Spacs and the un sustainable development goals
1. A Series on SPACs and the UN Sustainable Development Goals,
Inclusive Impact Investing opportunities for every Global Goal!
SPACs, Special Purpose Acquisition Companies, are decades old but soared in 2020. Financial markets were
fibrillating and halting at the same time from March 2020 onwards resulting in K shaped investment trends:
Health, Tech & ESG boomed and extractive capitalism such as fossil fuel, transportation, airlines & finance bust.
Catalyzing climate & economy transformation action by governments, companies & investors, large & small.
SPACs offer various opportunities for companies and
investors as attractive alternatives with fast (direct
listing as opposed to IPO’s), cheap access to (growth,
transformation, exit) capital.
It is a blank check based on reputation or theme(s).
2020 was a record year with $170 billion. 2021 has
already achieved likewise numbers with direct listings
(Refinitiv). Of these direct listings, almost half are an US
affair, adding to SPACs inclusive investment character.
As investing at eg NASDAC costs a mere 50US$ct on
competitive platforms and launch prices are around
10US$. There are also aspects of SPACs that potential
investors should take into account concerning future
growth expectationstransparency, and the hype itself: is
it a bubble?. Read e.g. the Motley Fool on pro’s &
cons’.
I dive into the wonderful world of SPACs and their
potential to accelerate impact, specifically the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals. I will work with this Global Goals & Impact Tech visual I
designed a while back. It highlights the potential for exiting Tech Growth Stock investing next to debt & largecap
Dividend Darlings that embrace the Global Goals in their Sustainability or ESG policy & innovative financing (Green
Bonds, Social Bonds, Sustainability Linked Bonds)

2. This list of potential inclusive impact investing SPACs is not investment advice. I am a Contemporary Political Historian (Drs @ University of Groningen,
Propedeuse @ UniUtrecht) with a Masters of Arts degree in Alternative Development Strategies at the Institute of Social Studies part of Erasmus University
Rotterdam. As far as impact investing concerns, I am an autodidact with some good advice from Dad and an introductory course to investing offered by
ABNAMRO Bank in The Netherlands. I started studying & practicing impact investing about 10 years ago. I certainly did not buy all of the profiled SPACs,
sometimes as little as 5 stocks, sometimes a bit more: guru’s or filled with a number of edtech stocks and paying out excellent dividends. No Warrants or Units.
UN Global Goal 1: No Poverty FinTech
One of 2020 biggest SPACs launched was Hedosophia V IPOE ‘to take fintech start-up Social Finance Inc (SoFi)
public’. SoFi is A Growing Fintech Company and ‘A Lender With A Brand’. The SocialCapitalHedosophia website
states it’s partnership ‘mission is to create an alternative path to a traditional IPO for disruptive and agile
technology companies to achieve their long-term objectives and overcome key deterrents to becoming
public’. Social Finance is an online lender offering personal loans, mortgages, and student loan refinancing, as
well as newer products and services like stock trading, a robo-advisor, and a credit card.

UN Global Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Natural Order Acquisition Company NOAC website states …’it is our intention to pursue prospective targets that
are focused on technologies and products related to sustainable plant-based food and beverages, alternative
protein, and ingredients. More specifically, our target market includes companies that use plant-based,
cell-based or precise fermentation technologies to develop food products that eliminate animals from the
food supply chain. We refer to all these technologies herein as “plant-based” or “alternative.”

3. https://www.livekindly.co/successful-vegan-food-company-ipo/ ‘The (NOAC) blank check company is the fourth plant-based company to go public and
is the first plant-based SPAC. Plant-based companies have widely outperformed the S&P 500 in 2020, rising 50 to 100 percent through Nov 11 versus 9 percent
performance of the S&P 500’. AJH: The LiveKindly Collaborative is a food company aiming to superscale plant foods, #impactinvestee.
Global Goal 3 Health & Wellbeing
Lots of choice here with 93 active Healthcare SPACs according to https://spactrack.net/activespacs/ and 17 closed
Healthcare SPACs https://spactrack.net/closedspacs/ including Jamba Juice company bought by Focus Brands.
As Jamba serves fruit smoothies, vegetable soups and natural superfood boosters in it’s own and licensed stores.
Spacktracks view on healthcare is quite holistic :). Since lifestyle is 80% of our health(crisis) I agree!
I could have also portraided Jamba in Global Goals Zero Hunger as nutritious food, Target 2.1.
Getting back to Health & Wellbeing and foregoing the obvious biotech SPACs, very cool developing vaccines,
treatments & cures) how about something as new & cool as AI 4 Health? #DirectListing
CM Life Science CMLF ... merged, combined with Sema4, a Disruptive AI-driven Genomic & Clinical Data Platform
Company... "This transaction is a significant milestone for Sema4," …."The additional resources will allow us to
greatly accelerate our business plans organically and inorganically, developing and bringing in more
cutting-edge precision model solutions across multiple disease areas.

Global Goal 4 Education & Lifelong Learning
My first ever SPAC was Suro Capital SSSS. I bought it as it held stock I was eying before it’s Direct Listing (DL):
Palantir, Security Tech. Immediately after the DL the price dropped as Suro exited PLNT to cash in.... But apart from
diversifying from the DL/IPO risk, it had > 20 holdings. I was amazed to see privately held EdTechs such as
Coursera & Course Hero, Impact FinTech Aspriration. Or Sustainability Partners Scales #Susty processes.
And amazing dividends. Also Canabis which I dont like, but most funds contain unattractive stuff you do not want to
own or make a profit off… #NotAllDutchiesAreDruggiesOrThinkDrugsAreGreat

Gobal Goal 5 Gender Equality
I am eying the Queen’s Gambit, named after the movie, GMBT & II led by an All Female Team seeking
disruptive Sustainable Economic Growth, Development & Prosperity #SDG8 #SDG10.
On the SPACs website it states that the ‘’Queen’s Gambit offers a fundamentally differentiated approach through the
diverse set of perspectives of its 100% female-led management team and board’’. They come ‘From the management
team of Colle Capital Partners: a global, opportunistic, early stage technology venture fund’ (FinTech, Healtcare..)

Global Goal 6 Water & Sanitation
Here I am going a bit chauvinist and choose a Dutch SPAC, the ESG CORE listed on Amsterdam NYSE. It eyes
unique #water & #green #energy transition #technology opportunities in Europe. ESG CORE Investments is
a subsidiary of Dutch family-owned sustainable investment firm Infestos. They are hands-on, want (controllling)
majority share etc. My bank ABNAMRO ran it.
#SweetWater #SmartEnergy

The Dutch have centuries of expertise on water & finance management resulted in Wind Mills, Polderen, Delta works, Land
(re)clamation & Creation in The Netherlands (abroad: Palmtree Island Dubai, Hong Kong Airport). Impact investing pioneer
ASN Bank Water Technology fund, and Dutch institutionals focus on investing in water eg the EIB first Blue Bond. Enough
with my love for Dutch Impact Investing. (I live in Malta: absence makes the heart grow fonder).
