The Moral Principles Of The Army
Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1–0 states, "living by and upholding the moral principles of
the Army Ethic" is the foundation to our profession. An organization cannot survive if there are no
foundation for morals. The organization will internally implode. This is a critical fact for the Army.
Individuals that do not have a foundation that aligns with the Army's foundation is detrimental to the
organization. The purpose for this short paper is to explore the fundamentals of our profession;
examine the need for structure; how to return to basics of the profession; who needs to enforce
standards; finally, implementing a culture change within the Army. Army leaders have categorized
the four problems that currently plague the Army Established on July 14, 1775, United States Army
emerged during the conflict between the French and Indians. The Army, created to fight and win our
Nation's wars, has experienced its fair share of battle. July 4, 1776, marked a change that would
require the Army's engagement. The Declaration of Independence, signed by 56 individuals from 13
colonies documented that day their high treason ("The Price", 2013). Every original signer and their
family were now targets. These individuals, identified by the King of England, became the hunted.
Many were tortured and killed. In 1776, Congress appointed George Washington as the Commander
and Chief of the Army. Standards and regulatory guidance began developing shortly after

Native Americans and Slave Trade in America: The Story of...
From the reading of chapter 1 and chapter 2 in "America: The Story of Us" by Kevin Baker, I
highlighted three points of interest for my discussion assignment. The first is of the impressions the
Native Americans had of the European's explorers in the New World. The second point of interest is
about the slave trade in America. The last point of interest is about the Prussian–born military
officer Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben.
The Native American believe the early settlers to be harmless and capable of easily manipulated. As
was the case when the English's settlers established a Jamestown settlement in the Chesapeake Bay.
The Native Americans saw the European's explorers as "physically weak, sexually ... Show more

Another factor enabling the slave trade was a better nautical knowledge. An "understanding of the
wind and ocean currents of the North and South Atlantics" (Eltis, 2007). Not having enough
indenture servants from Europe and a dying Amerindian population made trading for African's
slaves the best choose. The "agency" that supplied the slaves were the ruling tribe of the African's
region. Slaves were either former prisoner of war or a person of criminal tendencies (Eltis, 2007).
Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben or Baron von Steuben was a name every
U.S. soldier must learn when studying to be a noncommissioned officer. It is a name associated with
the answer to the study question "The Army received it's first real training from what former
Prussian Officer at Valley Forge in the winter of 1778?" I am intrigued to learned of his discharge
from the Prussian Army and his improvidence (Baker, 2010). Shortly after gaining the confidence of
George Washington, he was entrusted with retraining the Continental Army. A task he relished
because he loved caring for soldiers. "Steuben insisted that officers should put the needs of their
men ahead of their own and that they should temper discipline with loving concern" (Lockhart,
2008). That mantra would eventually lead to the first official regulation of the U.S. Army. Imparted
with the tactical proficiency of a modern army, the Continental Army fought

Contributions In The Case Of Benedict Arnold's War
Most espionage cases involve two things: a foreign connection and an insider threat. Many factors
lead to a trusted individual having no alternative than betraying his or her own country. John Andre
was the foreign connection in this instance, and Benedict Arnold being the insider threat that had no
alternative but to commit treason and become the United States most famous traitor. Benedict
Arnold had a laundry list of indicators that made him an attractive target to the likes of the British.
Arnold was the second most important General in the American Army, and that type of person
should get the praise they deserve, and Arnold did not receive that praise. Arnold had numerous
battle victories, including Saratoga, possibly his most famous, but still felt like the Americans did
not appreciate his value. On top of that, Arnold was not being paid for his efforts as a General in the
Continental Army. Many spies and traitors in the history of the United States generally have
financial troubles compounded among other indicators. When someone feels they are having
financial troubles they look for another way to make a source of income and being a spy or traitor
seems to be a method to accomplish that goal. If Benedict Arnold had been treated fairly and
received proper compensation, both monetarily and respectfully, Andre never would have had the
insider threat needed to accomplish his mission.
The second reason the incident could have been prevented does not exist because the incident was
prevented. Andre never got the defensive plans back to the British, and Arnold's treachery was
stopped before the British had a chance to come to fruition. The British did have control of Arnold,
and he could possibly detail the defenses of West Point, but by that time the Americans most likely
had already augmented the defenses of West Point.
If Arnold was released back to the Americans, Andre's life would have been spared. The British did
not want to exchange Arnold for Andre because General Clinton did not want to discourage other
defectors from coming forward with information beneficial to the British. The Americans would
have had to work harder to make sure the British were not able to pull something over on them
again. Andre

The X Men Secretary : A Dual Synthesis Of Real Historical...
My character, the X–Men Secretary, was a dual synthesis of real historical figures John Tyndall and
Thomas Hirst. My character rose up from rather humble beginnings; he was raised a Catholic on a
farm in Ireland, the sixth of eight surviving children, and attended public school (Driscoll, et al.).
The Secretary tirelessly educated himself in the sciences during his time as a surveyor and mining
engineer. When he finally decided to obtain a formal education, the English–Anglican doors of
Cambridge and Oxford were closed to him because, though he had not practiced religion since his
youth, he was an Irish Catholic on paper. As a result, he moved to Germany to complete a doctorate
in physics in just under two years.
The Secretary caught the attention of Sir Edward Sabine as a result of his research on magnetism –
fictional work modeled after John Tyndall's – and was recognized and helped to secure a position in
the Royal Society. This session was my character's "final year of a three year term as member of the
Royal Society Council" with the position of secretary (Driscoll, et al.). This position gave my
character "considerable power" as I worked with the A–Men Secretary and General Sabine to map
out agendas for every game session, an ability which both the General and myself used to our
advantage a number of times (Driscoll, et al.). We would set the agenda and ask if the others had any
qualms with it, and several times we shifted speeches into more favorable time slots based

Discuss The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Colonists...
Going into the American Revolution the British and American Colonists had many advantages.
They also had some disadvantages that were usually countered by the other's advantages. I will talk
about each of their advantages and then discuss their disadvantages.
The British had many advantages going into the American Revolution. One advantage is that they
had a professional army that was well trained. By having a well–trained army they had a better
chance of winning the battles. The British troops were already in the colonies, the most important
places being the port cities such as New York and Boston. The British had a veteran officer corps.
Their officers had already fought in the French and Indian War. Supply foundations, by having

Because the colonists didn't have a real fighting force, there were very few well trained soldiers, and
even fewer professional soldiers on their side. The British were much better fighters than they were.
The colonists did not have a navy at all, so the British were able to keep sending ships for supplies
and they had control of the seas with their strong navy. The colonists had trouble finding other
nations to trade with because they did not have a vast treasury and the other nations were fearful of
not being paid back if the colonists lost the war. The colonists did not have a strong central
government, which meant that decisions took a long time and many of the different colonies
disagreed. The colonies did not have much support from the Native American tribes and were
fighting them as well as the

Peter F. Drucker is the management scholar. He is thought to be the establishing father of current
management. Peter Drucker, whose life crossed the previous century (1909 – 2005), was an
exceedingly instructed native of the world: an innovative soul who composed thirty–nine books
including numerous fantastic chips away at business management. He was a man of numerous parts:
a sharp eyewitness, a long lasting understudy, an educator, mentor of eminent corporate pioneers,
and the organizer of an official school in Claremont, California, that bears his name. Peter
Ferdinand Drucker was an author, management advisor and college teacher. His written work
concentrated on management related writing. Peter Drucker made well known the term ... Show

3. The point when Peter Drucker, then a trainee bank assistant in Hamburg, initially contemplated
the works of Sören Kierkegaard (1813 – 1855): the existentialist savant, theologist, religious writer
and advocate of the Idea of Christianity, Kierkegaard was still moderately obscure. Drucker was
captivated by the philosophy embraced by this philosophical independent, in particular, to utilize
logic as an instrument for reflecting upon Christianity. Kierkegaard suspected that people existed in
an element relationship as both profound creatures and individuals from society. As per
Kierkegaard, it is conviction that instills our otherworldly existence with the conviction that we are
not the only one, with importance, and with a flat out perspective, in particular God. The
distinguishment on one hand that wickedness is a piece of human instinct and on the other that a
sufferable coexistence is still conceivable got to be natural to Peter Drucker's own rationality.
This gathering of Peter F. Drucker's papers investigates the crossing point between society,
governmental issues, and financial aspects. Notwithstanding this grand objective, be that as it may,
the papers themselves stay sensible, very meaningful, and brimming with stories and thoughts that
make us ponder the business world around us.

