3. Hugo Zuccarelli
Born in Argentina .
Studied electrical engineering at Polytechnic of
Milan in Italy.
Studied the mathematics of the human hearing
mechanism.
Best known for his invention of the
Holophonic.
4. The Holophonic Sound
In 1983 he released the “Zuccarelli Holophonic”
Created based on theory that:
“The auditory system is a sound emitter that combines with incoming sounds to create
an interference pattern inside the ear”
Binaural: A recording technique which uses two microphones to create the intention of
3d stereo sound. Also known as dummy head recording.
Interferometer: A term used to describe various techniques in which waves are
superimposed to obtain information.
5. Ringo
Zuccarelli created robotic microphone ‘Ringo’ emits a high pitched whistle, or ringing
sound just like the human ear does.
● People often hear a ringing in their ears after
leaving a loud environment and entering a
quiet one. More aggressive ringing is needed
for the ear to localize sound in noisy
environments, and takes a while to adjust to
its surroundings.
He discovered that the ringing we often hear in our ears is there to help us localize
sound. The ringing is essential for localization, but it's very important this sound is
subjective in order for us to live with it.
6. The Holophonic Controversy
It is not uncommon for Holophonic sound to be considered insubstantial, the reason it is
regarded this way is because:
● The effects achieved are comparable to traditional binaural recording using
mannequin heads, or via more traditional 3D audio techniques via HRTF's.
● There is no evidence nor studies conducted that indicate that the
Holophonic technique is substantially different from or superior to these
methods, nor has Zucharelli ever published his technique, nor has he allowed
independent study of the results.
● The only available publication is a patent, which describes a fairly typical
dummy-head binaural recording.
7. Works
● Zuccarelli’s Holophonic recordings have been
featured at Disneyland and Disney World
● His work has been featured in several museum
exhibits, including the Children’s Museum in
Pittsburgh (2004) and The Science Museum in Los
Angeles (2000) as well as in advertising for many
international corporations.
● In the recording industry, Hugo Zuccarelli has
collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie,
Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson and many more...
9. Delia Derbyshire
● 5th May 1937 – 3th July 2001
● English Musician and composer
● Electronic music pioneer
● Best known for creating Ron Grainer’s
Doctor Who theme music
● BBC trainee studio manager in 1960
● Worked for BBCs Radiophonic Workshop
10. Radiophonic Workshop
● Sound effects unit for the BBC - 1958
● Worked here for 11 years + made almost 200 radio and TV programs
● This was initially set up as a service for department for Radio Drama
● Derbyshire was the first person there with any higher music qualifications
● She was asked to create music and sounds that portrayed something out of place -
set in the distant past or unseen future
● Abstract style benefited science, arts and education programs
● She was hardly ever credited and her name is almost unknown
11. Doctor Who
● Derbyshire created the Doctor Who theme music, which was written by Ron Grainer
● Recorded in 1963
● One of the first TV themes to be created and produced entirely by electronic means
● 3 separate tracks + recorded on 3 seperate machines
