Here are examples of magazines
that appeal to me. They are
mostly fashion magazines
however their colour schemes
and layouts appeal to me also. I
like the way V- magazine always
has its mast head in the centre of
the cover in large bold font. Not
many magazines are designed in
this way so, I think it adds to its
individual style and makes it stand
out from the others. Most of the
magazines above have a simple
and plain design. There is little
text or complex images on them. I
also like this design as it appears
to be clean and tidy.
There are also some magazines
with a more complex design. For
example Vanity Fair. These styles
of magazine are busier and have
more complex images and text. I
also like the colour schemes for
the magazines above. Some
follow a commonly used colour
scheme of white red and black
that is used mostly in the fashion
industry particularly by designer
Christian Loboutin. Most of the
magazines also have bold
mastheads. I like the bold fonts
that are used for example in
vogue magazine or in V magazine
because they look clean and tidy.
MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
Here are examples of magazines
that appeal to me. They are all
music magazines some from the
same magazine. The magazines
NME, Rolling Stone, Billboard,
Clash and Vibe all feature here. I
haven’t just picked these
magazines to use as examples
because of the music that they
feature or the artists on the
cover. I like the colour schemes
and layouts of them also. For
example Clash magazine adopts a
very simplistic and minimalistic
design for the front cover. I like
this because it appears neat and
clean.
Some of these colour palates appeal
to me and could possibly be used in
my magazine. Many of them fit in
with seasons. For example the
Billboard cover featuring Beyonce
uses pinks and yellows. This would
suggest that this issue of Billboard
was released in the summer time
because these are colours that are
often associated with the summer
time. Whereas the example of
Billboard situated at the top second
in from the right would be a good
colour palate for a winter edition
because it uses darker and deeper
colours. I think that
MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
These are two main examples of magazines that I like. V magazine is an American fashion magazine that has been published since 1999. The magazine is
printed seasonally and highlights trends in fashion, film, music and art. i-D magazine is a British magazine that is dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth
culture. i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980. I would like to take inspiration and ideas from both these magazines
for my magazine. I like the simple minimalistic appearance of them both because I think it keeps the covers looking clean and tidy. I like the way V magazine
always has its masthead in the centre of the cover, covering images and text. I think this makes the V seem important and it stands out from other magazines
who usually have their mast heads in the top left corner. I think the way i-D always has a tag line in the same place creates a similar effect. It creates a brand
for the magazine that fans and readers can look out for. I also think it emphasises what the tag line says. If it is one of the only pieces of text on the cover then
the readers eye is immediately drawn to it.
MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
V magazine is one of the few magazines that do
not have the mast head at the top of the page.
Instead, V magazine has its masthead in the centre
of the page taking up more space. This makes the
magazine different from others; it stands out as
individual. Although the letter V is transparent to
blend with the background image, it remains bold
and noticeable because of the distinct placement
acting as the centre of visual interest.
The colour palate below is taken from the cover page. The four main colours that have been used contrast each other in pairs. Black and white have both
been used for each model. Black and white are commonly used in contrast to each other throughout the fashion industry. This helps the magazine to appeal
to its target audience and appear to be in with trends. Secondly, the colours green and blue have been used. These two colours, when used together connote
earth. This then contrasts the two models who are wearing little clothing portraying a sexual ora for the magazine. These colours may also have been used to
fit in with the season that the magazine was released in.
Overall, V magazine has a very plain and quiet
design. There is little text and even though the
cover lines are in bold text and contrasting colours
there are no ascenders or descenders to take up
more space. The overall design does not follow a
typical F, H or Z format however I think this
contributes to V magazines individual style. The
cover lines usually relate to the image and V
magazine follows this. The models names are
written in the largest font in the centre of the text
to appear the most significant and attract the
target market.
V magazine is one of the few
magazines that do not have the mast
head at the top of the page. Instead,
V magazine has its masthead in the
centre of the page taking up more
space. This makes the magazine
different from others; it stands out as
individual. Although the letter V is
transparent to blend with the
background image, it remains bold
and noticeable because of the distinct
placement acting as the centre of
visual interest.
Here, the issue number of the magazine is shown.
It lets us know which edition the magazine is from.
This number is in a smaller font to the masthead
because it is less significant.
V magazine is a women’s fashion magazine. This
the image shown on the cover would relate to a
woman interested in fashion because it is of two
women who appear to be wearing abstract and
bold clothes. Their outfits contrast from each other
(black and white) further making them stand out.
This issue of V magazine has a clean
and minimalistic design. This design is
followed throughout many V
magazine issues. This creates a brand
for the magazine and makes it more
easily recognisable for the target
audience
The image used on the cover of this
edition of V magazine is of the two
models. They are wearing clothing
that appears to be from high end
fashion and make up that is in trend
but also stands out enough to be
noticed. This makes the magazine
more appealing to its target audience.
V magazine always uses the same style of masthead. I like this because I think it creates a brand
for the magazine and makes it easily recognisable for its readers and audience. I think it makes
it stand out from others. I would like to take inspiration from V magazine in my magazine and
use one large letter that takes up a lot of room but doesn’t hide any images or text. The V in V
magazine is functional but still fashionable.
The colour palate below is taken from the cover page. This magazine uses a classic colour scheme, commonly used within the fashion industry; black white
and red. Typically, the colour red is used to connote anger however, I believe in this instance the colour red has been used as a contrast colour to black and
white.
This issue of Vanity Fair follows the typical Z
formation of a magazine which follows the shape
of the letter z. Readers will start in the top/left,
move horizontally to the top/right and then
diagonally to the bottom/right before finishing
with another horizontal movement to the
bottom/right. The z-pattern is good for simple
designs with a few key elements that need to be
seen.
The Masthead for Vanity Fair is in a large
capital font. It is also in a bold colour from
the palate. This makes it stand out from
the background image to appear to be the
most significant part of the page. The
masthead is also positioned at the top of
the Z where the reader is expected to see
it.
The price of the magazine can be seen in a
smaller font underneath the masthead.
The price of the magazine is written in a
smaller size font and in a less bold colour
than the masthead because it is less
significant than the masthead but
important enough to be shown
No barcode can be seen on the front cover of
Vanity Fair. This may be because the barcode is
on the back of the magazine to make more
room for the content of the cover
The image shown in the background fits with the
colour scheme to keep flow in the magazine cover.
The image has been cropped so we can see a close
up version of the original. This may be because it
appears to be more intimate and bold therefore
making it appeal to the target audience more. This
issue of Vanity Fair is foreign so the girl on the
cover has no relation to me however in Spain,
where this issue was released, the girl may be of
interest attracting the target audience further.
This issue of the magazine features large tag lines
and text across the front of the page. The tag lines
have been placed to fit in with the Z style design
which is made to suit where the reader casts their
eyes. The main tag line is in bold and a contrasting
colour to the background. This makes it stand out
against the rest and draws the readers eye to
interest them therefore making them want to buy
the magazine.
Vanity Fair is a highly regarded popular
culture, fashion and current affairs
magazine. Vanity Fair is often read by
people who are very interested in
celebrities and celebrity gossip. Vanity Fair
is also well known for being the first
magazine to release lots of Kardashian
news. This means that it must have an
overall attractive appearance. The glossy
cover that has been used helps to create
this high end look. Even though for my
magazine I can’t use real magazine paper,
different effects and lighting can make it
appear of higher quality.
The cover image is a main focal point for the cover. The model has been airbrushed and her face may
have been retouched. For example, sometimes different models are edited in certain ways to fit in with
trends at the time. Like now for instance, larger and fuller lips are trending. This means that on
magazines models may be edited to have larger lips and seem more appealing to the target audience.
The Masthead for i-D magazine is placed
differently to others. It is written vertically
instead of horizontally. I think that this
makes it individual and stand out amongst
others. The masthead also stands out
more because it is in the colour yellow
which, against the other colours stands
out as vibrant and prevents the magazine
from appearing too dull or boring.
This issue of i-D’s colour palate consists of mostly dark colours. To some, this colour scheme may appear dull and boring or even have a depressive vibe to
it. However, this colour palate may fit in well with the time of year it was released in. For example, the dark blues and shaded background may be to fit in
with a winter issue. Whereas if this issue had been released in the summer, brighter and bolder colours for example pink may have been used to fit in.
The tag line is situated on the bottom left
corner of the cover. A tag line is a short
memorable line of cover text that sums up
the tone of the magazine. In this case, this
is a clever and well thought out tag line
because ‘loud’ is the name of one of
Rihanna ‘s ablums.
The image that has been used for the
background is of Rihanna, who clearly
features in this issue of i-D magazine. The
image is of her facing almost square to the
camera. From a readers point of view, this
makes it appear like she is looking at you.
One of her eyes is covered by her hair,
however this does not take away from the
effect of the image. I think it adds to a
‘shady’ sort of design making the reader
intrigued and want to buy the magazine.
