start
writing!
What makes a good introduction?
•It grabs or “hooks” the reader’s
attention by using one or more of the
following strategies:
–A quotation
–An interesting fact
–A question
–A writer’s point of view
•Supporting details (1or 2 sentences)
•The author’s position is clearly
stated in the thesis statement.
TheGreat I
ntroduction
Youcouldbegintheparagraphwithaquotation
Example:
“If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog,” said Harry
Truman (former president of the United States).
“Did you know that dogs are more trainable than other pets,
can protect you, and promote a more active lifestyle?”
Youcouldopenwithaninteresting fact
Example:
How much do you really love your dog?
Youcouldopenwithaquestion:
“Dogs are the smartest pets ever ”
.
Youcouldopenwithwriter’sopinion:
Next:SupportingdetailsandThesisstatement
•Supporting details are examples, facts, steps, or other kinds of
evidence that explain the main idea.
•I
t May consist of 2 or 3
sentences E.g.
There is really no denying it. Goldfish, hamsters, and cats do not
compare. Some of them also are trained to assist police and other
law enforcement officers. “what makes dogs so great?” You may ask.
Next:CreatingaThesisStatement
•A thesis statement is one sentence at the end of your
introduction that states your opinion.
•First, choose 2 or 3 main focus points to discuss in your essay. These
points will become the focus of the paragraph.
That’s easy. It’s because they are affectionate, smart, and easy to
care for.
Whydogsmakethebestpet?
Paragraph 1
:Intro and thesis statement
"Did you know that dogs are more trainable than other pets, can
protect you, and promote a more active lifestyle?”. There is really no
denying it. Goldfish, hamsters, and cats do not compare. Some of
them also are trained to assist police and other law enforcement
officers. “what makes a dog so great?” You may ask. That’s easy. It’s
because they are affectionate, smart, and easy to care for.
ThreeSupportingParagraphs
•Use each of the main arguments you used in your introductory
paragraph and expand on each giving facts and reasons.
•In our example, you would write one paragraph about "why dogs are
affectionate”
, one paragraph about "
why dogs are easy to care for”
and one paragraph about "why dogs are smart”.
Paragraph2:whydogsareaffectionate?
•Ifyou have a tough day school, what do you want to come home
to? Do you want to come home to a cat that just looks at you so
bored until you feed it? No way! How about coming home to a loving
dog instead? If you are sad, a good dog will comfort you right away.
A dog will jump up on your lap and lick your face until you can’t help
but smile.
Paragraph3:whydogsareeasytocarefor?
•Dogs are easy to take care for
. As long as you feed them, love them
and train them, caring for a dog is a breeze. You don’t have to worry
about cleaning out a dirty litter box or fish bowl.
Paragraph4:whydogsaresmart?
•Dogs are also super smart. They can play fun games, like fetch. This
means they are easy to train. You can teach them to use the
bathroom outside. Most dogs learn this pretty fast and don’t forget it.
You can also teach a dog tricks. With some patience and positive
reinforcement, you can train them to put on your dog on a show.
Concludeor endyour essay…
What makes a good conclusion?
·Last paragraphs summarize your main
point.
·End your essay:Call the reader to
action
Paragraph5:ConcludingParagraph:
I
n closing,it’s so joyful to have a dog at home. I
t can
cause positive vibes and happiness in the family. If
you’re thinking about getting a new pet,Isuggest
you choose a dog. After all, they’re men’s best
friends.
Let'stryit!
I
t'slovelytomeet
all of you!
Do you have any questions for me?
