A presentation about the integration of Scrum and User Experience Design (UX), part of Barcelona Scrum Meetup series. We discuss models such as Waterfall, Dual Track and Full UX & Scrum integration.
Speakers: Alex Ballarin (@alexballarin76) and Mariona Bassols (erni)
2. Why this
meetup?
Integrating Agile Software
Development (Agile) and user
centered design (UX) can be hard.
We will discuss several approaches
to integrate Scrum and UX from the
theoretical and practical point of
view.
● Design + Development phases
● Dual Track Scrum
● Full UX integration in Scrum
3. Agenda
● The theory
○ Design and development phases (waterfall)
○ Dual Track model (staggered Sprints)
○ Full Scrum and UX integration
● Experiences from the trenches
○ Experiences from the trenches 1: Case Study 1 (Waterfall)
○ Experiences from the trenches 2: Case Study 2 (Dual track)
○ Experiences from the trenches 3: Case Study 3 (full Scrum)
● Open discussion
6. Waterfall: a Classic UX approach
Discover and Design
● Discover phase // Requirements
● Categorize the problems you uncover
● Create personas and journey maps
● Run ideation exercises to generate ideas
● Build and test a prototype
Develop and collect feedback
● Development Phase
● Feature potentially releasable
● Feedback loop
Jesse James Garrett, The Elements of User Experience
Discovery work is very
unpredictable.
● Discovery activities have
different rhythms.
● The goal is to kill as
soon as possible bad
ideas.
Development work is more
predictable.
● Flow of development
activities can be optimized.
● The goal is to deliver things
with quality and efficiency.
7. Waterfall… In good day...
Pros
● Global design coherence on big
and complex programs (p.e.
Brand redesign).
● More time and budget for
design (sometimes).
Cons
● Design validation can be
too late (and expensive)
to be useful.
● Design couldn’t be
technically feasible or
benefit from technical
capabilities.
● Usually a ton of waste.
On a good day, 50% of those
spec documents would get
implemented – which meant
that on a good day, 50% of my
work got thrown away.

10. Dual Track or Duel Track?
Pros
● An easier change for organizations
doing waterfall.
● A designer feels easier to
synchronize with the development
teams (e.g. events)
Cons
● Waste, many design
ideas need both design
and technical rework.
● Delays in feedback
● Lack of communication
or empathy

11. Full Scrum and UX integration
https://medium.com/swlh/here-is-how-ux-design-integrates-with-agile-and-scrum-4f3cf8c10e24
12. Full Scrum and (Lean) UX integration
Discovery Delivery
Design Sprint* Big idea validation Big technical risk validation
Requirements / Design Business / Functional Functional / Tecnical
Customer’s feedback Experiments, workshops... Functional review & usage metrics
Prototyping Wizard of Oz, Paper, etc. A/B testing,Canary releasing
Validation Idea validation Release validation
Refinement Mostly during delivery Mainly functional & technical
Feature potentially releasable Mockups are not increments! During or End of Sprint
Feedback loop Using experiments, mockups... Functional review & usage metrics
15. A full-time designer for each Scrum team?
The best approach if possible, but let’s also consider…
● Design is typically more critical in B2C products than B2B.
● Difficult to justify for smaller teams.
● Specialists scale better coaching team members than doing the
work.
● Are team members engaged and learning to learn design?
16. Paths of Glory, Stanley Kubrick, 1957.
Experiences from the trenches
17. Waterfall; useful from scratch projects
Pros
● Research
● Define Navigation
● Define Journey maps
● First mockups look & feel in PBI’s
Cons
● Continuous increments
● No backlog fulfilled
● Large projects
● No SCRUM framework
● Risk in waste
19. Dual track SCRUM; mature project
Pros
● Part of cross-functional team
● Lean UX/Agile track powers
iterative experimentation
● Scrum ceremonies
● Side by side with the PO
● QA as Agile role
● Mockups ready for Sprint Planning
Cons
● User-centered design
● UX as a visual discipline
(Don Norman’s concern)
● Significant waste and
rework (feedback)
20. Dual track SCRUM; Agile Welcome
Description
● Online lockers App
● Scrum Team 3pax
● Discovery and feedback
● All team involved suggestion/idea
● 1 product backlog UX US as PBI’s
● Dual Scrum
CaseStudy2(dualtrack)
21. Full Scrum and UX integration
Pros
● A dedicated designer on every team
● Research within (Users/Customers)
● Satisfying the stakeholder
frequently and at high quality
● First-class citizen of the backlog
● UX writing - User Stories
● “Canary Releasing” beta testers
Cons
● To be a sniper -
Assumptions
● UX ownership -
Developer-oriented
approach in design work
● Do I work for the API?
● Have you got leadership
skills?
22. Full Scrum, total integration
Description
● Online marketing tool
● Scrum Team 7pax
● 1 product backlog UX US in PBI’s
● Work in parallel + integration
● Dual track to Full Scrum