I like the colour scheme that has been
used for Rihanna’s clothing in contrast to
the colour scheme as a whole . I think that
it makes the magazine appear to be more
fashionable and in trend therefore making
it more appealing to the audience.
Overall, this magazine has a slightly plain
and simplistic appearance. I think this
makes the magazine have a clearer and
nicer overall appearance. The magazine is
not too busy yet still uses enough content
to interest the reader to buy the
magazine.
There is a small tag line on the right hand
side of the magazine. This follows the Z
shape of the format because the reader
starts by looking at the i-D then looks
along to the right towards the tag line and
then down to the next tag line. This tag
line is in a smaller and less noticeable font
than the other tag line. This may be
because it will encourage the reader to
pick the magazine up to find out what it
says.
The cover image used in this issue of i-D
magazine would have to fit in with the
target audience to be appealing to them.
In this issue artist Riannah has been used.
She has been dressed and styled in a way
to fit the content of the magazine and the
style of music she produces.
There is a clear use of thirds in this issue
of i-D magazine. Magazines can be split up
into nine sections with three horizontal
and three vertical lines that intersect to
create the nine sections. The mast head is
situated in the top left third. The cover
image remains central. The main tag line is
in the bottom left third and the other tag
line is in the right side thirds.
An image has been used in this contents page
to keep the reader interested. If the page was
lots of words only it may appear boring and
dull. The image breaks up the words giving
this page an overall more attractive and
appealing look.
The word contents has been split up and isn't
all in a straight-line as one word. This makes
the magazine have an overall more attractive
and appealing appearance because it is
different. It isn't the same boring word
placement that every magazine has at the
beginning of the contents page. The
individuality of this writing style may indicate
that this magazine features more indie style
content. The word content is still however in
bold and in a contrasting colour to the
background to ensure that it is clear and
stands out. It is in a large font size again to
break up the wording on the page.
The different page numbers have been
categorised into fashion and features. Often
this is used by magazines to break up the
content of the page and make it easier for the
reader to find what they are looking for. The
text is in a contrasting colour to the
background to make it stand out and visible.
Some of the text is in different colours
because it is featured on the cover. Again, this
makes it easier for the reader to find what
pages they want to read.
This issue of the magazine has used a
simplistic grey scale colour scheme. Even
the model used in the image fits in with
the colour palate. This gives the page an
overall attractive appearance. The colour
scheme may also have followed on from
the cover so that the magazine has
colour consistency. This colour palate
may have been used to fit in with a
specific season or the content of the
magazine. This issue looks as if it was
from winter because the colours that
have been used are very dark and dull
like a winter scene would look like. The
only area of colour that doesn’t fit in
with the colour scheme is the models
legs. This draws the readers eye towards
her legs. In some magazines this may be
used if the image is of a celebrity
because it continues to keep the reader
interested.
The main image that has been used on
this page is of a woman with her legs in
the air wearing little clothing and high
heels. She is in a provocative pose which
may interest male audiences and keep
them reading the magazine. She is also
looking directly at the reader. Along with
the way she is styled, this makes her look
seductive again emphasising the interest
of the reader. It is also the only image on
the page. This may signify that it is of
significance and is relevant to the rest of
the content.
The masthead is the magazine title and then
the word contents. The magazine title is the
same style and colouring as seen on the
cover. This creates a brand for NME and
keeps flow and consistency throughout the
magazine. The word contents matches NME.
They are both in block capitals and bold
fonts. The colours that have been used
contrast the background and contrast each
other making the readers eye be drawn
towards it. The boldness this title gives off
may suggest something about the type of
music featured in this issue.
The main image has been used to keep the
reader interested and break up the rest of
the text to keep the reader interested in the
page. Often, magazines will use images of
popular artists or artists featured in that
issue to make readers aware of the content
in this edition. The image fits in well with
the colour scheme making it appealing and
attractive.
The colour palate of yellow, red, black and
white has been used for this page. All of
these colours complement her. The colour
red is often used to connote anger or
frustration. This further contrasts the colour
yellow which is often used to portray
happiness. These two colours used together
may suggest what content is in the
magazine. They suggest that there is a
variety. The use of primary colours against
dull colours like black and white create
contrast and makes specific parts of text
stand out more than others. For example,
the page number featuring the Arctic
Monkeys is in red. This makes it stand out
and makes it easier for the reader to find so
that when they open the magazine they can
just flick straight to that page.
All of the text is
written in block capitals. This keeps the
consistency of the page to create a
professional and clean appearance. There is
only one section of text that is not in block
capitals. This makes this section stand out
which may indicate that it is a main feature in
this issue of NME magazine.
There is some advertising that is situated at
the bottom of the page. The advert is placed
in this way so that it doesn’t overtake any of
the content relevant to what the reader
wants to read. The advert is placed at the
bottom of the page and underneath a
section of text that stands out more than it.
This is because it is less significant.
There is a small red box with information
about a gig guide on a specific page. This
may have been placed here because as the
reader turns the page, they may cast their
eyes down to look at the page turning and
see that.
There are two images on this cover page.
This breaks up the text for the reader
making the contents page as a whole
appear more interesting to read. The
images have relevance to the content of
this issue of the magazine. They may have
been used to get the readers attention to
want to read on further. One image is in
black and white. This makes it fit in well
with the colour scheme. The image may be
in this grey scale theme to make it appear
old. The image does not stand out so well
because it is in black and white. The other
image of Beyoncé is in colour which makes
it stand out more. This may have been why
the black and white image is larger so that it
still stands out. Both images also have
captions to give the reader a bit more
understanding of what they are of.
The colour scheme for this contents
page is simplistic. The colours black,
white, grey and pink have been used.
The pink contrasts the black and white
well making certain sections of the
page stand out. For example, the page
numbers. The reader would want to
see these easily so that they can easily
see the page that they want to get to.
The page numbers and their features are
listed on the left side of the page. Some
headings are in bold so that the reader
can find what they want to read easily.
Some page numbers are written larger
and in different places than the others to
make them stand out more. This may be
because they are more significant. For
example, both images on the page have
their own page numbers written largely in
bold so that the reader can easily see
where they are in the magazine. Small
explanations of what is on each page are
underneath titles. These give the reader a
bit of insight into what is on that
particular page. This should interest them
and make them want to read on to that
particular page.
Small versions of articles are written
underneath both images. These are
teaser articles. They are condensed
versions of the articles on the page
numbers that have been written to
interest the reader into reading the full
page.
All of the components on the page have
been placed in a specific way. They are
all in line with each other in columns
and rows. This makes the magazine
appear more clean and tidy. It gives it
an overall more professional
appearance.
Some sections of text are larger or
smaller than each other. For example,
the titles of articles are in larger fonts
than the articles underneath them. This
is because certain areas of text need to
stand out more than others in order to
interest the reader into reading the
articles. Complementary fonts have
also been used in the page. The same
font hasn’t been used throughout
because it would make the page appear
dull and boring. Instead, different styles
of font that complement each other
have been used to make certain things
stand out.
There is a large red L situated on the right page of the
double spread. This stands for Lady Gaga and backs up the
image of her in case readers were unaware of who she
was. The L takes up the entire page and is in a bold font
that contrasts the rest of the article to make it stand out
even more. The red L also helps the rest of the article be
broken up a little. The reader will remain interested
because they aren’t just reading the same style text.
The main image is of
Lady Gaga because that
is who the article is
about. The image
attracts the reader,
particularly fans of Lady
gaga and interests them
so that they will read the
full article. The image
has been edited to
appear black and white
or have a greyscale
effect. This makes it fit in
with the colour scheme
of the article but still
stand out against the red
L on the other page. The
black and white image
makes her appear classy
and gives the magazine a
professional appearance.
In the image, Lady Gaga
is wearing little clothing
so is hiding herself with
her hands. She is also
staring straight at the
camera so it appears like
she is looking at the
reader. She also has a
seductive look on her
face. This interests the
reader more so that they
want to read the rest of
the article. It also fits
well with lady gagas own
appearance as she is
often seen wearing
obscure outfits.
The article also features
two drop caps. They
have been used to
denote the reader to
where the article begins.
It is in a different colour
to the rest of the article
text and also in a
different font size to the
rest of the text. This
further makes it stand
out therefore making it
easy for the reader to
see where the article
begins. They also help to
break the text up a little.
The article text is set out
in columns. This makes it
easier and more
appealing for the reader
to read. If it were all in
one paragraph it may
seem like a lot of text to
read at once
This article was taken from Q magazine. At the bottom of
the page there is a small Q logo. It is only small because it
isn’t that significant however it is there because it makes
the magazine look professional. It also keeps consistency
within the pages so that the magazine flows nicely. The Q
fits in well with the colour scheme also so it doesn’t look
like it sticks out but its still noticeable.