Pioneers changed the world in many different ways. They put their mind to it and got the job done.
Not all of its physical some is just speech/ talking and mental you have to be smart. Gandhi and
church were exactly like that. Gandhi changed the way war went on just giving speeches and
protesting he walked over 200 miles for his protest, church changes everything through his drawing
abilities he drew The Hudson River School. Gandhi had to deal with a lot of things in his lifetime.

The Invention Of Nature By Andrea Wulf
Alexander Von Humboldt was a Prussian naturalist whose work has helped shape and define our
modern understanding of nature. He used enlightenment rationalism to navigate his way through life
and his deep connection to his natural environment inspired a visionary movement in ushering out
the monotheistic creationist worldview. "Humboldt's books, diaries and letters reveal a visionary, a
thinker far ahead of his time. He invented isotherms...discovered the magnetic equator...came up
with the idea of vegetation and climate zones that snake across the globe...and revolutionized the
way we see the natural world." (Invention of Nature, 5). Although his work was extensive, author of
'The Invention of Nature, Andrea Wulf suggests that his work has largely been forgotten due to his
polymath approach of including art, history, poetry and politics that made him unfavorable. While
Humboldt gave us our concept of nature itself, "the irony is that Humboldt's views have become so
self–evident that we have largely forgotten the man behind them." However, although his work
individual work may be overlooked, Humboldt's success in making science more accessible work
and as a result, his legacy lives on as the source of inspiration for many influential thinkers
throughout history. One of the most influential thinkers inspired by Humboldt, who helps us
remember Humboldt's legacy is John Muir. Inspired by Von Humboldt's travels, Muir wanted to
explore the world just like Von Humboldt. He possessed

Sapir–Worf Hypothesis: Linguistic Determinism and Linguistic Relativity
The romantic idealism of the late eighteenth century, as encountered in the views of Johann Herder
(1744–1803) and Wilhelm von Humboldt (I 762–1835), placed great value on the diversity of the
world's languages and cultures. The tradition was taken up by the American linguist and
anthropologist Edward Sapir (1884–1939) and his pupil Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897–1941), and
resulted in a view about the relation between language and thought which was widely influential in
the middle decades of this century. The "Sapir–Whorf hypothesis," as it came to be called, combines
two principles. The first is known as linguistic determinism: it states that language determines the ...

In Hopi, there is one word (masa'ytaka) for everything that flies except birds–– which would include
insects, airplanes, and pilots. This seems alien to someone used to thinking in English, but, Whorf
argues, it is no stranger than English–speakers having one word for many kinds of snow, in contrast
to Eskimo, where there are different words for falling snow, snow on the ground, snow packed hard
like ice, slushy snow (cf. English slush), and so on. In Aztec, a single word (with different endings)
covers an even greater range of English notions––snow, cold, and ice. When more abstract notions
are considered (such as time, duration, velocity), the differences become yet more complex: Hopi,
for instance, lacks a concept of time seen as a dimension; there are no forms corresponding to
English tenses, but there are a series of forms which make it possible to talk about vari– ous
durations, from the speaker's point of view. It would be very difficult, Whorf argues, for a Hopi and
an English physicist to understand each other's thinking, given the major differences between the
languages. Examples such as these made the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis very plausible; but in its
strongest form it is unlikely to have any adherents now. The fact that successful translations between
languages can be made is a major argument against it, as is the fact that the conceptual

Roles Of The Drummer Boys Of The American Revolution
Will Partridge
Drummer Boys of the American Revolution
Drummer Boys played a valuable role in the war. They supported the troops by: 1) completing camp
chores to free the men for more difficult tasks, and 2) They played duty calls and signals to tell the
soldiers what to do during combat and played marching music to boost troop morale. 3) They helped
sustain order and discipline. The drummer boys were from the thirteen colonies. They were often
enlisted by their parents or if they were a slave by their master. Some slaves volunteered so that they
could earn their freedom. The drummer boys also enlisted because they were very patriotic. The age
range of the drummer boys was sixteen to twenty although there younger drummers who were
twelve to fourteen years old.
The drummer boys did camp chores to free the adults for harder work and also did many things
adults did. The boys gathered firewood and chopped wood, guarded prison coastlines guarded
prisoners dug latrines waited on officers slaughtered livestock hauled small wagons built defensive
works spied on enemies carried messages marched for miles foraged for food.
Drums are loud so the soldiers could hear them during battle and they were the way to
communicate. The history of using drums goes back to early, Switzerland. Music was for the morale
of the troops. The average snare drum they used was eight pounds. The drum was eighteen inches
deep and the straps were made of leather. The drumsticks were made of

Up to now, several strategies have been undertaken to modify alkaline titanate such as noble metal
deposition, heterojunction formation and incorporation of metal ions into titanate. Recently, Wang et
al. reported the synthesis of Na–K2Ti6O13/g–C3N4 composite material and tested their
photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange under both simulated sunlight and
visible light irradiation. Until now, no one has reported the surface modification of alkaline titanate
using transition metals grafting with enhanced photocatalytic under visible light source. The surface
modification has done so far with noble metals, which are highly expensive and limits the
possibility for practical applications. The surface modification with ubiquitous metals has gained
much attention as they avoid the high cost noble metals. The grafting with transition metal
nanocluster promotes the multi–electron reduction reaction of oxygen molecule and ultimately
enhances the photocatalytic activity. In this study, we report for the first time Cu(II)–nanocluster
grafted Na–K2Ti6O13 nanobelts using molten salt followed by impregnation technique. The
modification with Cu(II) cluster could enhance the light harvesting ability of Na–K2Ti6O13 to
perform under visible light source. The synthesized samples were systematically characterized by
different techniques to validate the

PROJECTION The word 'projection' denotes an individual placing their own values or beliefs onto
another person, to reflect their own morals. Often it is done because of or to encourage a feeling of
affinity or connection. I will be using this word to express what I see as the systematic and often
unconscious blurring of the lines between idol and idolater. Whilst hero worship is not necessarily
negative, in cases where a person projects their own values or beliefs onto a vastly different person
or group it can have negative repercussions. In the Romantic era, projection took the form of
Romantics pressing their own modern views and values onto popular ancient figures and ideas were
ancient. This created a cycle of populist hero worship and historical discourse that led to such
absurdities as the common Victorian claim that Sappho was as a Headmistress of a Girls finishing
school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the popularity, class, education, and influence of authoritative Romantics, Romantic ideology
affected the structure of scholarship. Across Europe, schools had introduced new education models
emphasising language, both ancient and modern. In addition, curriculums modelled on Greek forms
intended to develop character and values were widespread. To satisfy the demand for a more
authoritative and restricted community, classical study became specialised in the University of
Gottingen, which established an Altertumswissenschaft (science of antiquity) course. This collated
the many aspects of study or appreciation of ancient culture into one degree – inaccessible to many.
What had been a disparate field open to amateur enthusiasts and professional linguists or
theologians alike became a more rigid and dogmatic expert community. This community still
retained the ideals it had been founded upon; elitism, mysticism, projection, and an obsession with
language and its burgeoning racial implications permeated the new professional

Nineteenth-Century Exploration And On A Farther Shore The...
Both in the books, The Humboldt Current: Nineteenth–Century Exploration and the Roots of
American Environmentalism and On a Farther Shore the Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson, the
authors are trying to prove that the individuals whom they wrote about deserve a place in the
ongoing narrative of Environmentalism. Alexander Von Humboldt and Rachel Carson showed how
their subjects were led to a life of environmentalism by their passion. Whether it was from a love of
the water or a love to explore, both of these individuals were led down a road of environmentalism.
Although their accomplishments are completely different, it does not mean that one is more
significant than the other. The fact that they had different results can easily be explained by the
different times in which these two individuals were alive and active. Humboldt's journey did not
begin until 1799, which was 108 years before Carson was even born. They had different passions,
which led to different results, but in the end, they were both incredibly significant. Aaron Sachs
(author of The Humboldt Current) does a great job of describing the incredibly interesting journeys
that Humboldt had. From his trip to Venezuela to the United States, and everything in between,
Sachs painted a picture of an explorer on a mission to study new land, to discover new things, and to
develop ideas about these new areas and pass those ideas on to the rest of the world. Humboldt was
more than an explorer, he was truly a scientist.

