TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION
The Technology aspect of this application is concerned with informing students
about the advantages of making Rosemont Green and Recycle friendly. One of
the biggest problems Rosemont faces is the fact that not enough students are
aware of the recycling process here at Rosemont or are not motivated enough to
participate. This application will try and rectify those issues by addressing
possible solutions to this problem and creating an easy more accessible way to
help students to become more conscious of recycling.
Videos that will be presented
include:
• the app to give students
• condensed information on the
recycling process
• the advantages of recycling
• quick facts about what can and
can’t be recycled
In depth text explanations:
• recycling process
• more detailed
information about
recycling
• where to recycle on
campus
• Various ways to get
involved in the process
VIDEOS AND TEXT APPS
Facebook, Twitter, Instagra
m
• social media will be
linked to this
application that way
students can spread
the word about
recycling
• Updates on the campus
progress
• share ways that
recycling is making a
difference on campus.
RECYCLE ALERT! RECYCLE ALERT!
The app will have a recycle alert feature that can be customized by the
student with various ringtone or alert messages that can be sent to them to
make them aware of any recycling programs or activities that are going on
campus. Students should can also set up this aspect of the application to
remind them to bring all their recyclable to nearby bins at least twice a week.
The app will also tell them the amount of time that has elapsed since they last
recycled, that way students are more aware of the recycling habits and
hopefully improve upon the based off the applications results. This feature of
the application’s primary goal is get students involved, and keep track of their
results because if students can actually see their results and see that they are
making a difference it will motivate them to continue good recycling habits.
NEWS OF THE DAY
This feature of the application:
• Will give daily updates on what others on the Rosemont campus are doing
in terms of recycling.
• It will rank students based off their digital recycling print, meaning how
much of a certain thing is the student recycling it will be ranked according to
categories such as, paper, bottles, etc.
• Goal is to spark friendly competition among students as well as give
students insights into each others habits.
• Alert system will give daily reminders as to what students should avoid
when it comes to the recycling process such as Styrofoam and plastics.
• This will hopefully get students to stop using non recyclable materials and
promote reuse and sustainability.
The Personal Effects of Recycling!
- If we don’t recycle the waste becomes uncontainable and
will spill into our farming areas, forests, and water
sources.
- There is money in recycling. In the level of the
individual, one of the benefits of recycling is financial
income. There are a lot of things lying around the house
that we no longer want or need that might just end up in a
dumpsite somewhere, that we can recycle and earn money
from.
- Recycling helps conserve limited resources – Throwing
away a single aluminum can, versus recycling it, is like
pouring out six ounces of gasoline.
- Recycling is energy efficient – On a larger scale, recycling could translate
into huge reductions in our energy costs.
- Recycling creates jobs – Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one
job; landfilling 10,000 tons of waste creates six jobs; recycling 10,000 tons
of waste creates 36 jobs.
- The possibility of dangerous chemicals coming from the solid waste
deposited in these landfills, contaminating underground water supply is
always present. Combustion or incineration of our solid waste is effective
and energy-generating, but we pay the price in increased air pollution
The Personal Effects of Recycling! Continues
How to Avoid Things That are Non-Recyclable!
- Buy more of and recycle Newsprint Office Paper, Computer Paper, Phone Books Paper
Grocery Bags Paper, Egg Cartons, PAPER CARDBOARD instead of Soiled Paper Wax or
Plastic-coated Paper Paper Laminated with Foil or Plastic Used Paper
Towels, Napkins, Tissues and Plates Magazines and Catalogs
- Buy Corrugated (packing boxes) Single Wall Cartons (cereal boxes) instead of Waxed
Cardboard Waxed Milk Cartons Soiled Pizza or Frozen Food Boxes.
- Buy and recycle Jars, Bottles (clear, green or brown), Aluminum Cans (soda pop cans) Scrap
Metal Tin Cans instead of GLASS METAL Light Bulbs Window Panes Glassware
(cups, glasses, plates, etc.) Mirrors Bottle and Jar Lids with Plastic Liners Cans Used for
Chemicals or Paint Aerosol Spray Cans.
- buy and recycle Plastic Soda and Juice Bottles Milk Jugs Some Detergent, Oil and
Antifreeze Bottles instead of Grocery Bags and Plastic Bags Styrofoam cups, plates, packing
materials.
Biodegradable
• simply means to be consumed by microorganisms
and return to compounds found in nature i.e.
Hydrocarbons
• environmentally friendly products that are capable of
decomposing back into natural elements like
substances originating from living organisms
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
• New Research: Oxo-biodegradable technology
Product Time to Biodegrade
Apple core 1–2 months
General paper 1–3 months
Paper towel 2–4 weeks
Cardboard box 2 months
Cotton cloth 5 months
Plastic coated milk carton 5 years
Wax coated milk carton 3 months
Tin cans 50–100 years
Aluminium cans 150–200 years
Glass bottles Undetermined (forever)
Plastic bags 500-1000 years
Soft plastic (bottle) 100 years
Hard plastic (bottle cap) 400 years
Pros of Oxo-Biodegradable Technology
• no difference in print quality, texture, or strength between regular and oxo-
biodegradable plastic
• has a long shelf-life. It will last for many years if stored indoors
• Oxo-biodegradable plastic is recyclable. Other forms of degradable plastic
are not.
• will degrade in a landfill and the degradation process does not release
methane.
• Degradable plastic is an insurance policy against litter.
• It will degrade in less than a year
• New legislation in Pakistan requires plastic to be Oxo-Biodegradable -