A very commonly used colour scheme has been used for this
double page spread. The colours black, white, grey and red have
been used. These colours are often used by the fashion industry,
in particular Christian Louboutin. This keeps the magazine looking
up to date and in fashion. The colours complement each other
well so that the different components stand out from each other
and more important areas appear more visible.
This article was taken from Q magazine. At the bottom of the
page there is a small Q logo. It is only small because it isn’t that
significant however it is there because it makes the magazine look
professional. It also keeps consistency within the pages so that
the magazine flows nicely. The Q fits in well with the colour
scheme also so it doesn’t look like it sticks out but its still
noticeable.
The colour palate for this
double page spread
consists of pink, purple,
white and grey. These
colours all complement
each other well so that
different components of
the article will stand out.
For example the white
mast head on the pink
background stands out
well so that it can be
easily read and seen. The
colour scheme creates a
girly kind of look. This is
a good thing because it
relates to the target
market well as most of
them will be girls.
The mast head of the pages is in a bold large font. This
makes it stand out against the rest of the page so it is clear
what the article is about. The masthead is in a typical place
that is expected. This makes it easily viewable for the
reader. Different fonts have been used for the different
words because they have different meanings. The word
fierce is written in bold because it is quite a bold word
whereas the word creative is in a more individual font to
represent the word.
The main image on these
pages is of Beyonce. This
lets the reader know
what the article is about
and interests them into
reading it if they aren’t
already aware that it is
about her. The image has
been edited. Beyonces
skin may have been
airbrushed to make it
appear more flawless.
Certain areas of her
make up may also have
been darkened or
lightened to make
certain features of her
face stand out or blend
in more. Beyonces skin
also has a glow to it. This
further makes the image
stand out especially from
the gray background.
The vibrant glow of her
skin contrasts the dull
grey of the background.
The image has a small
caption of ‘woman of the
year’ the caption gives
the reader a slight insight
into what the article is
about however doesn’t
say enough to give
anything away. This
interests the reader
making them want to
caption is written in
white to stand out from
the background
The text on the article
has been split into two
columns. This makes it
easier to read and more
appealing to read. If all
of the writing was in one
large paragraph or
section it may seem like
too much and the reader
might want to just skip
through it.
The text on the article is
started by subheadings.
This makes the reader
aware of what that
section of text is going to
be about so that they
can choose which part to
read first and which bit
to read last.
All of the fonts that have been used in the double page spread for
headings, subheadings and text are in bold fonts. This makes
them stand out from the rest of the page. These styles of font
may have been used because Beyonce is a very influential artist
that is very highly regarded in the music industry. Her image and
personality may be described as bold which may suggest why the
bold font has been used. The fonts reflect that the article is about
Beyonce.
The journalist that has written the article’s name is shown above the
main text in a medium sized bold font. Her name stands out enough to
be seen by the reader but not enough that it takes away the attention
from the article itself. Some readers like to read certain articles by
specific journalists because they write in a certain way or because they
are always truthful etc. by having the journalists name at the top of
the article, the reader is made aware of who wrote it and what
magazine they work for therefore meaning the reader may want to
read their work again, reading that magazine again.
The mast head of the pages is in a bold large font. This
makes it stand out against the rest of the page so it is
clear what the article is about. Nicki’s name clearly
stands out because it is one of the most significant
things on the page. It is likely that the reader will be
interested in her music therefore will want to know
that this page is about her. The masthead uses the
word ‘gospel’ which suggests that Nicki Minaj is holy or
like a god which to some crazed fans she may be.
The text on the pages is
split into sections. If all
the writing was together
in one large paragraph or
section, it would appear
boring and be tedious for
the audience to read. So,
to keep it interesting,
sections with
subheadings are used.
The subheadings also
make it easy for the
reader to pick and
choose which parts of
the article to read first.
All of the text is in black.
This colour contrasts the
pink background so that
it stands out but it isn’t
in a vibrant colour like
pink because it is a less
significant part of the
page.
The main image for the article is of Nicki Minaj. This lets the reader
know that the article is about her and catches their eye so that they
will read it. The image has been placed in the centre of the page so
that all the text surrounds her framing her. This further entices the
readers interest in the article as it suggests it all around her. She has
been dressed in a specific way. More often than not, Nicki can be seen
in vibrant outfits that stand out from others. Her own image is
reflected in the image on the page because she is wearing a more
obscure and individual outfit.
The colour palate for this
double page spread is
mostly pinks, black and
white. The pink fits well
with an article that is all
about Nicki Minaj. This is
a colour that may be
associated with her. She
will often wear a pink
lipstick and even one of
her albums is called ‘pink
Friday’. The colours all
work well together
because even though
black may seem like a
more boring and dull
colour, it is a good
contrast to the pink. The
pinks make the page
stand out because they
are very vibrant. I like
the use of different
shades of pink within the
pages. I think that it
creates an overall
attractive appearance
because they all blend
together enough to look
good but contrast each
other enough to see
important parts of text.
There is a quote positioned in the bottom right corner
of the pages. The quote is called a pull quote. It is a
quote from the interview with Nicki that has been used
to get the readers attention to interest them into
reading the rest of the article. The quote reveals some
information about what Nicki has said in the article but
not everything. It is just enough so that the reader
wants to read on, but doesn’t know the full story just
from reading that line.
There is some negative space at the top of
the article. Negative space is an area
without text or an image. Negative space
can help keep the reader interested and
the article looking clean This space keeps
the simplistic look of the article and
prevents it from appearing too busy. If the
article did appear too busy, it may put
readers off.
A drop cap has been
used at the beginning of
the article. It has been
used to denote the
reader to where the
article begins. It is in a
different colour to the
rest of the article text
and also in a different
font size to the rest of
the text. This further
makes it stand out
therefore making it easy
for the reader to see
where the article begins.
This palate is mostly blues and blacks. Whilst blue can connote sadness, I
think it can also relate to something hidden or a secret. This colour scheme
may be used for a tag line or teaser to interest the reader into reading
more.
This palate is all purple. Purple can also connote sadness however, I think
it is a good winter colour, which is when my magazine has been designed,
and it complements many other colours meaning it would look good in
amongst a large page such as a double page spread.
This palate is a greyscale. The use of whites and blacks can be good
especially in a more colourful palate. They keep the text from looking to
busy or harsh to look at. These colours also create a classy appearance
making my magazine look professional and well done
This is another example of a blue palate. I have chosen this palate because
I think it Is important that a magazine fits in with fashion and style. These
darker colours fit in well with winter, which is when my magazine is being
designed.
This colour scheme uses all blues and greys. It is a bit lighter than the
others giving it a more ‘happy’ vibe. The grey and the blue contrast each
other well however to still keep it in season but keep a good balance of
colour.
This is another example of lighter palate using pinks. The pinks are more
….. Which keeps them from looking tacky. Pink is a good colour to use in a
womens magazine if it is used correctly. Too much pink can make the
magazine look like a tween gossip read.
This palate is a mix of grey’s purples and pinks. It would be good for a
more serious article. It looks very classy and would give a very professional
impression for my magazine however it may look a little boring for some
content.
This is example of a commonly used colour scheme. The red, black and
white is a classic Louboutin palate. This is why I like the use of greys and
blues. They bring an updated edge to the original but still keep it classy
and professional.
These colours do not go together as well as some of the others. The blues
contrast well with the black to make components stand out well. However,
the tan colour may look strange next to an image of a person and doesn’t
complement the use of an off white.
Here are
examples of
fonts I have
chosen as
possible fonts
for my
magazine.
They are all
bold and in
block capitals.
I like that
they are all
very bold
because I
think that it
makes a
statement. It
can make
your
magazine
stand out
from the rest
by being
‘bold’ itself.
The bold
fonts also
provide a
clean and
minimalistic
effects. I like
the square
look of the
fonts which is
why I like the
way these
fonts prevent
ascenders
and
descenders
taking up too
much space.
This font is very square. it doesn’t take up much room and may look good as a drop cap for an article.
I like that this font takes up a lot of room because it makes it stand out more. It could be used for a
masthead or heading.
This font is an ‘in-between’ font. It neither takes up too much or too little space. It is neither too bold or
not bold enough however I think this is what makes it a slightly boring font that readers may find
tedious to read.
The squareness of this font doesn’t appeal to me as much because it is too bold making it look chunky.
This font is one of my favourites. it is bold without being chunky but still takes up lots of space. It would
be good for a masthead.
This font may look good as a heading or subheading it doesn’t stand out too much but it is still appealing
on the eye.
This font is very square. it doesn’t take up much room and may look good as a drop cap for an article.
This font is bold and square but still feministic. It could be used for an article aimed at women.
Again, The squareness of this font doesn’t appeal to me as much because it is too bold making it look
chunky.
This font carries a lot of strength. It would be good to catch the readers eye on the contents page.
I like the way this font is stretched. It makes it appear thinner and attracts the readers eye more than
the others. This would be a good font for a teaser quote.
