“In my mind, every Biology book should have
a Foldscope as the last page, Because you’re
not just imparting knowledge, you’re also
imparting the tools to gain that knowledge”

6. A Foldscope is an optical microscope that
can be assembled from simple
components, including a sheet of paper,
Magnetic couplers and a lens.

7. • The Foldscope was developed by a team led by
Manu Prakash, an Assistant Professor
of Bioengineering at Stanford School of
Medicine
• The idea for creating a low-cost microscope
came to Prakash in 2011 while he was at a field
station in Thailand
• He remarked that the station had a very
expensive microscope but that everyone was
afraid to use it because it was fragile and worth
more than most people's salaries.

8. • He wanted to create an affordable
microscope that would be versatile
and sturdy enough to work in field
conditions

12. • A device that people feel they had
ownership of, that’s the reason the
Foldscope comes in a kit to be
assembled.
• He developed the first prototype in
2014

13. • A Foldscope can be assembled from a
punched sheet of cardstock, a spherical
glass lens and few Magnetic couplers.
• a Light Emitting Diode along with battery
that powers the LED is an accessory.
• Once assembled, the Foldscope weighs 8
grams and comes in a kit that provide
magnification at 140X.

17. • Those who received the Foldscope kits
were encouraged to share their
experiences using the microscope on a
website, Microcosmos, so that Prakash's
team could see how people could use
the Foldscope.

Foldscope’ Journey: travelling rapidly around
the world, in the hands of scientists, medical
workers, students, teachers and even people
outside the scientific community.
The device is in constant evolution: recent
improvements allow for dark-field microscopy
(visualizing objects against a black background)
and bright field microscopy (imaging objects
against bright light); it now features focus-
locking mechanisms

Preparation of Slide
• Normal Slide and cover with Coverslip-
water drop, microorganisms, pollen,
leaf, root sections etc.
• Cavity Slide for little bigger & living
ones– Ant, drosophila, Cyclops, Moina,
Head lice,
