Canons of Rhetoric: Speech Analysis So what are the characteristics of an effective public speaker? When beginning public speaking, students are asked the above question. It is often met with responses such as a strong voice, charisma, gestures, addressing the audience in a friendly tone, use of humor, and eye contact. These responses are very similar to one another; they are addressing a speaker's ability to perform for an audience. But this performance is complex, often including other important attributes, such as reasoning with solid information, explaining complex ideas clearly, and providing the audience a clear direction of where the presentation is heading. Situations similar to this one are not uncommon. Many people think of public speaking as the ability to control nerves in front of a group but neglect considering the importance of having ideas well organized before presenting them or practicing a lot to reduce those nerves. Some people think that because they have apprehension about speaking in front a group, they are completely inept in a public speaking situation. They are often surprised to find out that they are only looking at one piece of the puzzle. The Greek philosopher Aristotle and his contemporaries began writing about what has become the field of communication today. In writing about what was called the canons of rhetoric, they were laying the foundation for public speaking as we know it today. Four canons, or categories of criticism, were established: · invention, · arrangement, · style, and · delivery. Invention looks at the creation of ideas. When evaluating a speaker from this point of view, the critic may note whether or not the speaker was found to be an authority on the subject matter. This was known as ethos. The critic also may question the use of evidence presented by the speaker (known as logos) and whether the evidence seems to prove what the speaker leads the audience to think it proves. A speaker's credibility would be examined under this canon, and though opinion based, it plays an important role in a speaker's success. Questions asked under the invention canon might include the following: · How well informed is this speaker? · Does the speaker support claims with reliable evidence that is current and from a credible source? Arrangement allows a critic to analyze the components of a presentation to determine whether or not they accomplish what the speaker intends. For example, a strong introduction usually allows the speaker to capture the audience's attention, to address a central message concisely, and to provide the audience with a clear sense of what path the presentation will be taking. A critic looking at arrangement would be examining the arrangement of ideas and how they contribute to the overall message the speaker intends. Pragmatics and Discourse What is pragmatics? An approach within DA which concentrates on the way language acquires meaning in use. It has developed from the tradition of the philosophy of language known as pragmatics. Focus: The study of contextualised meaning and is concerned with describing the principles that underlie how we interpret the meaning behind words: how we get from what we say to what we mean. Pragmatic approaches tend to be interested in the 'big picture': trying to formulate generalisable principles about how people produce and interpret discourse (egâ€™ the use of humour in business meetingsâ€™). Context Context is an important concept in DA. Language does not take place in a vacuum and we need to consider the context in which it occurs in order to understand it. However, this seemingly unproblematic statement masks the issues and debates that are ongoing in discourse analysis around the concept of context and its significance. Two types of context The 'intrinsic' or 'linguistic' context which refers to information that can be found within the text that surrounds the language that is being analysed at a particular moment. It is generally agreed that this type of context is not only useful but essential. The more problematic type of context lies outside the actual text: what is sometimes called 'extrinsic' (Schegloff 1997) or 'experiential' context. This refers to all sorts of information about setting, situation, social circumstances of the participants such as age, gender, ethnicity and possibly also about the shared background knowledge and assumptions of the participants. So, in the example: 'Later, an item about vasectomy and the results of the do-it-yourself competition' (from Cameron 2001:12) ïƒ˜ The issue with extrinsic context is moving from description to interpretation in research. Along with describing 'what' is happening in the discourse , it is also important to interpret 'why' it is happening. ïƒ˜ Extrinsic contextual evidence can be potentially very useful in discussing why participants say a particular thing in a particular way at a particular time, however, there is also a danger of 'reading too much into the text' and of judging which out of many possible interpretations is the 'right' one. For instance, if the analyst is aware of gender, age or ethic difference among discourse participants, these variables may well appear to influence the discourse but how do we know which of these particular variables are important to the participants in an particular communicative event. ïƒ˜ This is not to say that we should ignore extrinsic context but to suggest that we need to be cautious about what we select as significant and rigorous about how we incorporate it into our analyses. SO308 Principles of Social Research Data Analysis 4: Interview Directions: Choose one participant that will agree to an administration of the interview schedule. Find a quiet and comfortable place that sets your participant as ease. Remember not to deviate from the set interview schedule (although you can give minimal responses to requests for clarification or use neutral prompts or probes to get them going or keep them on track). Give your participant a pseudonym and record no information that could lead to their unique identification. Take detailed and exhaustive notes! Record everything because you