Characteristics Of Benedict Arnold
Are historical figures defined by what great things they did or petrifying things? Benedict Arnold
had a difficult life growing up. He dropped out of school and started working with his cousins, but
he would often leave to and join the army. He went off on a bad route when his parents died because
he went from business deals to sort of smuggling; however, when he heard of lexington and concord
he rushed over and tried to get in on the action. He was then bullied and such by his fellow generals.
What events can define this person as a hero or villain? It is believed that Benedict Arnold was a
great general in the revolutionary war. He fought beside George Washington in the continental army.
When he was a general for the continental army he had a couple of successful raids and took over
british forts. He was also promoted to colonel by Benjamin church. He was doing great during his
time with the continental army and his comrades trusted him, and he was praised for his successful
attacks. Even though, a couple of his companions did bully and mess with him, they still found him
useful when it came to taking over british forts and achieving bountiful attacks towards the british.
He even got hurt during an attack on the british. George Washington sent Arnold to attack Quebec
where he hurt his knee. As a result, his attack in Quebec failed miserably. This really shows that
Benedict arnold was trying his best to be great man and do what was right. After Arnold had done so

Carl Friedrich Gauss Essay example
Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855)
Introduction: Carl Friedrich Gauss is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He
is a creator in the logical–mathematical domain as he contributed many ideas to the fields of
mathematics, astronomy, and physics. Being a math education major, I have come into contact with
Gauss' work quite a few times. He contributed greatly to the different areas of mathematics like
linear algebra, calculus, and number theory. Creativity can be seen when a person makes or
discovers substantially new ideas that dramatically impact the domain in which the person is
working. Gauss' work should be considered creative because he contributed so many new theorems

What makes this more amazing is that nobody had taught him arithmetic. He picked it up on his
own. Although Gauss showed great intelligence, his father refused to send him to school. His family
was very poor as his father worked as a gardener, canal tender, and bricklayer (Bell 218). His dad
wanted his son to follow in the family's footsteps and work as a laborer. However, his mother
intervened and sent him to school when he was seven. His teacher, Büttner, was a cold–hearted
teacher who loved proving to his students how ignorant they were (Bell 221). At the age of ten,
Gauss "discovered" a formula that would change his future forever. Büttner asked his students to
add up the numbers between one and a hundred. He figured this would keep his students busy all
day. However, Gauss noticed a pattern. Without anyone showing him the formula [n(n+1)]/2, Gauss
derived it and solved the problem quickly (Burton 510). Büttner was so impressed by this that he
bought Gauss a math book and had his assistant, Johann Bartels, work with the young boy (Bell
222). The friendship that developed between Bartels and Gauss led Bartels to introduce Gauss to
Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand, the Duke of Brunswick (Bell 224). The Duke ended up paying for Gauss
to continue his education at Caroline College, which was actually a preparatory school, and then

George Washington Leadership
George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732. Contrary to popular belief, he never chopped
down a cherry tree, and people should find it appalling that we need to make up a lie about one of
the most honest men in our country's history. His character was not inherited. He sought after every
ounce of his integrity from childhood through adulthood. This is why the Revolution did not make
George Washington. The Revolution revealed him. He also learned the value of hard work at a very
young age. At 16, he was already surveying land and would go on to survey in Ohio. He also loved
agriculture and the science behind it. In his library at Mount Vernon, he kept the most updated books
on agricultural techniques. He was so eager to learn about the latest agricultural advances that a
historian actually called him our nation's first scientific farmer. This experience helped him in battle
when it was necessary for him to try methods that were largely unconventional at the time. In 1754,
Washington became a Lieutenant colonel in the British military. It was during this time that he
fought against the Indians and the French. These long years of battle also saw his life spared
multiple times, which led some of his followers to believe that he could not be killed. However,
Washington was quick to assure them that this was not the case. Shortly after these battles,
Washington returned home where he married a widow named Martha Curtis. When Washington
returned to public service, he held

To What Extent Does Language Influence Thought? Essay
"Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about." – Benjamin Lee
Whorf
Introduction
The idea that language affects the way we remember things and the way we perceive the world was
first introduced by the influential linguists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf (Harley, 2008).
The central idea of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, today more commonly known as the linguistic
relativity hypothesis, holds that "each language embodies a worldview, with quite different
languages embodying quite different views, so that speakers of different languages think about the
world in quite different ways" (Swoyer, 2003). In the late 1990s, Cameron claimed that the Sapir–

Previous research by Malotki (1983) indicated that this finding was never approved as reliable data.
This dilemma will be analyzed later on in reference to a contemporary study consisting of English
and Mandarin native speakers and their ensuing concepts of time.
The Concept of Time in English and Mandarin
Research by Lera Boroditsky (2001) posed many interesting questions regarding linguistic diversity
and the resultant interplay between language and thought: whether linguistic diversity stimulates
different ways of thinking, whether learning new languages changes the way one thinks, whether
bilingual and multilingual people think differently when speaking different languages. Clark (2003)
maintains that although language does not indicate a complete map of consciousness or thought, it is
at least a "representational map" that varies across languages.
Spatial metaphors are used to specify these different aspects of time in our experience with the
world (Boroditsky, 2000). Examples of spatial metaphors for time include looking forward to
something, falling behind schedule, or planning ahead. Results from Boroditsky's study indicated
that there were indeed differences in spatial metaphors employed between English and Mandarin;
while in English front/back terms are predominantly used to conceptualize time, Mandarin speakers
also use vertical metaphors as well as front/back terms to

Language Study: English
At a first approximation, language means any system of symbolic signs used for social
intercommunication, that is to say, any system of signs which serves to express and communicate
ideas and feelings and content of consciousness. Below are a few examples:
Idiom is a faulty style construction of language, which can give rise to ambiguity, multivocality,
confusion.
Example: Sick as a dog.
Analogy is the correspondence and resemblance between two or more events, objects, concepts; it
can be the study of a method based on the analogy between this system and another known system,
partial similarity of form or content of two elements of language that causes one to change under the
influence of the other.
Example: Life is like a box of chocolates.
Metaphor is a figure of speech resulting from a comparison implied by substituting the word–object
compared to word–picture. It only makes sense when the similarities between the two things
become apparent or someone understands the connection.
Example: You are my sunshine.
Simile is an examination of two or more things or phenomenons being made in order to determine
similarities and differences between them; degree of comparison, adjective form which takes some
categories of adverbs to show greater or lesser extent as a noun or a verb has expressed acquiring or
feature that adjective or adverb.
Example: As cold as ice.

Valley Forge : The Battle Of The Valley Forge
Valley Forge
Valley Forge was the Continental Army's winter camp. Valley Forge was located in Whitemarsh,
Pennsylvania by a creek. It wasn't the best place to set up camp because they were unable to defend
southern Pennsylvania at the time and it was also in striking distance of the British Army. The
Continental Army wasn't worried about the British surprise attack because Valley Forge was far
enough away. The leaders encharged of Valley Forge where George Washington, Marquis de

On December 19, 1777, Washington's poorly fed men staggered into Valley Forge. Only about one
in four of the men had shoes, the rest had cuts and splinters. The first constructed hut appeared in
three days. One hut required 80 logs. Just a single hut could go up in one week with the use of one
axe. The huts were built to provided protection from the moderately cold winter and wet conditions,
a typical Pennsylvania winter. By the time February nearly 2,000 huts were built. When it started to
get warmer mud was used to improve ventilation. Soldiers didn't received adequate supplies of meat
and bread. Most of the soldiers survived on "firecake", a tasteless mixture of flour and water, and
"pepper pot soup", a black pepper–flavored tripe broth. Snow was often too thin to make into
drinking water. Animals also starved to death. At the end of the winter there were about 700 hundred
horses left. The army was undernourished and living in crowded quarters. They were also getting
sick with disease such as typhoid, typhus, smallpox, dysentery, and pneumonia. These diseases
contributed to the death of 2,500 soldiers by the end of winter. Women of enlisted men provided
valuable services that the army needed, such as laundry and nursing. Washington repeatedly asked
for relief and supplies, but the Continental Congress couldn't provide it. Finally on January 24,

Why Is Lydia Darragh A Fake Tale?
Lydia Darragh was a brave Quaker Housewife living on Second Street when the British occupied
Philadelphia on September 26th, 1777. Many major wars were taking place, and they were known
as the American Revolution when referred to as one. She supported the war effort and was read out
of her meetings because of that support. There is no concrete proof of Darragh's stories, but a family
member brought her memorable actions to life. That member was Darragh's daughter, Ann, who
recounted the story years after it played out. Since Ann's testimonies have some information that
does not fit with other accounts, some historians have dismissed it as a fake tale. The British made
Darragh move out of her house so that they could use that area. Lydia wanted to stay because she
had two children to take care of. She decided to ask Lord Howe for permission to remain where she

I Have Re Enlisted At Valley Forge?

