• Personal Development, Health and
Physical Education is a vital component of
the K-6 curriculum.
• PDHPE teaches and encourages all
students to make positive health and life
choices. It encourages personal safety,
nutrition, hygiene, consumerism, drug use,
the environment, disease prevention and
general physical development.
2. MAIN FOCUS OF PDHPE
• In our rapidly changing society there is an increasing
community awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles.
• GOOD HEALTH is characterised by improved quality of life, less
sickness and disability, happy and personal lifestyles, family
and social experiences and the opportunity to make choices
in work and recreation.
• PDHPE is one of six key learning areas and focuses on
encouraging students to make informed decisions relating to
health and physical activity and being able to develop
positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.
3. • The study of PDHPE aims to help all students with their self-confidence and
self-acceptance.
• PDHPE is also a guide for students to interact positively with their family,
peers and teachers. It also assists with the children’s feeling of belonging
and it also helps them form relationships of trust.
• Individuals live a healthy lifestyle when they live in a way that allows them
the greatest chance of achieving and maintaining-
- Mental wellbeing

4. WHY IS PDHPE AN IMPORTANT KEY LEARNING
AREA WITHIN THE PRIMARY CURRICULUM?
• Encourages an understanding and valuing of self and others
• Promotes physical activity
• Emphasises informed decision making leading to effective and responsible
actions.
More specifically the study of PDHPE is concerned with:
• Physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and development patterns
• The development and maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships
• Factors influencing personal health choices
• Living and learning in a safe, secure environment
• Adoption of an active lifestyles
• Fundamental movement patterns ad coordinated actions of the body
• Skills that enable action for better health and movement outcomes
5. SUBJECT MATTER PDHPE K-6
The subject matter of PDHPE is categorised into eight interrelated strands. In order for
students to achieve the outcomes of the PDHPE syllabus, it is essential that
teaching/learning occurs in each of the strands in each stage of their primary
education.
The subject matters include:

• Games and sport
• Growth and Development
• Gymnastics
• Interpersonal Relationships

The skills include:
