In this passage from Jane Austen's novel, Persuasion, she highlights Anne's distracted thoughts and

"Framing" is another persuasion technique used to sell us items we do not need. For instance, I am
dead set that my son must always be in a Britax car seat, in fact just this past week I moved him
into their newest model with side airbags because it increases his change of surviving a roll–over
crash by 15%. They rate the highest on safety always and I will not take anything less. These seats
also cost around $300.00, but nothing is too much for the safety of my son. This is an example of

friendly. He also showed me how their vehicle was one of the only that could be switched to
eco–mode which would save me a ton of money in gas. And then he assured me my warranty
would be extended to cover me with their European counterparts, which he told me no other car

Although often unresisted and unintentional, rhetoric and persuasion still inundate and influence
contemporary society. Persuasion can be evident in numerous forms, like television, radio, art,
speeches, and daily conversations. Also, Aristotle originally proclaimed that persuasion is an

rhetoric methods are complex, understanding what to argue and how to argue is just as important as
the argument itself. If the persuader has a sufficient understanding of the audience, they can use the
methods of Aristotle's three most powerful tools of persuasion: argument by character, argument by
logic, and argument by emotion. These elemental, rhetorical devices, known as Logos, Pathos, and
Ethos, are used to further connect the audience, opposition, with the persuader. Furthermore, these
tactics, if used correctly by the persuader, will make the audience more attentive, receptive, and
willing. For instance, "Your audience also has to consider you a good person who wants to do the
right thing and will not use them for your own nefarious purposes" (56). Therefore, the use of
emotion, logic, and character will make the argument appear much stronger and trustworthy.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of an argument is strongly based on the foundation and approach of the

Jane Austen is a successful classic romance novelist, one of her many novels is Persuasion, a novel
that portrays love. She published six novels that all relate to the theme of love and marriage along

world of men, a world created for women and by women" (Walzer 689). Persuasion brings into
literature a new look on females especially through the naГЇve and easily persuaded Anne Elliot.
Anne Elliot is the quiet female character who majorly conforms to society and what it dictates as
indicated by her mentor Lady Russell. Anne "with an elegance of mind and sweetness of

of men or the embodiment of masculine traits (Walzer 689). Female voices and perspectives are
used to counter the male dominance of society and of the home (Walzer 689). Also, she creates a
"realm set in opposition to the public, political world of men, a world created for women and by
women in the novel" which allows the female characters and their feminine traits to be exalted rather
than be made dependent on the masculine traits (Walzer 697). This entire book centers around a man
recognizing femininity as something to be exalted and cherished rather than left dependent on men
