2. The digestive system is a group of
organs working together to
convert food into energy and basic
nutrients to feed the entire body.
Food passes through a long tube
inside the body known as the
alimentary canal. Alimentary
canal consists of :
•Mouth
•Oesophagus
•Stomach
•Small Intestine
•Large Intestine
•Anus

4. Digestion begins in the oral
cavity:
Digestion of food begins in the
oral cavity. Food is masticated by
teeth and moistened by saliva
secreted from the salivary glands.
Enzymes in the saliva begin to
digest starches and fats. With the
help of the tongue, the resulting
bolus is moved into the esophagus
by swallowing.
5. The esophagus is a hollow
muscular tube that transports
saliva, liquids, and foods from
the mouth to the stomach.
Peristaltic movements of
oesophagus allows the
movement of food. These are
wavelike contractions and
relaxations of the oesophagus.
6. In the stomach, food is further
broken apart through a process of
heuristic churning and is
thoroughly mixed with a digestive
fluid, composed chiefly of
hydrochloric acid, and other
digestive enzymes to further
denature proteins. The parietal
cells of the stomach also secrete a
compound, intrinsic factor which
is essential in the absorption of
vitamin B-12.
7. Small Intestine is the site of
complete digestion. It recieves the
secretions of liver and pancreas.
Bile salts help in the breakdown
of fat. Pancreatic enzyme trypsin
digests proteins and lipase for
fats. The walls of small intestine
secretes intestinal juice. The
enzymes convert proteins to amino
acids, carbohydrates into glucose
and fats into glycerol. The Villi
takes the absorbed food to each
and every cell in the body.
8. The unabsorbed food is sent into
the large intestine where more villi
absorb water from this material.
The rest of the waste material is
removed from the body via the
anus which is known as egestion.
The exit of this waste material is
regulated by the anal sphincter.