I like the way this font looks classical. It looks like calligraphy but with cleaner modern lines which would
give my magazine a more classy appearance.
This font is also one of my favorites. It is bold and large without being chunky. I like the way the letters
are spaced out also because it takes up more room and with my magazine title only being one letter it
will suit well.
NME magazine uses a very bold title. The magazine always uses a red
background with white letters. This creates a brand for the magazine making
it easily recognisable for the audience. NME uses a very square and sharp
title. This makes it stand out and catch the readers eye and attention. Whilst
the colour scheme for NME’s title complements and contrasts, the font
makes the letters appear too chunky and masculine.
i-D uses an only black title. I think that the black works well because it can be
used on almost any cover image and still standout without clashing with its
colours. I also like the way only one of the letters is in capital. The i isn’t an
ascender or descender so it stays square with the D but it doesn’t look as
harsh as if they were both capitals. The title is also always placed vertically
instead of horizontally. I think this gives i-D magazine a unique design
therefore making it stand out from the others.
Billboard use a longer and less bold title but this is compensated for by the
use of ascenders to use up more space making the title stand out. The font
isn’t too harsh but it is very rounded which can sometimes look slightly out if
the rest of the page is very square. The main colour of Billboard contrasts
others well without clashing meaning multiple images can be used. The use
of primary colour stand out against the black well and complement each
other also.
Clash magazine use a bolder and more square title. The black works well
because it can be used on almost any cover image and still standout without
clashing with its colours. Clash’s title font stands out next to the others
because it is bold without being too chunky.
Q magazine use a simple one letter title. I like this idea as I think it brings
simplicity to the magazine. The Q on its own can be too small sometimes so
it is important to remember to have It at a good size where it will catch the
attention of the reader well. Q magazine use a common colour scheme of
red and white. Whilst this colour scheme does often work well by
contrasting other colours, it is too often used. This means it does not stand
out against other magazine titles meaning it wont catch the readers eye as
well.
Other
Magazine
Titles
Here are some titles from my favourite
magazines. They aren’t music magazines they
predominantly feature women's fashion.
However, I think its important for a magazine
to be updated and in fashion to seem
appealing to its audience. I will take some
inspiration from fashion magazines to help
create my magazine because my target
audience would also read and be very
interested in current fashion trends therefore
making it even more important to be in.
All of the titles listed have some things in
common that I think I could also adopt for my
magazine. All of the magazines use block
capitals for their titles. I think this is because
it stands out more against others and keeps a
square and bold look for the magazine. It it
easier to keep consistency and flow if all or
most of the components are of the same
shape. For example if a rounded font was
used, a square image may not fit so well. The
titles are all also in black. This Is because
black complements most colours so it will still
look clean and tidy on the cover of the mag.
My
Magazine
Title
I have taken inspiration from V magazine for my magazine
title. I like the simplicity of a one letter title as I think it will add
to my minimalistic magazine appearance. The A will not be in
this font however I think it is a good representation of the
style of font it will be in. I wont have a glow effect on it either.
The lines will be very defined. I would like to have the A
translucent so that the background can be seen underneath it.
I took this idea from V magazine also. I think this magazine
title will make my magazine unique and stand out from others.

This double page spread consists of an interview with Nicki
MInaj. The title begins with ‘The Gospel acording to Nicki
Minaj’. This implies that she is God like making her extremely
significant. Some of her music also refers to her being a ‘God’
or a ‘Queen’ so this title appropriately links in. This theme is
continued throughout the interview as the subheading of the
article begins with ‘Bow down mortals’ implying that Nicki is
immortal giving her special qualities. Again the use of ‘Queen’
can be seen in the subheading. ‘Queen of Hip Hop stands
before you’ This emphasises her importance suggesting she is
greatly influential in the music industry.
The target audience has clearly been considered as the
interview remains mostly informal. Whilst the interview itself
may have been a more formal event. The way it is written in
the magazine article it similar to that of a conversation. This is
done because the reader will be more interested. Nicki’s
thoughts and feelings were discussed. ‘I felt like I didn’t need
to do it anymore’. Again, meaning that the reader could
remain interested.

Here is an example of an interview, taken from the Clash
website, that Clash Magazine conducted with Jay Z. The
interview begins by the interviewer asking Jay Z how he is. This
starts the interview off as informal. The interview remains
informal as the interviewer asks Jay Z questions about his
personal life. This style of interviewing is more interesting for
a reader to read through. It appears more relaxed and casual
which is how the audience would normally speak.
This interview is similar to the Nicki Minaj interview. I think
this style of writing and interviewing will be best for my
magazine.

David LaChapelle
David LaChapelle is an American commercial photographer and artist. He is known for is individual photographic style that has been described as
‘hyper-real and slyly subversive’. Personally, I think his work stands out because it often portrays social messages without being cliché. When
LaChapelle was 17 years old, he met Andy Warhol, who offered him his first job as a photographer at Interview Magazine. His photographs of
celebrities in Interview garnered positive attention, and before long he was shooting for a variety of top editorial publications. LaChapelle’s images
subsequently appeared on the covers of pages including i-D, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Face, Vanity Fair, Vogue Italia and
Vogue Paris. David LaChapelle, I think, is a relevant photographer to research for my magazine. I am hoping to cross fashion with music to create a
unique magazine that appeals to a wider target audience. LaChapelle has worked with both the music and fashion industry nicely setting him as a good
base for some of my images. Some of his work can be more extreme and explicit. LaChapelle regularly features nude models and over sexualised
portrayals in his work however I think I can take some ideas and adapt them to suit my magazine well. One my favourite pieces of his work was the
2013 Kardashian Christmas card. He managed to cross a modern and post-appocalyptic theme with Christmas to create a stunning photo perfect for a
Kardashian image.

Helmut Newton
Helmut Newton was a German- Australian photographer. He was described as a ‘prolific and widely imitated fashion photographer whose
provocative, erotically charged black and white photos were a mainstay of Vogue.’ Newton was Interested in photography from the age of 12, when
he purchased his first camera and worked for the German photographer Elsie Neulander Simon. In 1946, Newton set up a studio in
fashionable Flinders Lane in Melbourne and worked on fashion and theatre photography in the affluent post-war years. Newton's growing reputation
as a fashion photographer was rewarded when he secured a commission to illustrate fashions in a special Australian supplement for Vogue magazine,
published in January 1956. He won a 12-month contract with British Vogue and left for London in February 1957. He returned to Melbourne in March
1959 to a contract for Australian Vogue. Newton settled in Paris in 1961 and continued to work as a fashion photographer. His images appeared in
magazines including the French edition of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. I think Newton’s work has been very influential over the years. His provocative
black and white images are frequently used in the modern day and often seen on a ‘classic’ vogue cover. His work will be good examples to take
inspiration from as he worked predominantly in fashion which will have a great influence on my magazine.

Alexey Brodovitch
Alexey Brodovitch was a photographer and designer who was most famous for his art direction of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar from 1934 to
1958. Brodovitch began designing after moving to Paris to become an artist. On nights and weekends away from the Ballets Russes, Brodovitch began
sketching designs for textiles, china, and jewelry. By the time his work for the ballet had finished, he had already compiled an extensive portfolio of
these side projects and was selling his designs to fashionable shops. He worked part-time doing layouts for Caheirs de art, an important art journal,
and Arts et Métiers Graphiques, an influential design magazine. He gained public recognition for his work in the commercial arts by winning first prize
in a poster competition for an artists' soiree called Le Bal Banal on March 24, 1924. n spring of 1934, the Art Directors Club of New York asked
Brodovitch to design their "13th Annual Art Directors Exhibition" at the Rockfeller Centre, New York. It was there that Carmel Snow, the recently
appointed editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar, saw Brodovitch's work for the first time. She knew right away that Brodovitch would be the one to
transform the magazine into a real revival of Vogue, where she had started her career. To those who worked with him at Bazaar, the pinnacle of
Brodovitch's career as a designer was the unfailing elegance of his pages. This elegance, combined with an element of innovation was the ideal mix for
a fashion magazine. I think I will be able to take inspiration from Brodovitch’s work. His designs are ‘perfect for a fashion magazine’. If I combined
these designs with music content I could get a good cross over between the two to meet my target audience.

Republic LTD
Music Republic LTD are a distribution and design company that was founded in January 2007. The company offers ‘a new and exciting alternative to the
existing independent music sales and distribution companies in the UK and Europe.’ They take a more diverse and ‘cutting edge’ approach towards the
music industry bringing individuality and unique style. The company has worked with retail campaigns for numerous artists including; Fleet Foxes, Two
Door Cinema Club, You me at Six, Neneh Cherry, Slim, Freemasons, The Cribs, Lambchop, Mazzy Star, Gold Panda, Caribou and Beach House. Republic of
music offers flexible and dynamic deals for both physical and digital distribution for its customers.
