This document provides an overview of existing literature on long-term effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on insect populations and proposes best practices for future studies. It finds that only a limited number of studies have explicitly investigated insect population trends in response to ALAN over multiple seasons or years. Most studies are limited in their temporal duration or resolution. The document outlines key light measurement concepts and recommends standardizing assessment methods to better evaluate ALAN as a potential driver of insect declines. It presents guidelines for long-term study designs combining regular insect sampling with robust light pollution documentation to improve understanding of ALAN's ecological impacts on insects.