Would you have re–enlisted at Valley Forge? George Washington once said, "To be prepared for war
is one of the most effective means of preserving peace." George Washington had to prepare his
soldiers at the winter camp at Valley Forge. The winter of 1777 was great for Washington, because
he could keep an eye on the General Howe's British soldiers. Washington had a major problem.
Some men were signing up for one to two year enlistment, but the most common was nine
months. The living conditions were a horrid situation. Many had no shoes and little clothing, which
is not a good combination for a frigid Pennsylvania winter. The winter was not pleasant, and most
soldiers had diseases, like smallpox, and dysentery. Men are dying, running away, or deserting their
post. My term is almost up. I am concerned about my family, and my aging mother. I could desert
and leave for home, or stay and fight. The question has come down to this; If you were a soldier at
Valley Forge, would you have quit. In this situation, to quit is to not re–enlist. I have decided to re–
enlist because our great leaders, the doctors and sickness treatment, and respect.
If you re–enlisted, you would get to stay with our great leaders, like General George Washington
and Friedreich Wilhelm von Steuben. In Jane Root's Video "America, The Story of Us", said that
Washington stayed with his army the whole winter. He could of left if he wanted to, but

Explain What Happened At Valley Forge
Valley Forge
Andrew Hoffman

Valley Forge The Continental Army, led by George Washington, spent the winter of 1777–1778 at
Valley Forge. This was 20 miles outside of Philadelphia, where the British had taken control of
earlier that year. The conditions were terrible at Valley Forge, the weather was freezing and many
soldiers didn't have many clothes, but they had to stay close enough to Philadelphia to keep an eye
on the British (Washington leads). Although the weather was extremely cold and they had almost
nothing for clothes, good did come out spending the winter at valley forge and denying the
command of attacking mid winter. Washington got a chance to train his army, many wives came to

Paideia as Bildung in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment
ABSTRACT: There have been many interpretations of Bildung in the history of German
philosophy, from the Medieval mystics to the secularization of the Enlightenment. Wilhelm von
Humboldt's work at the end of the 18th century is a good example. He placed the idea of Bildung at
the center of his work because it was rooted in a dynamic, transforming idea of the natural and
human worlds while also being oriented toward a model of balance and perfection. Von Humboldt's
interpretation of modernity is characterized by a strong emphasis on change as well as the need to
find criteria for guiding such a transformation that has no intrinsic or predetermined end. Love of

In this way, to render the semantic extent of the term, the meanings of forma and formatio and
imago and imitatio are involved as well; and the following two concepts are implied: firstly the
concept of production according to an order that gives rise to a form (to something subsident on the
basis of mutually congruent rules) and secondly the conformation of the said act to an image given
as assumption, as a model endowed with an absolute value which this image must resemble or aim
for.
The original meaning of bilden, as the Deutsches Wörterbuch by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm states,
is that of a plastic activity on the sensory level and means giving shape, producing a certain object
abiding to the rules which preside over the Art. In this case bilden is a synonym for gestalten and
formieren. But the relationship of reproduction, and therefore of resemblance with respect to an
image must be added to this , and this addition to an Urbild pushes bilden well beyond the pure and
simple formation of an object and gives rise to the complex relationship between model and copy,
original and reproduction which implies a very different approach to the question.
Such a double meaning

What Makes An Honorable Poet?
A simple definition of honorable would be "deserving honor and respect". Some would say it means
having or showing honesty and good moral character. To me the word honorable is used to describe
a person who is deserved of being honored, like someone has done a great thing and should be
honored. I would think Alexander Von Humboldt was and still is a honorable man. Humboldt was a
german naturalist and explorer that was basically famous in the classical period of physical
geography and biogeography areas. He was the one known as who made nature modern. Yet
Alexander Von Humboldt is a name that is almost forgotten in the english speaking world. Most
people wouldn't even know what you would be talking about, if you brought up the subject of
Alexander Von Humboldt. It's ironic because many things are named after his last name,
"Humboldt". Humboldt has had accomplished many things back then. To change our lives he

I think he has, because not only the middle years of the nineteenth century is now considered the era

regarded nature as a living organism and as a global force. Ecologists, environmentalists and nature

valuable contribution to the popularization of science. He marked the course of rivers, measured
mountains, recorded the vocabulary of different languages, studied the artifacts of the Aztec and
other civilizations, and even collected economic data. But like said before Humboldt is almost

Examples Of Unsung Heroes Of American Revolution
American Revolution: Unsung Heroes of Independence "We hold these truths to be self–evident:
that all men and women are created equal." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 1848). During the American
Revolution, America went from being an extension of Britain (and a source of revenue when
needed) to an independent nation built upon the grecian idea of democracy. When people hear the
names George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, or Thomas Jefferson, they easily connect them to
the capable leaders and revolutionary heroes who made great contributions during America's
delicate infancy. These men, along with countless others, fought for the end of the monopolization
Britain held over the colonies and undyingly laid down their lives for the pursuit of freedom.
However, do the names Deborah Sampson, Peter Salem, or Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben ring a
bell? Women, people of color, and Europeans from all different walks of life were also swept up in
the war for independence. The war did not feature people of one gender, race, or nationality. These

What Was The Republican Ideology
The republican ideology is a facet of the social fabric of the colonial citizens of America that may,
arguably, have had the greatest affect on the struggle for independence and the formation of a
constitutional form of government in the United States. The birth of the republican ideology, while
impossible to place an exact date on, or even month, can be traced back more than a decade before
the
Revolutionary War. It can also be argued that this social machine began to function as a result of
circumstances which led many colonist to choose to come to America. The uniformity of this
ideology, however, would change and modify itself as circumstances warranted in the period
between 1760 and 1800.

War, from the religious perspective of the revolutionary in America before the outbreak of war with
England, was seen as a necessary evil. God could permit war as a means of escaping tyranny, such
as that which England was symbolic of. God was, in the eyes of the pre Revolutionary War
revolutionaries, without question on the side of liberty and personal freedom.
The suffering of Americans under the tyrannical hand of
English government was much the same as the suffering undertaken by
Jesus at the cross. He suffered for all the sinful people of the world. He died for our sins. The
revolutionaries felt much the same way about any suffering that may be incurred throughout the
war. They felt that it would be looked back upon as a sacrifice that they made for the success of
future generations of Americans. On an even larger scale, it would also be looked upon as a sacrifice
for liberty and freedom in all countries around the world who suffered under the sinful hand of
oppression.
The revolutionaries also had their own ideas about independence as well. To them independence
was a necessity. It was absolutely key to any further advancement towards their ultimate goal of
freedom to enjoy personal liberties. How exactly independence was physically achieved was not as
important as the fact that it had already, and would always be, achieved in the minds of Americans.