I think that Music Republic LTD would be a suitable publishers for my magazine. They appear to take a ‘new’ and modern approach to distributing the
magazines and I think that my target audience would take to this well. I like that the company distribute both digitally and physically. I think that in some
ways the magazine industry is being taken over by digital advances. So, if my magazine were to be distributed both physically and digitally It has more
chance of being more successful. I’m not sure that all of the artists listed that Music Republic LTD have worked with fit in with my style of magazine.

more than 164 million consumers across its 20 print digital media brands including: Allure, Architechural Digest, Ars Techina, Bon Apetit, Brides,
Glamour, Gold World, GQ, The New Yorker, Self, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Wired. The company was founded in 1909 by Conde Montrose
Nast and has been owned and operated by the Newhouse family since 1959.
Conde Nast are publishers and distributors for Vogue Magazine. For my magazine, I have chosen to take inspiration from fashion magazines like vogue. I
think this publishers have a well branded fashion section as they also publish for other high end fashion magazines including Teen Vogue and Vanity Fair.
Conde Nast also have a well established web page where the magazines that they publish can be advertised. I like this because it means my magazine
would be advertised amongst others that are highly regarded and respected. I think my magazine would also fit in well with the style of magazines that
this publishing company distributes.

  • 2. Here are examples of magazines that appeal to me. They are mostly fashion magazines however their colour schemes and layouts appeal to me also. I like the way V- magazine always has its mast head in the centre of the cover in large bold font. Not many magazines are designed in this way so, I think it adds to its individual style and makes it stand out from the others. Most of the magazines above have a simple and plain design. There is little text or complex images on them. I also like this design as it appears to be clean and tidy. There are also some magazines with a more complex design. For example Vanity Fair. These styles of magazine are busier and have more complex images and text. I also like the colour schemes for the magazines above. Some follow a commonly used colour scheme of white red and black that is used mostly in the fashion industry particularly by designer Christian Loboutin. Most of the magazines also have bold mastheads. I like the bold fonts that are used for example in vogue magazine or in V magazine because they look clean and tidy. MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
  • 3. Here are examples of magazines that appeal to me. They are all music magazines some from the same magazine. The magazines NME, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Clash and Vibe all feature here. I haven’t just picked these magazines to use as examples because of the music that they feature or the artists on the cover. I like the colour schemes and layouts of them also. For example Clash magazine adopts a very simplistic and minimalistic design for the front cover. I like this because it appears neat and clean. Some of these colour palates appeal to me and could possibly be used in my magazine. Many of them fit in with seasons. For example the Billboard cover featuring Beyonce uses pinks and yellows. This would suggest that this issue of Billboard was released in the summer time because these are colours that are often associated with the summer time. Whereas the example of Billboard situated at the top second in from the right would be a good colour palate for a winter edition because it uses darker and deeper colours. I think that MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
  • 4. These are two main examples of magazines that I like. V magazine is an American fashion magazine that has been published since 1999. The magazine is printed seasonally and highlights trends in fashion, film, music and art. i-D magazine is a British magazine that is dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980. I would like to take inspiration and ideas from both these magazines for my magazine. I like the simple minimalistic appearance of them both because I think it keeps the covers looking clean and tidy. I like the way V magazine always has its masthead in the centre of the cover, covering images and text. I think this makes the V seem important and it stands out from other magazines who usually have their mast heads in the top left corner. I think the way i-D always has a tag line in the same place creates a similar effect. It creates a brand for the magazine that fans and readers can look out for. I also think it emphasises what the tag line says. If it is one of the only pieces of text on the cover then the readers eye is immediately drawn to it. MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
  • 5. V magazine is one of the few magazines that do not have the mast head at the top of the page. Instead, V magazine has its masthead in the centre of the page taking up more space. This makes the magazine different from others; it stands out as individual. Although the letter V is transparent to blend with the background image, it remains bold and noticeable because of the distinct placement acting as the centre of visual interest. The colour palate below is taken from the cover page. The four main colours that have been used contrast each other in pairs. Black and white have both been used for each model. Black and white are commonly used in contrast to each other throughout the fashion industry. This helps the magazine to appeal to its target audience and appear to be in with trends. Secondly, the colours green and blue have been used. These two colours, when used together connote earth. This then contrasts the two models who are wearing little clothing portraying a sexual ora for the magazine. These colours may also have been used to fit in with the season that the magazine was released in. Overall, V magazine has a very plain and quiet design. There is little text and even though the cover lines are in bold text and contrasting colours there are no ascenders or descenders to take up more space. The overall design does not follow a typical F, H or Z format however I think this contributes to V magazines individual style. The cover lines usually relate to the image and V magazine follows this. The models names are written in the largest font in the centre of the text to appear the most significant and attract the target market. Here, the issue number of the magazine is shown. It lets us know which edition the magazine is from. This number is in a smaller font to the masthead because it is less significant. V magazine is a women’s fashion magazine. This the image shown on the cover would relate to a woman interested in fashion because it is of two women who appear to be wearing abstract and bold clothes. Their outfits contrast from each other (black and white) further making them stand out. This issue of V magazine has a clean and minimalistic design. This design is followed throughout many V magazine issues. This creates a brand for the magazine and makes it more easily recognisable for the target audience The image used on the cover of this edition of V magazine is of the two models. They are wearing clothing that appears to be from high end fashion and make up that is in trend but also stands out enough to be noticed. This makes the magazine more appealing to its target audience. V magazine always uses the same style of masthead. I like this because I think it creates a brand for the magazine and makes it easily recognisable for its readers and audience. I think it makes it stand out from others. I would like to take inspiration from V magazine in my magazine and use one large letter that takes up a lot of room but doesn’t hide any images or text. The V in V magazine is functional but still fashionable.
  • 6. The colour palate below is taken from the cover page. This magazine uses a classic colour scheme, commonly used within the fashion industry; black white and red. Typically, the colour red is used to connote anger however, I believe in this instance the colour red has been used as a contrast colour to black and white. This issue of Vanity Fair follows the typical Z formation of a magazine which follows the shape of the letter z. Readers will start in the top/left, move horizontally to the top/right and then diagonally to the bottom/right before finishing with another horizontal movement to the bottom/right. The z-pattern is good for simple designs with a few key elements that need to be seen. The Masthead for Vanity Fair is in a large capital font. It is also in a bold colour from the palate. This makes it stand out from the background image to appear to be the most significant part of the page. The masthead is also positioned at the top of the Z where the reader is expected to see it. The price of the magazine can be seen in a smaller font underneath the masthead. The price of the magazine is written in a smaller size font and in a less bold colour than the masthead because it is less significant than the masthead but important enough to be shown No barcode can be seen on the front cover of Vanity Fair. This may be because the barcode is on the back of the magazine to make more room for the content of the cover The image shown in the background fits with the colour scheme to keep flow in the magazine cover. The image has been cropped so we can see a close up version of the original. This may be because it appears to be more intimate and bold therefore making it appeal to the target audience more. This issue of Vanity Fair is foreign so the girl on the cover has no relation to me however in Spain, where this issue was released, the girl may be of interest attracting the target audience further. This issue of the magazine features large tag lines and text across the front of the page. The tag lines have been placed to fit in with the Z style design which is made to suit where the reader casts their eyes. The main tag line is in bold and a contrasting colour to the background. This makes it stand out against the rest and draws the readers eye to interest them therefore making them want to buy the magazine. Vanity Fair is a highly regarded popular culture, fashion and current affairs magazine. Vanity Fair is often read by people who are very interested in celebrities and celebrity gossip. Vanity Fair is also well known for being the first magazine to release lots of Kardashian news. This means that it must have an overall attractive appearance. The glossy cover that has been used helps to create this high end look. Even though for my magazine I can’t use real magazine paper, different effects and lighting can make it appear of higher quality. The cover image is a main focal point for the cover. The model has been airbrushed and her face may have been retouched. For example, sometimes different models are edited in certain ways to fit in with trends at the time. Like now for instance, larger and fuller lips are trending. This means that on magazines models may be edited to have larger lips and seem more appealing to the target audience.
