2. Diversity of messages
A diversity of representations of young
people are discernable within
contemporary UK media and these
correspond to a range of possible
ideological positions………………….
3. Past and contemporary
demonisation………
The narrative is one of a society breaking down
viewed as a result of declining standards of behaviour and
caused by lack of discipline, poor parenting or increased immorality. The focus
is almost always working class youths and does not accept
that environment is a factor. Probably the hegemonic view?
Right of centre ideological views make these youths
entirely responsible for their behaviour and may have
the agenda of convincing people society has not been
tough enough on law and order. The working class
get what they deserve-justifies class inequality
Such a view, expressed by adults, tends to present
middle class values as admirable and has been around
for centuries.
4. INVERSION….Flip
it!!
Postmodernism plays with the
stereotypes, turning the
“monsters “ into heroes and
asking critical questions about
society and the media and
poking fun at demonisation.
(Remember, postmodernism
believes things are very
complicated- can’t be explained
simply, e.g. youths are all bad.)
Gauntlett and Cohen love ATB!!!!
5. Left wing/post-marxist/
Althusserian perspective…..
Social realist texts suggest
that environment and
poverty are the cause of
crime, not immorality
Highly realistic M-E-S to emphasise
that environment is key- monstrous
society creates monsters- often
critical of middle class/authority.
Sympathetic to the working class.
8. CONTENT ANALYSIS
Another form of very valuable aspect of representation
research, content analysis provides you with useful
statistical evidence for your work.
Look what happens if we “google image” youths and
uk youths…differences? How many images? What % are
negative?
Have a look at this example of content analysis…….

portrayal-media/
Carry out content analysis research for some
contemporary media texts- news, films, soaps, dramas,
musical genres to provide you with essay evidence.
Which views are visible? Left, right, postmodern? %?