Summary Of Paul Revere
This is the tale of some of the greatest heroes of the American Revolution. The first hero is Paul
Revere. On April 19, 1775, he heard the news of what the British had planned. General Gage of the
British army was going to send troops to Lexington to capture Sam Adams and John Hancock. Paul
Revere knew he had to do something. He got on his horse and went on a midnight ride threw the
colonies. He yelled "The British Regulars are coming!" During his whole ride and told people "One
if by land, two if by sea!" Meaning that they should look at the lighthouse to see how many lanterns
are lit up. On the way to Lexington to save Sam Adams and John Hancock he was stopped by
British soldiers on horses. They asked him where he was going and he told them he was going to
warn the people of the regulars that were coming. They thought that their army was too powerful
and that it didn't matter if the colonists knew that they were coming. So, they let him go. When he
got to Lexington the Regulars weren't there yet. He found John Hancock and Sam Adams and
knocked on their door. Someone came down and asked what he was doing there. He told them to
pack their bags and get out of Lexington. After that he rode on. He soon realized that he should go
back and check on them so he doubled back and knocked on the door. They answered and hadn't
done anything. He stayed there until they left. They rode on and soon realised that they forgot their

It has been said that Arnold should have been the captured and killed instead of Andre. Major Andre
made multiple impacts on the US National Defense. While the mission he set out to complete failed,
Andre broke down the safety net the US thought they had. By gaining the trust of Arnold and setting
up the plan to take over West Point, Andre was the hole in what was set to be a perfect American
plot. If he did not get caught the outcome for the war would have been a different scene. The
Americans thought they had a fool proof plan when in reality they had one of the biggest traitors
history has ever seen in Benedict Arnold. For Andre to get Peggy on board to help with getting
Arnold on board took time and patience. The plan would have worked fully if the ship, Vulture,
would not have been moved downstream after Andre got the information from Arnold. This whole
incident made the Americans realize that there could be more spies among them, and therefore
Washington had Andre executed, to set an example for future spies. The second impact on US
National Defense deals with the classification system that we use in the Army and surrounding

The period between 1813 and July of 1814, known as the Second Republic, is in reality the Terrible
Year of Venezuelan History. The "War to Death" decree creates a furor, and the combats and
indecisive battles, won or lost, follow one upon the other with increasing rapidity. Despite important
victories, Bolívar as well as General Santiago Mariño (who had previously liberated the eastern
areas of the nation) find themselves obliged to give way in the face of a more numerous adversary
led by the royalist José Tomás Boves.
Boves emerges victorious from the La Puerta battle (June of 1814), and the patriots are forced to

their authority challenged by their own companions at arms. The Liberator finds again fraternal
asylum in Nueva Granada, where he intervenes with some measures of success in internal political
struggles which enable the city of Bogotá to find a place in the newly established United Provinces.

Descartes Second Meditations On The First Philosophy
In the "Second Meditation," of "Meditations on the First Philosophy," Descartes contends that, even
if a "malicious deceiver" was purposefully attempting to trick him, one thing is "necessarily true". "I
am...only a thing that thinks...a thinking thing." From this, Descartes asks, "What else am I?" His
answer is that he is not just a body, or a "...thin vapour which permeates the limbs..." He is
something, which is identical with his awareness of himself yet, what that is, he is not sure.
Accordingly, Descartes can only make judgments about the things known to him, because judgment
is thinking, and thus, he knows that he exists. This, for Descartes, is the first thing he can be certain
of, that he does exist, as something that thinks.

Role Of Women In The American Revolution
The American Revolution was a colonial revolt in which America fought for its independence from
Britain. Several groups of people stepped up to contribute during the Revolution that deserve a great
deal of recognition. Beginning with women, who in spite of their low position in society still served
in a variety of ways. Women took on the roles of men when men were away at war. There were
women who were bold enough to serve on the battlefield alongside men. They were determined to
prove that they were just as capable of doing what men could do. African Americans, both free and
enslaved, also served in the Continental Army. African Americans fought bravely and eagerly, as
some even ended up becoming heroes. They were willing to be a helping hand and would even lie to
be able to fight for America's independence as well as their own. Foreigners were another group
who supported America by providing trainers and leaders. Foreigners also supported America
financially to get the army the supplies it needed. Without the help or support of all these different
groups of people, America may not have won its independence. Despite the low position women
held in society, they participated in any way they could during the war. When their husbands were
away fighting, they took over their husbands' positions as weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths or
shipbuilders. Others transformed their homes into hospitals for the wounded, as explained in

General Wayne chose 1,200 prestigious soldiers from the army to attack at Stony Point. To make
sure no issues with the army's muskets occurred such as, accidental firing, or friendly fire incidents,
the troops were told not to load their muskets and to only use their bayonets to fight (Moran 1).
Many British soldiers were killed due to General Sir Henry Clinton and Lt. Colonel Johnston's poor

the fort at Stony Point was in their possession. Without Steuben's training with the bayonets, the
Continental Army wouldn't have achieved this victory. Steuben created a sanitation system that

everyone in his surroundings would be affected with the illness if it was contagious. At one point

Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Steuben, also known as Friedrich Von Steuben or

was one of those influential figures. He was famous for being a Prussian officer, writing the

Von Steuben's time as a prussian officer was very eventful. In the May of 1756 the Seven Years War

Ethical Arguments
Ethics is the study of what is morally right or wrong. In ethics, there are four main argumentative
point of views: relativism, consequentialism, deontology and virtue ethics. Each one has it's flaws,
and it's advantages.
RELATIVISM
Relativism is the belief that moral values are not absolute, but instead relative to whom is holding
the moral values. There are two branches of relativism. The first one is Cultural Relativism which is
the belief that one's culture defines what is morally right and wrong. One pro to this point of view, is
that cultural relativism doesn't have to define specific situations as right or wrong, right and wrong
situations are easily decided. A con to this belief is that any culture could be right, ... Show more

The two different types of Virtue ethics are Aristotle's Virtue ethics, and Aquinas' Virtue ethics.
Aristotle takes virtue ethics in a more broad statement, and thinks that a good person is someone
who does good things. A pro to this belief is that one with this view would have a desire to be a
good person. One con to Aristotle's Virtue ethics is that it does not recognize the results of
situations, so even if intentions are good, the results can have a negative impact. Aquinas thinks that
a good person pursues to do good things by abiding God's natural law. Most people have the same
life purposes as Aquinas' view, thus stating that the world is mostly full of good people. The con to

leaders were involved with Soldier development. Individual training increase despite eliminating
two companies in the regiment. On February 23, 1778, Baron von Steuben joined forces with the
Continental Army (Boatner, 1995). A German by birth, Steuben began to train Soldiers and
transform the Army. He took an abrasive approach to training Soldier. He did not speak English;
however, Steuben, Washington, and his leaders selected 100 candidates to receive training. These
men would serve as future leaders. This group of men were the first representatives for the new
profession (Boatner, 1995). General Washington then began training the troops. He developed the
training and drilled basic tasks that Soldiers and their leaders should know to function in every day
operations and trainers in their unit. Steuben was dedicated to the profession and possessed a strong
ability to influence Soldiers. He drilled with the Soldiers continually to provide