  • 7. The Masthead for i-D magazine is placed differently to others. It is written vertically instead of horizontally. I think that this makes it individual and stand out amongst others. The masthead also stands out more because it is in the colour yellow which, against the other colours stands out as vibrant and prevents the magazine from appearing too dull or boring. This issue of i-D’s colour palate consists of mostly dark colours. To some, this colour scheme may appear dull and boring or even have a depressive vibe to it. However, this colour palate may fit in well with the time of year it was released in. For example, the dark blues and shaded background may be to fit in with a winter issue. Whereas if this issue had been released in the summer, brighter and bolder colours for example pink may have been used to fit in. The tag line is situated on the bottom left corner of the cover. A tag line is a short memorable line of cover text that sums up the tone of the magazine. In this case, this is a clever and well thought out tag line because ‘loud’ is the name of one of Rihanna ‘s ablums. The image that has been used for the background is of Rihanna, who clearly features in this issue of i-D magazine. The image is of her facing almost square to the camera. From a readers point of view, this makes it appear like she is looking at you. One of her eyes is covered by her hair, however this does not take away from the effect of the image. I think it adds to a ‘shady’ sort of design making the reader intrigued and want to buy the magazine. I like the colour scheme that has been used for Rihanna’s clothing in contrast to the colour scheme as a whole . I think that it makes the magazine appear to be more fashionable and in trend therefore making it more appealing to the audience. Overall, this magazine has a slightly plain and simplistic appearance. I think this makes the magazine have a clearer and nicer overall appearance. The magazine is not too busy yet still uses enough content to interest the reader to buy the magazine. There is a small tag line on the right hand side of the magazine. This follows the Z shape of the format because the reader starts by looking at the i-D then looks along to the right towards the tag line and then down to the next tag line. This tag line is in a smaller and less noticeable font than the other tag line. This may be because it will encourage the reader to pick the magazine up to find out what it says. The cover image used in this issue of i-D magazine would have to fit in with the target audience to be appealing to them. In this issue artist Riannah has been used. She has been dressed and styled in a way to fit the content of the magazine and the style of music she produces. There is a clear use of thirds in this issue of i-D magazine. Magazines can be split up into nine sections with three horizontal and three vertical lines that intersect to create the nine sections. The mast head is situated in the top left third. The cover image remains central. The main tag line is in the bottom left third and the other tag line is in the right side thirds.
  • 8. An image has been used in this contents page to keep the reader interested. If the page was lots of words only it may appear boring and dull. The image breaks up the words giving this page an overall more attractive and appealing look. The word contents has been split up and isn't all in a straight-line as one word. This makes the magazine have an overall more attractive and appealing appearance because it is different. It isn't the same boring word placement that every magazine has at the beginning of the contents page. The individuality of this writing style may indicate that this magazine features more indie style content. The word content is still however in bold and in a contrasting colour to the background to ensure that it is clear and stands out. It is in a large font size again to break up the wording on the page. The different page numbers have been categorised into fashion and features. Often this is used by magazines to break up the content of the page and make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for. The text is in a contrasting colour to the background to make it stand out and visible. Some of the text is in different colours because it is featured on the cover. Again, this makes it easier for the reader to find what pages they want to read. This issue of the magazine has used a simplistic grey scale colour scheme. Even the model used in the image fits in with the colour palate. This gives the page an overall attractive appearance. The colour scheme may also have followed on from the cover so that the magazine has colour consistency. This colour palate may have been used to fit in with a specific season or the content of the magazine. This issue looks as if it was from winter because the colours that have been used are very dark and dull like a winter scene would look like. The only area of colour that doesn’t fit in with the colour scheme is the models legs. This draws the readers eye towards her legs. In some magazines this may be used if the image is of a celebrity because it continues to keep the reader interested. The main image that has been used on this page is of a woman with her legs in the air wearing little clothing and high heels. She is in a provocative pose which may interest male audiences and keep them reading the magazine. She is also looking directly at the reader. Along with the way she is styled, this makes her look seductive again emphasising the interest of the reader. It is also the only image on the page. This may signify that it is of significance and is relevant to the rest of the content.
  • 9. The masthead is the magazine title and then the word contents. The magazine title is the same style and colouring as seen on the cover. This creates a brand for NME and keeps flow and consistency throughout the magazine. The word contents matches NME. They are both in block capitals and bold fonts. The colours that have been used contrast the background and contrast each other making the readers eye be drawn towards it. The boldness this title gives off may suggest something about the type of music featured in this issue. The main image has been used to keep the reader interested and break up the rest of the text to keep the reader interested in the page. Often, magazines will use images of popular artists or artists featured in that issue to make readers aware of the content in this edition. The image fits in well with the colour scheme making it appealing and attractive. The colour palate of yellow, red, black and white has been used for this page. All of these colours complement her. The colour red is often used to connote anger or frustration. This further contrasts the colour yellow which is often used to portray happiness. These two colours used together may suggest what content is in the magazine. They suggest that there is a variety. The use of primary colours against dull colours like black and white create contrast and makes specific parts of text stand out more than others. For example, the page number featuring the Arctic Monkeys is in red. This makes it stand out and makes it easier for the reader to find so that when they open the magazine they can just flick straight to that page. All of the text is written in block capitals. This keeps the consistency of the page to create a professional and clean appearance. There is only one section of text that is not in block capitals. This makes this section stand out which may indicate that it is a main feature in this issue of NME magazine. There is some advertising that is situated at the bottom of the page. The advert is placed in this way so that it doesn’t overtake any of the content relevant to what the reader wants to read. The advert is placed at the bottom of the page and underneath a section of text that stands out more than it. This is because it is less significant. There is a small red box with information about a gig guide on a specific page. This may have been placed here because as the reader turns the page, they may cast their eyes down to look at the page turning and see that.
  • 10. There are two images on this cover page. This breaks up the text for the reader making the contents page as a whole appear more interesting to read. The images have relevance to the content of this issue of the magazine. They may have been used to get the readers attention to want to read on further. One image is in black and white. This makes it fit in well with the colour scheme. The image may be in this grey scale theme to make it appear old. The image does not stand out so well because it is in black and white. The other image of Beyoncé is in colour which makes it stand out more. This may have been why the black and white image is larger so that it still stands out. Both images also have captions to give the reader a bit more understanding of what they are of. The colour scheme for this contents page is simplistic. The colours black, white, grey and pink have been used. The pink contrasts the black and white well making certain sections of the page stand out. For example, the page numbers. The reader would want to see these easily so that they can easily see the page that they want to get to. The page numbers and their features are listed on the left side of the page. Some headings are in bold so that the reader can find what they want to read easily. Some page numbers are written larger and in different places than the others to make them stand out more. This may be because they are more significant. For example, both images on the page have their own page numbers written largely in bold so that the reader can easily see where they are in the magazine. Small explanations of what is on each page are underneath titles. These give the reader a bit of insight into what is on that particular page. This should interest them and make them want to read on to that particular page. Small versions of articles are written underneath both images. These are teaser articles. They are condensed versions of the articles on the page numbers that have been written to interest the reader into reading the full page. All of the components on the page have been placed in a specific way. They are all in line with each other in columns and rows. This makes the magazine appear more clean and tidy. It gives it an overall more professional appearance. Some sections of text are larger or smaller than each other. For example, the titles of articles are in larger fonts than the articles underneath them. This is because certain areas of text need to stand out more than others in order to interest the reader into reading the articles. Complementary fonts have also been used in the page. The same font hasn’t been used throughout because it would make the page appear dull and boring. Instead, different styles of font that complement each other have been used to make certain things stand out.
  • 11. There is a large red L situated on the right page of the double spread. This stands for Lady Gaga and backs up the image of her in case readers were unaware of who she was. The L takes up the entire page and is in a bold font that contrasts the rest of the article to make it stand out even more. The red L also helps the rest of the article be broken up a little. The reader will remain interested because they aren’t just reading the same style text. The main image is of Lady Gaga because that is who the article is about. The image attracts the reader, particularly fans of Lady gaga and interests them so that they will read the full article. The image has been edited to appear black and white or have a greyscale effect. This makes it fit in with the colour scheme of the article but still stand out against the red L on the other page. The black and white image makes her appear classy and gives the magazine a professional appearance. In the image, Lady Gaga is wearing little clothing so is hiding herself with her hands. She is also staring straight at the camera so it appears like she is looking at the reader. She also has a seductive look on her face. This interests the reader more so that they want to read the rest of the article. It also fits well with lady gagas own appearance as she is often seen wearing obscure outfits. The article also features two drop caps. They have been used to denote the reader to where the article begins. It is in a different colour to the rest of the article text and also in a different font size to the rest of the text. This further makes it stand out therefore making it easy for the reader to see where the article begins. They also help to break the text up a little. The article text is set out in columns. This makes it easier and more appealing for the reader to read. If it were all in one paragraph it may seem like a lot of text to read at once This article was taken from Q magazine. At the bottom of the page there is a small Q logo. It is only small because it isn’t that significant however it is there because it makes the magazine look professional. It also keeps consistency within the pages so that the magazine flows nicely. The Q fits in well with the colour scheme also so it doesn’t look like it sticks out but its still noticeable. A very commonly used colour scheme has been used for this double page spread. The colours black, white, grey and red have been used. These colours are often used by the fashion industry, in particular Christian Louboutin. This keeps the magazine looking up to date and in fashion. The colours complement each other well so that the different components stand out from each other and more important areas appear more visible. This article was taken from Q magazine.