may not realize that something is important until after the fact. Remember that the purpose of these content analyses is to gather data about how members of different groups think about, talk about, behave toward, or otherwise respond to another. You don’t have to record information that does not pertain to our purpose, but do record everything that may shed light on our research topic! Take detailed notes during the interview. Include what they said and how they said it [important body language, pauses, and other non-verbal expressions should be noted in square brackets]. Find a quite place as soon after the interview is concluded to record your notes into this form. Clean your notes by removing your shorthand and explaining every detail. Remember that these notes need to be understandable on their own. Include everything and add additional details as you recall them. When you add detail after the fact in this first pass, use “Bright Green” text to distinguish it from your first observations. Then set your notes aside for about 24 hours so that you can think about them some more. Make a third pass through your notes and use “Blue” text to distinguish these subsequent reflections from your first observations and your initial additions. It is important to make these distinctions clear because your understanding of the interview may change with time. Do not worry if your first, second, and third passes through your data agree with one another. Again, your perspective may change. It is important that you do not delete previous notes, but merely add to them each time through. Finally, in all three passes, be careful to distinguish between what was said and your interpretation of what was said. Actual descriptions should be recorded in regular text (in the appropriate color), but your interpretations, opinions, and inferences from the data should be italicized. Try to maintain this “fact-value” distinction as carefully as you can (although it is impossible to be perfect in this regard). You can use as many pages for your notes as you need. In addition to environmental benefits associated with limiting the disposal of traditional batteries, energy harvesting technologies [3] provide a great promising of autonomous and self-powered electronic devices for safety monitoring, structure-embedded diagnosis and medical implants. The narrowband issues of linear resonant piezoelectric energy harvesters have motivated several research groups to develop the nonlinear monostable [4], bistable [5] and tristable [6] approaches to enhance frequency bandwidth and output power. The theoretical analysis and experimental verification of those nonlinear energy harvesters have been extensively investigated under harmonic and stochastic excitations [7-9]. For the realistic excitation, Green [2] numerically analyzed the efficiency of nonlinear energy harvesting from human motion and Cao [10] applied the time-varying potential bistable energy harvester to human motion to demonstrate its better performance than the linear one. However, tristable energy harvesting performance has not yet been evaluated under realistic excitations induced by human motions. Therefore, the paper employs tristable magnetic coupled piezoelectric cantilever to harvest energy from human walking and running. Based on the characteristics of human motion, theoretical model of nonlinear tristable energy harvester with time-varying potential energy function is established. And experiment results show that the tristable energy harvester exhibits better performance than the linear one when applied to harvesting energy from human walking and running. 2. 1. If I were to create an SEL program, I would focus on: self-awareness, relationship skills and decision-making. I would focus on these skills and values because they are integral in developing emotional intelligence. Self-awareness could be instilled through different activities where a person takes different tests and conducts activities to learn more about their own emotions. By understanding and managing their emotions, they can be more aware to how they act. Additionally, relationship skills can be built through participating in different group activities in which they must work together to solve a problem. These group activities will also integrate decision-making, where participants will learn how to respectfully voice opinions and listen to those of others. At the end of the program, there will be a final group activity which integrates the three core skills, and one must display self-awareness, relationship skills and decision-making to complete the activity. 2. This program would be helpful in teaching factors of emotional intelligence, but it would not teach every important aspect. The first strength of this program would be that it teaches self-awareness before relationship skills, because knowing how to manage and process self-emotions is extremely important when working in a team. Additionally, a strength would be that it is an activity-based program, which will keep kids entertained and learning at the same time. The limitation of this program is that it cannot teach everything about social emotional learning such as social awareness or stress management, however it will be a good start in SEL. 1. The three skills that I would focus on if I were to create an SEL program would be Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision Making. 1. I think that the top three management positions in a health plan are Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hospital Administrator and Chief of Nurses. They are the ones in charge of the entire organization and it is imperative that they ensure that everything runs professionally and effectively. Then the Hospital Administrator position is the person responsible of making sure they are working promptly and effectively to generate and manage the budget, quality assurance policies and the hiring of physicians. Their job is also to be responsible in making sure they are up to date with all government regulations and law compliance and by not doing so it can cost them their job and cause fines to their organization.