The Moral Principles Of The Army

  • 1. The Moral Principles Of The Army Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1–0 states, "living by and upholding the moral principles of the Army Ethic" is the foundation to our profession. An organization cannot survive if there are no foundation for morals. The organization will internally implode. This is a critical fact for the Army. Individuals that do not have a foundation that aligns with the Army's foundation is detrimental to the organization. The purpose for this short paper is to explore the fundamentals of our profession; examine the need for structure; how to return to basics of the profession; who needs to enforce standards; finally, implementing a culture change within the Army. Army leaders have categorized the four problems that currently plague the Army Established on July 14, 1775, United States Army emerged during the conflict between the French and Indians. The Army, created to fight and win our Nation's wars, has experienced its fair share of battle. July 4, 1776, marked a change that would require the Army's engagement. The Declaration of Independence, signed by 56 individuals from 13 colonies documented that day their high treason ("The Price", 2013). Every original signer and their family were now targets. These individuals, identified by the King of England, became the hunted. Many were tortured and killed. In 1776, Congress appointed George Washington as the Commander and Chief of the Army. Standards and regulatory guidance began developing shortly after Washington ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Native Americans and Slave Trade in America: The Story of... From the reading of chapter 1 and chapter 2 in "America: The Story of Us" by Kevin Baker, I highlighted three points of interest for my discussion assignment. The first is of the impressions the Native Americans had of the European's explorers in the New World. The second point of interest is about the slave trade in America. The last point of interest is about the Prussian–born military officer Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben. The Native American believe the early settlers to be harmless and capable of easily manipulated. As was the case when the English's settlers established a Jamestown settlement in the Chesapeake Bay. The Native Americans saw the European's explorers as "physically weak, sexually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another factor enabling the slave trade was a better nautical knowledge. An "understanding of the wind and ocean currents of the North and South Atlantics" (Eltis, 2007). Not having enough indenture servants from Europe and a dying Amerindian population made trading for African's slaves the best choose. The "agency" that supplied the slaves were the ruling tribe of the African's region. Slaves were either former prisoner of war or a person of criminal tendencies (Eltis, 2007). Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben or Baron von Steuben was a name every U.S. soldier must learn when studying to be a noncommissioned officer. It is a name associated with the answer to the study question "The Army received it's first real training from what former Prussian Officer at Valley Forge in the winter of 1778?" I am intrigued to learned of his discharge from the Prussian Army and his improvidence (Baker, 2010). Shortly after gaining the confidence of George Washington, he was entrusted with retraining the Continental Army. A task he relished because he loved caring for soldiers. "Steuben insisted that officers should put the needs of their men ahead of their own and that they should temper discipline with loving concern" (Lockhart, 2008). That mantra would eventually lead to the first official regulation of the U.S. Army. Imparted with the tactical proficiency of a modern army, the Continental Army fought ... • 3. Contributions In The Case Of Benedict Arnold's War Most espionage cases involve two things: a foreign connection and an insider threat. Many factors lead to a trusted individual having no alternative than betraying his or her own country. John Andre was the foreign connection in this instance, and Benedict Arnold being the insider threat that had no alternative but to commit treason and become the United States most famous traitor. Benedict Arnold had a laundry list of indicators that made him an attractive target to the likes of the British. Arnold was the second most important General in the American Army, and that type of person should get the praise they deserve, and Arnold did not receive that praise. Arnold had numerous battle victories, including Saratoga, possibly his most famous, but still felt like the Americans did not appreciate his value. On top of that, Arnold was not being paid for his efforts as a General in the Continental Army. Many spies and traitors in the history of the United States generally have financial troubles compounded among other indicators. When someone feels they are having financial troubles they look for another way to make a source of income and being a spy or traitor seems to be a method to accomplish that goal. If Benedict Arnold had been treated fairly and received proper compensation, both monetarily and respectfully, Andre never would have had the insider threat needed to accomplish his mission. The second reason the incident could have been prevented does not exist because the incident was prevented. Andre never got the defensive plans back to the British, and Arnold's treachery was stopped before the British had a chance to come to fruition. The British did have control of Arnold, and he could possibly detail the defenses of West Point, but by that time the Americans most likely had already augmented the defenses of West Point. If Arnold was released back to the Americans, Andre's life would have been spared. The British did not want to exchange Arnold for Andre because General Clinton did not want to discourage other defectors from coming forward with information beneficial to the British. The Americans would have had to work harder to make sure the British were not able to pull something over on them again. Andre ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The X Men Secretary : A Dual Synthesis Of Real Historical... My character, the X–Men Secretary, was a dual synthesis of real historical figures John Tyndall and Thomas Hirst. My character rose up from rather humble beginnings; he was raised a Catholic on a farm in Ireland, the sixth of eight surviving children, and attended public school (Driscoll, et al.). The Secretary tirelessly educated himself in the sciences during his time as a surveyor and mining engineer. When he finally decided to obtain a formal education, the English–Anglican doors of Cambridge and Oxford were closed to him because, though he had not practiced religion since his youth, he was an Irish Catholic on paper. As a result, he moved to Germany to complete a doctorate in physics in just under two years. The Secretary caught the attention of Sir Edward Sabine as a result of his research on magnetism – fictional work modeled after John Tyndall's – and was recognized and helped to secure a position in the Royal Society. This session was my character's "final year of a three year term as member of the Royal Society Council" with the position of secretary (Driscoll, et al.). This position gave my character "considerable power" as I worked with the A–Men Secretary and General Sabine to map out agendas for every game session, an ability which both the General and myself used to our advantage a number of times (Driscoll, et al.). We would set the agenda and ask if the others had any qualms with it, and several times we shifted speeches into more favorable time slots based ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Discuss The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Colonists... Going into the American Revolution the British and American Colonists had many advantages. They also had some disadvantages that were usually countered by the other's advantages. I will talk about each of their advantages and then discuss their disadvantages. The British had many advantages going into the American Revolution. One advantage is that they had a professional army that was well trained. By having a well–trained army they had a better chance of winning the battles. The British troops were already in the colonies, the most important places being the port cities such as New York and Boston. The British had a veteran officer corps. Their officers had already fought in the French and Indian War. Supply foundations, by having soldiers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because the colonists didn't have a real fighting force, there were very few well trained soldiers, and even fewer professional soldiers on their side. The British were much better fighters than they were. The colonists did not have a navy at all, so the British were able to keep sending ships for supplies and they had control of the seas with their strong navy. The colonists had trouble finding other nations to trade with because they did not have a vast treasury and the other nations were fearful of not being paid back if the colonists lost the war. The colonists did not have a strong central government, which meant that decisions took a long time and many of the different colonies disagreed. • 6. Business Economics | Peter F. Drucker is the management scholar. He is thought to be the establishing father of current management. Peter Drucker, whose life crossed the previous century (1909 – 2005), was an exceedingly instructed native of the world: an innovative soul who composed thirty–nine books including numerous fantastic chips away at business management. He was a man of numerous parts: a sharp eyewitness, a long lasting understudy, an educator, mentor of eminent corporate pioneers, and the organizer of an official school in Claremont, California, that bears his name. Peter Ferdinand Drucker was an author, management advisor and college teacher. His written work concentrated on management related writing. Peter Drucker made well known the term ... The point when Peter Drucker, then a trainee bank assistant in Hamburg, initially contemplated the works of Sören Kierkegaard (1813 – 1855): the existentialist savant, theologist, religious writer and advocate of the Idea of Christianity, Kierkegaard was still moderately obscure. Drucker was captivated by the philosophy embraced by this philosophical independent, in particular, to utilize logic as an instrument for reflecting upon Christianity. Kierkegaard suspected that people existed in an element relationship as both profound creatures and individuals from society. As per Kierkegaard, it is conviction that instills our otherworldly existence with the conviction that we are not the only one, with importance, and with a flat out perspective, in particular God. The distinguishment on one hand that wickedness is a piece of human instinct and on the other that a sufferable coexistence is still conceivable got to be natural to Peter Drucker's own rationality. This gathering of Peter F. Drucker's papers investigates the crossing point between society, governmental issues, and financial aspects. Notwithstanding this grand objective, be that as it may, the papers themselves stay sensible, very meaningful, and brimming with stories and thoughts that make us ponder the business world around us. The dominant part of these papers were composed in the 1960s, and in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Invention Of Nature By Andrea Wulf Alexander Von Humboldt was a Prussian naturalist whose work has helped shape and define our modern understanding of nature. He used enlightenment rationalism to navigate his way through life and his deep connection to