  • 12. The colour palate for this double page spread consists of pink, purple, white and grey. These colours all complement each other well so that different components of the article will stand out. For example the white mast head on the pink background stands out well so that it can be easily read and seen. The colour scheme creates a girly kind of look. This is a good thing because it relates to the target market well as most of them will be girls. The mast head of the pages is in a bold large font. This makes it stand out against the rest of the page so it is clear what the article is about. The masthead is in a typical place that is expected. This makes it easily viewable for the reader. Different fonts have been used for the different words because they have different meanings. The word fierce is written in bold because it is quite a bold word whereas the word creative is in a more individual font to represent the word. The main image on these pages is of Beyonce. This lets the reader know what the article is about and interests them into reading it if they aren’t already aware that it is about her. The image has been edited. Beyonces skin may have been airbrushed to make it appear more flawless. Certain areas of her make up may also have been darkened or lightened to make certain features of her face stand out or blend in more. Beyonces skin also has a glow to it. This further makes the image stand out especially from the gray background. The vibrant glow of her skin contrasts the dull grey of the background. The image has a small caption of ‘woman of the year’ the caption gives the reader a slight insight into what the article is about however doesn’t say enough to give anything away. This interests the reader making them want to read the full article. The caption is written in white to stand out from the background The text on the article has been split into two columns. This makes it easier to read and more appealing to read. If all of the writing was in one large paragraph or section it may seem like too much and the reader might want to just skip through it. The text on the article is started by subheadings. This makes the reader aware of what that section of text is going to be about so that they can choose which part to read first and which bit to read last. All of the fonts that have been used in the double page spread for headings, subheadings and text are in bold fonts. This makes them stand out from the rest of the page. These styles of font may have been used because Beyonce is a very influential artist that is very highly regarded in the music industry. Her image and personality may be described as bold which may suggest why the bold font has been used. The fonts reflect that the article is about Beyonce. The journalist that has written the article’s name is shown above the main text in a medium sized bold font. Her name stands out enough to be seen by the reader but not enough that it takes away the attention from the article itself. Some readers like to read certain articles by specific journalists because they write in a certain way or because they are always truthful etc. by having the journalists name at the top of the article, the reader is made aware of who wrote it and what magazine they work for therefore meaning the reader may want to read their work again, reading that magazine again.
  • 13. The mast head of the pages is in a bold large font. This makes it stand out against the rest of the page so it is clear what the article is about. Nicki’s name clearly stands out because it is one of the most significant things on the page. It is likely that the reader will be interested in her music therefore will want to know that this page is about her. The masthead uses the word ‘gospel’ which suggests that Nicki Minaj is holy or like a god which to some crazed fans she may be. The text on the pages is split into sections. If all the writing was together in one large paragraph or section, it would appear boring and be tedious for the audience to read. So, to keep it interesting, sections with subheadings are used. The subheadings also make it easy for the reader to pick and choose which parts of the article to read first. All of the text is in black. This colour contrasts the pink background so that it stands out but it isn’t in a vibrant colour like pink because it is a less significant part of the page. The main image for the article is of Nicki Minaj. This lets the reader know that the article is about her and catches their eye so that they will read it. The image has been placed in the centre of the page so that all the text surrounds her framing her. This further entices the readers interest in the article as it suggests it all around her. She has been dressed in a specific way. More often than not, Nicki can be seen in vibrant outfits that stand out from others. Her own image is reflected in the image on the page because she is wearing a more obscure and individual outfit. The colour palate for this double page spread is mostly pinks, black and white. The pink fits well with an article that is all about Nicki Minaj. This is a colour that may be associated with her. She will often wear a pink lipstick and even one of her albums is called ‘pink Friday’. The colours all work well together because even though black may seem like a more boring and dull colour, it is a good contrast to the pink. The pinks make the page stand out because they are very vibrant. I like the use of different shades of pink within the pages. I think that it creates an overall attractive appearance because they all blend together enough to look good but contrast each other enough to see important parts of text. There is a quote positioned in the bottom right corner of the pages. The quote is called a pull quote. It is a quote from the interview with Nicki that has been used to get the readers attention to interest them into reading the rest of the article. The quote reveals some information about what Nicki has said in the article but not everything. It is just enough so that the reader wants to read on, but doesn’t know the full story just from reading that line. There is some negative space at the top of the article. Negative space is an area without text or an image. Negative space can help keep the reader interested and the article looking clean This space keeps the simplistic look of the article and prevents it from appearing too busy. If the article did appear too busy, it may put readers off. A drop cap has been used at the beginning of the article. It has been used to denote the reader to where the article begins. It is in a different colour to the rest of the article text and also in a different font size to the rest of the text. This further makes it stand out therefore making it easy for the reader to see where the article begins.
  • 14. This palate is mostly blues and blacks. Whilst blue can connote sadness, I think it can also relate to something hidden or a secret. This colour scheme may be used for a tag line or teaser to interest the reader into reading more. This palate is all purple. Purple can also connote sadness however, I think it is a good winter colour, which is when my magazine has been designed, and it complements many other colours meaning it would look good in amongst a large page such as a double page spread. This palate is a greyscale. The use of whites and blacks can be good especially in a more colourful palate. They keep the text from looking to busy or harsh to look at. These colours also create a classy appearance making my magazine look professional and well done This is another example of a blue palate. I have chosen this palate because I think it Is important that a magazine fits in with fashion and style. These darker colours fit in well with winter, which is when my magazine is being designed. This colour scheme uses all blues and greys. It is a bit lighter than the others giving it a more ‘happy’ vibe. The grey and the blue contrast each other well however to still keep it in season but keep a good balance of colour. This is another example of lighter palate using pinks. The pinks are more ….. Which keeps them from looking tacky. Pink is a good colour to use in a womens magazine if it is used correctly. Too much pink can make the magazine look like a tween gossip read. This palate is a mix of grey’s purples and pinks. It would be good for a more serious article. It looks very classy and would give a very professional impression for my magazine however it may look a little boring for some content. This is example of a commonly used colour scheme. The red, black and white is a classic Louboutin palate. This is why I like the use of greys and blues. They bring an updated edge to the original but still keep it classy and professional. These colours do not go together as well as some of the others. The blues contrast well with the black to make components stand out well. However, the tan colour may look strange next to an image of a person and doesn’t complement the use of an off white.
  • 15. Here are examples of fonts I have chosen as possible fonts for my magazine. They are all bold and in block capitals. I like that they are all very bold because I think that it makes a statement. It can make your magazine stand out from the rest by being ‘bold’ itself. The bold fonts also provide a clean and minimalistic effects. I like the square look of the fonts which is why I like the way these fonts prevent ascenders and descenders taking up too much space. This font is very square. it doesn’t take up much room and may look good as a drop cap for an article. I like that this font takes up a lot of room because it makes it stand out more. It could be used for a masthead or heading. This font is an ‘in-between’ font. It neither takes up too much or too little space. It is neither too bold or not bold enough however I think this is what makes it a slightly boring font that readers may find tedious to read. The squareness of this font doesn’t appeal to me as much because it is too bold making it look chunky. This font is one of my favourites. it is bold without being chunky but still takes up lots of space. It would be good for a masthead. This font may look good as a heading or subheading it doesn’t stand out too much but it is still appealing on the eye. This font is very square. it doesn’t take up much room and may look good as a drop cap for an article. This font is bold and square but still feministic. It could be used for an article aimed at women. Again, The squareness of this font doesn’t appeal to me as much because it is too bold making it look chunky. This font carries a lot of strength. It would be good to catch the readers eye on the contents page. I like the way this font is stretched. It makes it appear thinner and attracts the readers eye more than the others. This would be a good font for a teaser quote. I like the way this font looks classical. It looks like calligraphy but with cleaner modern lines which would give my magazine a more classy appearance. This font is also one of my favorites. It is bold and large without being chunky. I like the way the letters are spaced out also because it takes up more room and with my magazine title only being one letter it will suit well.
  • 16. NME magazine uses a very bold title. The magazine always uses a red background with white letters. This creates a brand for the magazine making it easily recognisable for the audience. NME uses a very square and sharp title. This makes it stand out and catch the readers eye and attention. Whilst the colour scheme for NME’s title complements and contrasts, the font makes the letters appear too chunky and masculine. i-D uses an only black title. I think that the black works well because it can be used on almost any cover image and still standout without clashing with its colours. I also like the way only one of the letters is in capital. The i isn’t an ascender or descender so it stays square with the D but it doesn’t look as harsh as if they were both capitals. The title is also always placed vertically instead of horizontally. I think this gives i-D magazine a unique design therefore making it stand out from the others. Billboard use a longer and less bold title but this is compensated for by the use of ascenders to use up more space making the title stand out. The font isn’t too harsh but it is very rounded which can sometimes look slightly out if the rest of the page is very square. The main colour of Billboard contrasts others well without clashing meaning multiple images can be used. The use of primary colour stand out against the black well and complement each other also. Clash magazine use a bolder and more square title. The black works well because it can be used on almost any cover image and still standout without clashing with its colours. Clash’s title font stands out next to the others because it is bold without being too chunky. Q magazine use a simple one letter title. I like this idea as I think it brings simplicity to the magazine. The Q on its own can be too small sometimes so it is important to remember to have It at a good size where it will catch the attention of the reader well. Q magazine use a common colour scheme of red and white. Whilst this colour scheme does often work well by contrasting other colours, it is too often used. This means it does not stand out against other magazine titles meaning it wont catch the readers eye as well.
