The College & Career Readiness & College Completion Act was signed by the Governor of Maryland in 2013. Hopefully, in a few years’ time college instructors will find that the students entering their classes are better prepared. But what do we do in the meantime? The ability to embed student success skills into the course curriculum is essential so that students can develop techniques that will improve their chances of success throughout their college career. The following topics were shared during the presentation: concept mapping, critical thinking, tips for proper reading of a textbook, time management, notetaking tips, how to condense information covered in class, and how to research and write a paper. The challenge of teaching student success skills during the semester is that of completing all required course information at the same time. Participants were asked to discuss potential methods of creating time within their courses so that student success techniques could be taught.

Company culture is more than just having a ping pong table and the occasional happy hour. It’s the essence of a business: the pervasive vision, values, and systems pulsing within employees, management, atmosphere and more. Some like to call it the genetic code of a company, though in some circumstances it can be more malleable than that. More and more, good company culture is being recognized as vital to a company’s success; on the flip side, toxic culture has been witnessed contributing to huge failures. Built into business at its most basic level, company culture is both the result of a company’s structure and the support that keeps it standing. It’s both an outcome of hiring choices, and the force that drives them. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle: a company shapes its culture and the culture shapes the company, over and over or all at once.

Creating and Sustaining a Business Culture establishes a framework for how leaders can build and sustain a great organizational culture. An organization's culture is its roots, the principles and practices which feed its employees and drives customer loyalty. This presentation starts off by framing the importance of culture to an organization's success and follows with a look at the critical elements that go into building and sustaining a powerful business culture, one that provides a competitive advantage for the organization.

Company culture is an area that’s received more attention and focus over the years as businesses have seen and felt the power and difference it can make. In fact, in 2014 Merriam-Webster announced that “culture” was the word of the year, with more lookups than any other word. And in that same year, a global survey conducted by McKinsey & Co. found that spending time on culture was a key priority of C-Suite executives. This is exactly why the world’s most successful companies understand that everything starts and ends with culture, and use culture as a competitive advantage. They clearly define it, effectively weave it into everything they formally and informally do, and consistently and effectively deliver against it across the entire organization. And if you want further proof of the importance of culture, just look at how many HR roles now have the word “culture” in the job title. “Culture is the underlying fabric that holds an organization together. When the fabric is strong, groups can endure major challenges and thrive during better times. If the fabric is tattered, groups may manage to get by, but employees, projects and clients fall through the gaps.” Kevin Oakes - ‘Culture Renovation’ In this Guide, you’ll learn more on What is Culture Why is Culture Important How to build your Culture Maintaining your Culture “Garden”

While organizational culture has been touted since the early 1990’s as essential for business success, there has been little connection between organizational culture and individual (employee – candidate) “fit”. We have found that having the knowledge of “who you are” and “who you are not” from a cultural perspective, can support the creation of an employment experience that is both authentic and congruent. By paying attention to congruence, alignment and fit, organizations can create an employment message that will attract, retain and repel employees. This process of ensuring “fit” leads to better placements and an increase in the ROI of recruitment and retention programs.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

“Culture is how organiza-ons ‘do things’.” -Robbie Katanga
6.
Culture is consistent, observable paMerns of behavior in organiza-ons. Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do.”
7.
For example, Southwest Airlines: Airlines are oBen hot-spots for dissa-sfied employees, and therefore dissa-sfied customers. Southwest Airlines goes against those trends by communica-ng their goals and vision. They create a unified team with a common purpose.
8.
Southwest gives employees “permission” do a liMle more to make customers happy. Employees feel empowered and help one another meet the vision of the company.
9.
“In large part, culture is a product of compensa-on.” — Alec Havers-ck
10.
Second example, TwiMer: Employees of TwiMer have rooBop mee-ngs and a focus on team-work. They also get free meals at the San Francisco headquarters and some even have free yoga classes and extra -me off.
11.
TwiMer’s employees love working with their talented team members. They feel valued and part of a greater purpose.
12.
“Organiza-onal culture is civiliza-on in the workplace.” — Alan Adler
13.
Final Example, Adobe: Adobe is a company that challenges its employees and gives extra trust to their decision making skills and avoids micro-managing. They encourage crea-vity.
14.
“PuZng trust in your employees goes a long way towards posi-ve company culture, because trust leads to independent employees who help your company grow.” - hMp://www.entrepreneur.com/ar-cle/249174 Charles Geschke and John Warnock, founders of Adobe
15.
More ideas:
16.
Review: 1. “You are what you do.” Authorize employees to do good. 2. “Compensate.” Create a posi-ve, crea-ve working environment. 3. “Civilize the workplace.” Trust employees to get the job done. 4. Communicate. 5. Create SMART goals. 6. Show gra-tude