his natural environment inspired a visionary movement in ushering out the monotheistic creationist worldview. "Humboldt's books, diaries and letters reveal a visionary, a thinker far ahead of his time. He invented isotherms...discovered the magnetic equator...came up with the idea of vegetation and climate zones that snake across the globe...and revolutionized the way we see the natural world." (Invention of Nature, 5). Although his work was extensive, author of 'The Invention of Nature, Andrea Wulf suggests that his work has largely been forgotten due to his polymath approach of including art, history, poetry and politics that made him unfavorable. While Humboldt gave us our concept of nature itself, "the irony is that Humboldt's views have become so self–evident that we have largely forgotten the man behind them." However, although his work individual work may be overlooked, Humboldt's success in making science more accessible work and as a result, his legacy lives on as the source of inspiration for many influential thinkers throughout history. One of the most influential thinkers inspired by Humboldt, who helps us remember Humboldt's legacy is John Muir. Inspired by Von Humboldt's travels, Muir wanted to explore the world just like Von Humboldt. He possessed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sapir-Worf Hypothesis: Linguistic Determinism and... Sapir–Worf Hypothesis: Linguistic Determinism and Linguistic Relativity The romantic idealism of the late eighteenth century, as encountered in the views of Johann Herder (1744–1803) and Wilhelm von Humboldt (I 762–1835), placed great value on the diversity of the world's languages and cultures. The tradition was taken up by the American linguist and anthropologist Edward Sapir (1884–1939) and his pupil Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897–1941), and resulted in a view about the relation between language and thought which was widely influential in the middle decades of this century. The "Sapir–Whorf hypothesis," as it came to be called, combines two principles. The first is known as linguistic determinism: it states that language determines the ... This seems alien to someone used to thinking in English, but, Whorf argues, it is no stranger than English–speakers having one word for many kinds of snow, in contrast to Eskimo, where there are different words for falling snow, snow on the ground, snow packed hard like ice, slushy snow (cf. English slush), and so on. In Aztec, a single word (with different endings) covers an even greater range of English notions––snow, cold, and ice. When more abstract notions are considered (such as time, duration, velocity), the differences become yet more complex: Hopi, for instance, lacks a concept of time seen as a dimension; there are no forms corresponding to English tenses, but there are a series of forms which make it possible to talk about vari– ous durations, from the speaker's point of view. It would be very difficult, Whorf argues, for a Hopi and an English physicist to understand each other's thinking, given the major differences between the languages. Examples such as these made the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis very plausible; but in its strongest form it is unlikely to have any adherents now. The fact that successful translations between languages can be made is a major argument against it, as is the fact that the conceptual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Roles Of The Drummer Boys Of The American Revolution Will Partridge Drummer Boys of the American Revolution Drummer Boys played a valuable role in the war. They supported the troops by: 1) completing camp chores to free the men for more difficult tasks, and 2) They played duty calls and signals to tell the soldiers what to do during combat and played marching music to boost troop morale. 3) They helped sustain order and discipline. The drummer boys were from the thirteen colonies. They were often enlisted by their parents or if they were a slave by their master. Some slaves volunteered so that they could earn their freedom. The drummer boys also enlisted because they were very patriotic. The age range of the drummer boys was sixteen to twenty although there younger drummers who were twelve to fourteen years old. The drummer boys did camp chores to free the adults for harder work and also did many things adults did. The boys gathered firewood and chopped wood, guarded prison coastlines guarded prisoners dug latrines waited on officers slaughtered livestock hauled small wagons built defensive works spied on enemies carried messages marched for miles foraged for food. Drums are loud so the soldiers could hear them during battle and they were the way to communicate. The history of using drums goes back to early, Switzerland. Music was for the morale of the troops. Up to now, several strategies have been undertaken to modify alkaline titanate such as noble metal deposition, heterojunction formation and incorporation of metal ions into titanate. Recently, Wang et al. reported the synthesis of Na–K2Ti6O13/g–C3N4 composite material and tested their photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange under both simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation. Until now, no one has reported the surface modification of alkaline titanate using transition metals grafting with enhanced photocatalytic under visible light source. The surface modification has done so far with noble metals, which are highly expensive and limits the possibility for practical applications. The surface modification with ubiquitous metals has gained much attention as they avoid the high cost noble metals. The grafting with transition metal nanocluster promotes the multi–electron reduction reaction of oxygen molecule and ultimately enhances the photocatalytic activity. In this study, we report for the first time Cu(II)–nanocluster grafted Na–K2Ti6O13 nanobelts using molten salt followed by impregnation technique. The modification with Cu(II) cluster could enhance the light harvesting ability of Na–K2Ti6O13 to perform under visible light source. Often it is done because of or to encourage a feeling of affinity or connection. I will be using this word to express what I see as the systematic and often unconscious blurring of the lines between idol and idolater. Whilst hero worship is not necessarily negative, in cases where a person projects their own values or beliefs onto a vastly different person or group it can have negative repercussions. In the Romantic era, projection took the form of Romantics pressing their own modern views and values onto popular ancient figures and ideas were ancient. This created a cycle of populist hero worship and historical discourse that led to such absurdities as the common Victorian claim that Sappho was as a Headmistress of a Girls finishing school. ... Across Europe, schools had introduced new education models emphasising language, both ancient and modern. In addition, curriculums modelled on Greek forms intended to develop character and values were widespread. To satisfy the demand for a more authoritative and restricted community, classical study became specialised in the University of Gottingen, which established an Altertumswissenschaft (science of antiquity) course. This collated the many aspects of study or appreciation of ancient culture into one degree – inaccessible to many. What had been a disparate field open to amateur enthusiasts and professional linguists or theologians alike became a more rigid and dogmatic expert community. Both in the books, The Humboldt Current: Nineteenth–Century Exploration and the Roots of American Environmentalism and On a Farther Shore the Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson, the authors are trying to prove that the individuals whom they wrote about deserve a place in the ongoing narrative of Environmentalism. Alexander Von Humboldt and Rachel Carson showed how their subjects were led to a life of environmentalism by their passion. Whether it was from a love of the water or a love to explore, both of these individuals were led down a road of environmentalism. Although their accomplishments are completely different, it does not mean that one is more significant than the other. The fact that they had different results can easily be explained by the different times in which these two individuals were alive and active. Humboldt's journey did not begin until 1799, which was 108 years before Carson was even born. They had different passions, which led to different results, but in the end, they were both incredibly significant. Aaron Sachs (author of The Humboldt Current) does a great job of describing the incredibly interesting journeys that Humboldt had. From his trip to Venezuela to the United States, and everything in between, Sachs painted a picture of an explorer on a mission to study new land, to discover new things, and to develop ideas about these new areas and pass those ideas on to the rest of the world. He dropped out of school and started working with his cousins, but he would often leave to and join the army. He went off on a bad route when his parents died because he went from business deals to sort of smuggling; however, when he heard of lexington and concord he rushed over and tried to get in on the action. He was then bullied and such by his fellow generals. What events can define this person as a hero or villain? It is believed that Benedict Arnold was a great general in the revolutionary war. He fought beside George Washington in the continental army. When he was a general for the continental army he had a couple of successful raids and took over british forts. He was also promoted to colonel by Benjamin church. He was doing great during his time with the continental army and his comrades trusted him, and he was praised for his successful attacks. Even though, a couple of his companions did bully and mess with him, they still found him useful when it came to taking over british forts and achieving bountiful attacks towards the british. He even got hurt during an attack on the british. George Washington sent Arnold to attack Quebec where he hurt his knee. As a result, his attack in Quebec failed miserably. Being a math education major, I have come into contact with Gauss' work quite a few times. He contributed greatly to the different areas of mathematics like linear algebra, calculus, and number theory. However, his mother intervened and sent him to school when he was seven. His teacher, Büttner, was a cold–hearted teacher who loved proving to his students how ignorant they were (Bell 221). At the age of ten, Gauss "discovered" a formula that would change his future forever. Büttner asked his students to add up the numbers between one and a hundred. He figured this would keep his students busy all day. However, Gauss noticed a pattern. Without anyone showing him the formula [n(n+1)]/2, Gauss derived it and solved the problem quickly (Burton 510). Büttner was so impressed by this that he bought Gauss a math book and had his assistant, Johann Bartels, work with the young boy (Bell 222). The friendship that developed between Bartels and Gauss led Bartels to introduce Gauss to Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand, the Duke of Brunswick (Bell 224). Contrary to popular belief, he never chopped down a cherry tree, and people should find it appalling that we need to make up a lie about one of the most honest men in our country's history. His character was not inherited. He sought after every ounce of his integrity from childhood through adulthood. This is why the Revolution did not make George Washington. The Revolution revealed him. He also learned the value of hard work at a very young age. At 16, he was already surveying land and would go on to survey in