  • 17. Other Magazine Titles Here are some titles from my favourite magazines. They aren’t music magazines they predominantly feature women's fashion. However, I think its important for a magazine to be updated and in fashion to seem appealing to its audience. I will take some inspiration from fashion magazines to help create my magazine because my target audience would also read and be very interested in current fashion trends therefore making it even more important to be in. All of the titles listed have some things in common that I think I could also adopt for my magazine. All of the magazines use block capitals for their titles. I think this is because it stands out more against others and keeps a square and bold look for the magazine. It it easier to keep consistency and flow if all or most of the components are of the same shape. For example if a rounded font was used, a square image may not fit so well. The titles are all also in black. This Is because black complements most colours so it will still look clean and tidy on the cover of the mag.
  • 18. My Magazine Title I have taken inspiration from V magazine for my magazine title. I like the simplicity of a one letter title as I think it will add to my minimalistic magazine appearance. The A will not be in this font however I think it is a good representation of the style of font it will be in. I wont have a glow effect on it either. The lines will be very defined. I would like to have the A translucent so that the background can be seen underneath it. I took this idea from V magazine also. I think this magazine title will make my magazine unique and stand out from others.

  • 26. Language Register This double page spread consists of an interview with Nicki MInaj. The title begins with ‘The Gospel acording to Nicki Minaj’. This implies that she is God like making her extremely significant. Some of her music also refers to her being a ‘God’ or a ‘Queen’ so this title appropriately links in. This theme is continued throughout the interview as the subheading of the article begins with ‘Bow down mortals’ implying that Nicki is immortal giving her special qualities. Again the use of ‘Queen’ can be seen in the subheading. ‘Queen of Hip Hop stands before you’ This emphasises her importance suggesting she is greatly influential in the music industry. The target audience has clearly been considered as the interview remains mostly informal. Whilst the interview itself may have been a more formal event. The way it is written in the magazine article it similar to that of a conversation. This is done because the reader will be more interested. Nicki’s thoughts and feelings were discussed. ‘I felt like I didn’t need to do it anymore’. Again, meaning that the reader could remain interested.
  • 27. Language Register Here is an example of an interview, taken from the Clash website, that Clash Magazine conducted with Jay Z. The interview begins by the interviewer asking Jay Z how he is. This starts the interview off as informal. The interview remains informal as the interviewer asks Jay Z questions about his personal life. This style of interviewing is more interesting for a reader to read through. It appears more relaxed and casual which is how the audience would normally speak. This interview is similar to the Nicki Minaj interview. I think this style of writing and interviewing will be best for my magazine.
  • 28. Photographers, Designers, Creators. Helmut Newton Neville Brody Brodovitch David LaChapelle David LaChapelle is an American commercial photographer and artist. He is known for is individual photographic style that has been described as ‘hyper-real and slyly subversive’. Personally, I think his work stands out because it often portrays social messages without being cliché. When LaChapelle was 17 years old, he met Andy Warhol, who offered him his first job as a photographer at Interview Magazine. His photographs of celebrities in Interview garnered positive attention, and before long he was shooting for a variety of top editorial publications. LaChapelle’s images subsequently appeared on the covers of pages including i-D, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Face, Vanity Fair, Vogue Italia and Vogue Paris. David LaChapelle, I think, is a relevant photographer to research for my magazine. I am hoping to cross fashion with music to create a unique magazine that appeals to a wider target audience. LaChapelle has worked with both the music and fashion industry nicely setting him as a good base for some of my images. Some of his work can be more extreme and explicit. LaChapelle regularly features nude models and over sexualised portrayals in his work however I think I can take some ideas and adapt them to suit my magazine well. One my favourite pieces of his work was the 2013 Kardashian Christmas card. He managed to cross a modern and post-appocalyptic theme with Christmas to create a stunning photo perfect for a Kardashian image.
  • 29. Photographers, Designers, Creators. Helmut Newton Helmut Newton was a German- Australian photographer. He was described as a ‘prolific and widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black and white photos were a mainstay of Vogue.’ Newton was Interested in photography from the age of 12, when he purchased his first camera and worked for the German photographer Elsie Neulander Simon. In 1946, Newton set up a studio in fashionable Flinders Lane in Melbourne and worked on fashion and theatre photography in the affluent post-war years. Newton's growing reputation as a fashion photographer was rewarded when he secured a commission to illustrate fashions in a special Australian supplement for Vogue magazine, published in January 1956. He won a 12-month contract with British Vogue and left for London in February 1957. He returned to Melbourne in March 1959 to a contract for Australian Vogue. Newton settled in Paris in 1961 and continued to work as a fashion photographer. His images appeared in magazines including the French edition of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. I think Newton’s work has been very influential over the years. His provocative black and white images are frequently used in the modern day and often seen on a ‘classic’ vogue cover. His work will be good examples to take inspiration from as he worked predominantly in fashion which will have a great influence on my magazine.
  • 30. Photographers, Designers, Creators. Alexey Brodovitch Alexey Brodovitch was a photographer and designer who was most famous for his art direction of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. Brodovitch began designing after moving to Paris to become an artist. On nights and weekends away from the Ballets Russes, Brodovitch began sketching designs for textiles, china, and jewelry. By the time his work for the ballet had finished, he had already compiled an extensive portfolio of these side projects and was selling his designs to fashionable shops. He worked part-time doing layouts for Caheirs de art, an important art journal, and Arts et Métiers Graphiques, an influential design magazine. He gained public recognition for his work in the commercial arts by winning first prize in a poster competition for an artists' soiree called Le Bal Banal on March 24, 1924. n spring of 1934, the Art Directors Club of New York asked Brodovitch to design their "13th Annual Art Directors Exhibition" at the Rockfeller Centre, New York. It was there that Carmel Snow, the recently appointed editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar, saw Brodovitch's work for the first time. She knew right away that Brodovitch would be the one to transform the magazine into a real revival of Vogue, where she had started her career. To those who worked with him at Bazaar, the pinnacle of Brodovitch's career as a designer was the unfailing elegance of his pages. This elegance, combined with an element of innovation was the ideal mix for a fashion magazine. I think I will be able to take inspiration from Brodovitch’s work. His designs are ‘perfect for a fashion magazine’. If I combined these designs with music content I could get a good cross over between the two to meet my target audience.

  • 32. Institution Analysis Clash Published by: Music Republic LTD Music Republic LTD are a distribution and design company that was founded in January 2007. The company offers ‘a new and exciting alternative to the existing independent music sales and distribution companies in the UK and Europe.’ They take a more diverse and ‘cutting edge’ approach towards the music industry bringing individuality and unique style. The company has worked with retail campaigns for numerous artists including; Fleet Foxes, Two Door Cinema Club, You me at Six, Neneh Cherry, Slim, Freemasons, The Cribs, Lambchop, Mazzy Star, Gold Panda, Caribou and Beach House. Republic of music offers flexible and dynamic deals for both physical and digital distribution for its customers. I think that Music Republic LTD would be a suitable publishers for my magazine. They appear to take a ‘new’ and modern approach to distributing the magazines and I think that my target audience would take to this well. I like that the company distribute both digitally and physically. I think that in some ways the magazine industry is being taken over by digital advances. So, if my magazine were to be distributed both physically and digitally It has more chance of being more successful. I’m not sure that all of the artists listed that Music Republic LTD have worked with fit in with my style of magazine.
  • 33. Institution Analysis Vogue Published by: Conde Nast Conde Nast is a division of Advance Publications. It is a mass media company based at the One World Trade Center in New York. The company attracts more than 164 million consumers across its 20 print digital media brands including: Allure, Architechural Digest, Ars Techina, Bon Apetit, Brides, Glamour, Gold World, GQ, The New Yorker, Self, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Wired. The company was founded in 1909 by Conde Montrose Nast and has been owned and operated by the Newhouse family since 1959. Conde Nast are publishers and distributors for Vogue Magazine. For my magazine, I have chosen to take inspiration from fashion magazines like vogue. I think this publishers have a well branded fashion section as they also publish for other high end fashion magazines including Teen Vogue and Vanity Fair. Conde Nast also have a well established web page where the magazines that they publish can be advertised. I like this because it means my magazine would be advertised amongst others that are highly regarded and respected. I think my magazine would also fit in well with the style of magazines that this publishing company distributes.