Ohio. He also loved agriculture and the science behind it. In his library at Mount Vernon, he kept the most updated books on agricultural techniques. He was so eager to learn about the latest agricultural advances that a historian actually called him our nation's first scientific farmer. This experience helped him in battle when it was necessary for him to try methods that were largely unconventional at the time. In 1754, Washington became a Lieutenant colonel in the British military. It was during this time that he fought against the Indians and the French. These long years of battle also saw his life spared multiple times, which led some of his followers to believe that he could not be killed. However, Washington was quick to assure them that this was not the case. Shortly after these battles, Washington returned home where he married a widow named Martha Curtis. Essay "Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about." – Benjamin Lee Whorf Introduction The idea that language affects the way we remember things and the way we perceive the world was first introduced by the influential linguists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf (Harley, 2008). The central idea of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, today more commonly known as the linguistic relativity hypothesis, holds that "each language embodies a worldview, with quite different languages embodying quite different views, so that speakers of different languages think about the world in quite different ways" (Swoyer, 2003). Previous research by Malotki (1983) indicated that this finding was never approved as reliable data. This dilemma will be analyzed later on in reference to a contemporary study consisting of English and Mandarin native speakers and their ensuing concepts of time. The Concept of Time in English and Mandarin Research by Lera Boroditsky (2001) posed many interesting questions regarding linguistic diversity and the resultant interplay between language and thought: whether linguistic diversity stimulates different ways of thinking, whether learning new languages changes the way one thinks, whether bilingual and multilingual people think differently when speaking different languages. Clark (2003) maintains that although language does not indicate a complete map of consciousness or thought, it is at least a "representational map" that varies across languages. Spatial metaphors are used to specify these different aspects of time in our experience with the world (Boroditsky, 2000). Examples of spatial metaphors for time include looking forward to something, falling behind schedule, or planning ahead. Results from Boroditsky's study indicated that there were indeed differences in spatial metaphors employed between English and Mandarin; while in English front/back terms are predominantly used to conceptualize time, Mandarin speakers also use vertical metaphors as well as front/back terms to ... Many major wars were taking place, and they were known as the American Revolution when referred to as one. She supported the war effort and was read out of her meetings because of that support. There is no concrete proof of Darragh's stories, but a family member brought her memorable actions to life. That member was Darragh's daughter, Ann, who recounted the story years after it played out. Since Ann's testimonies have some information that does not fit with other accounts, some historians have dismissed it as a fake tale. The British made Darragh move out of her house so that they could use that area. Lydia wanted to stay because she had two children to take care of. She decided to ask Lord Howe for permission to remain where she was. On her way, she met up with a British officer who surprisingly turned out to be a second cousin, Captain Barrington, from Ireland. Due to Barrington, Darragh was allowed to stay in her home while keeping a room available for British officers to hold meetings. Paideia as Bildung in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment ABSTRACT: There have been many interpretations of Bildung in the history of German philosophy, from the Medieval mystics to the secularization of the Enlightenment. Wilhelm von Humboldt's work at the end of the 18th century is a good example. He placed the idea of Bildung at the center of his work because it was rooted in a dynamic, transforming idea of the natural and human worlds while also being oriented toward a model of balance and perfection. Von Humboldt's interpretation of modernity is characterized by a strong emphasis on change as well as the need to find criteria for guiding such a transformation that has no intrinsic or predetermined end. The original meaning of bilden, as the Deutsches Wörterbuch by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm states, is that of a plastic activity on the sensory level and means giving shape, producing a certain object abiding to the rules which preside over the Art. In this case bilden is a synonym for gestalten and formieren. But the relationship of reproduction, and therefore of resemblance with respect to an image must be added to this , and this addition to an Urbild pushes bilden well beyond the pure and simple formation of an object and gives rise to the complex relationship between model and copy, original and reproduction which implies a very different approach to the question. The "War to Death" decree creates a furor, and the combats and indecisive battles, won or lost, follow one upon the other with increasing rapidity. Despite important victories, Bolívar as well as General Santiago Mariño (who had previously liberated the eastern areas of the nation) find themselves obliged to give way in the face of a more numerous adversary led by the royalist José Tomás Boves. Boves emerges victorious from the La Puerta battle (June of 1814), and the patriots are forced to evacuate Caracas. A massive emigration towards the east takes place. There, Bolívar and Mariño see their authority challenged by their own companions at arms. The Liberator finds again fraternal asylum in Nueva Granada, where he intervenes with some measures of success in internal political struggles which enable the city of Bogotá to find a place in the newly established United Provinces. In May of 1815, in Cartagena, Bolívar resigns his command to avoid the outbreak of civil war. In 1816, with Alexandre's help, he returned to Venezuela and their forces seized Angostura after beating the counter–attack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descartes Second Meditations On The First Philosophy In the "Second Meditation," of "Meditations on the First Philosophy," Descartes contends that, even if a "malicious deceiver" was purposefully attempting to trick him, one thing is "necessarily true". "I am...only a thing that thinks...a thinking thing." From this, Descartes asks, "What else am I?" His answer is that he is not just a body, or a "...thin vapour which permeates the limbs..." He is something, which is identical with his awareness of himself yet, what that is, he is not sure. Accordingly, Descartes can only make judgments about the things known to him, because judgment is thinking, and thus, he knows that he exists. This, for Descartes, is the first thing he can be certain of, that he does exist, as something that thinks. Thus is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There would be some concurrence that the object has certain properties. That the water bottle is made out of a metallic material, that the water bottle is cylindrical in shape, that the water bottle is red in color. Several groups of people stepped up to contribute during the Revolution that deserve a great deal of recognition. Beginning with women, who in spite of their low position in society still served in a variety of ways. Women took on the roles of men when men were away at war. There were women who were bold enough to serve on the battlefield alongside men. They were determined to prove that they were just as capable of doing what men could do. African Americans, both free and enslaved, also served in the Continental Army. African Americans fought bravely and eagerly, as some even ended up becoming heroes. They were willing to be a helping hand and would even lie to be able to fight for America's independence as well as their own. Foreigners were another group who supported America by providing trainers and leaders. Foreigners also supported America financially to get the army the supplies it needed. Without the help or support of all these different groups of people, America may not have won its independence. Despite the low position women held in society, they participated in any way they could during the war. When their husbands were away fighting, they took over their husbands' positions as weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths or shipbuilders. Others transformed their homes into hospitals for the wounded, as explained in Document 2. Document 2 also describes how hundreds of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To make sure no issues with the army's muskets occurred such as, accidental firing, or friendly fire incidents, the troops were told not to load their muskets and to only use their bayonets to fight (Moran 1). Many British soldiers were killed due to General Sir Henry Clinton and Lt. Colonel Johnston's poor planning and other British soldiers were captured. Wayne sent a message to Washington telling him the fort at Stony Point was in their possession. Without Steuben's training with the bayonets, the Continental Army wouldn't have achieved this victory. Steuben created a sanitation system that followed throughout history for nearly a century and a half. Before Steuben arrived nothing was sanitary or generally organized. Huts and tents were not organized, they let animals rot when they died, and there was no arrangement of camp layout. At the end of the day men went into whatever hut or tent they pleased without thinking of the consequences. If another man in the tent was ill, everyone in his surroundings would be affected with the illness if it was contagious. At one point while the army faced these excruciating conditions, about one in four soldiers was ill (Davidson 184). By creating a plan and organizing the huts and tents, illness decreased. The women also contributed to helping the sick and wounded. However, without Steuben organizing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Muilenburg 1standard noun ˈstan–dərd : a level of quality, achievement, etc., that is considered acceptable or desirable 1discipline noun ˈdi–sə–plən : a way of behaving that shows a willingness to obey rules or orders Looking back to the birth of our Nation and actions at Valley Forge in 1778, it is readily apparent that our Revolutionary Forces were little more than civilians fighting against a highly disciplined British Army. General Washington's men had endured many hardships and losses at the hands of the British. General Washington recognized the need for a more disciplined force in order to defeat the British and enlisted the aid of Baron Friedrich von Steuben. Von Steuben wrote drill movements and regulations at night and taught them the following day. In writing, he clearly outlined the standards which governed the movements regarding company drill. In his teaching the very next day, he instilled discipline by training the men to respond without hesitation. The history of standards and discipline and the relationship with The Army Profession were forever joined in the first Army Field Manual "The Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States", which we now refer to as the "Blue Book". One con to Aristotle's Virtue ethics is that it does not recognize the results of situations, so even if intentions are good, the results can have a negative impact.
