7. All of the energy we
consume is from our
planet’s resources!!!!
8. History
It is important that American citizens make
an effort to conserve energy. Individuals
should do this because their environment
is that of future generations as well. That
environment can only be as clean as the
prior generations leave it. We are the prior
generation.
9. The issue of gas conservation can be
broken down into many small facets with
alarming facts and projections that could
prompt anyone to action.
• Rising cost of natural resources
• American inability to refine energy
• The onset of global warming
• Unhealthy living conditions
10. • Unlike the majority, some individuals choose to
ignore the facts out of fear or a sheer disregard
for the future. Even those people however,
cannot deny the rise in the cost of our natural
resources.
• In 1978, the price of American gas averaged
sixty five cents per gallon; by last year, that price
had risen to one hundred and ninety two cents
per gallon.
• Recent natural disasters, such as hurricane
Katrina and Rita, have driven the price of this
precious energy source to two hundred and
ninety three cents per gallon
11. • Americans consume 21 million barrels of
oil per day.
• U.S. refineries only have the capability to
refine 17 million barrels per day.
12. • The destruction of the ozone layer, resulting in a
phenomenon known as global warming.
• Global warming began in 1790 at the onset of
the industrial revolution that was characterized
by the emergence of factories and steam
engines that began to spew greenhouse gases
into the air we breathe.
• Before this event, the effects of humans on their
environment was little more than the waste they
produced, however many societies would soon
put scars on their environment that will likely
never be erased.
13. • Without some kind of unified effort to address this issue,
global warming will run its course. Although the outcome
of this process is unknown, it is suspected that it will be
detrimental to future generations.
• Right now Americans produce 6.6 tons of greenhouse
gases per person per year and eighty-two percent of
these emissions are a result of the combustion engine.
• Being on the top of the list of global warming polluters
has put one hundred and seventeen million Americans
living in places where the air is unhealthy to breathe.
14. For these reasons, along with countless
others, there should be a concerted effort
to utilize all current energy saving methods
as well as continue to pursue new and
innovative ways to protect and prolong our
environment.
15. • The future promises cleaner energy
sources and more options that will allow
individuals to leave a healthy environment
for future generations.
• Ethanol fuel is one of the cleaner energy
sources that is here today and is being
used in many parts of the country.
• Advances in solar power are bringing that
form of energy closer to being a feasible
form of energy.
16. • Modern technology has given individuals
options.
• Newly introduced hybrid cars utilize the
traditional forms of energy, oil and gas, but have
added electricity that puts these cars’ yield per
gallon off the charts
• American car manufacturers have already
added energy-saving components to their cars
making it easier for today’s car buyer to do
his/her part.
• If individuals are not able to take advantage of
cars with the latest energy saving technology,
they can still utilize carpooling, park-and-ride
and transit systems.
18. A NEED TO CONSERVE
LIVE CLOSER TO WORK
CAMPAIGN
19. What is more important?
• University of Houston requires 3 credit
hours of Visual and Performing Arts.
• Why not require 3 credit hours on
environmental awareness?
24. THE COURSE
• Should contain several chapters on the
importance of living near ones place of
employment.
• Should be required at all public institutions
for all majors before one can graduate.
25. CO2
• The U.S. emitts 1/5 of the worlds
greenhouse gases. (EPA, 2000)
• Researches have stated the concentration
of CO2 would be 30-150% higher by 2100
if major steps are not taken. (EPA, 2000)
29. For the Younger Years
An effort to incorporate energy
conservation into education would not be
complete unless a program was created to
teach the youth of the country, particularly
in the elementary and middle schools.
30. • This program would consist of useful tips
to conserve energy in the home simple
enough for young students to grasp, such
as turning of a light when they leave the
room.
• The program would also have a
component to allow students to learn
about the way their families use energy.
31. Students would be given a workbook
including a worksheet about their families
usage. Then they would learn about ways
to reduce those levels.
32. • Also included in this program would be
education about renewable natural
resources. Demonstrations on how the
sunlight and wind can be turned into
energy would be sure the capture the
interest of the students.
33. Students could also be taken on field trips
as a part of the program to learn about
different ways that energy is produced in
their areas. One possible option would be
local power plants, refineries, or coal
mines. These types of trips would differ
depending on the area.
34. By creating a program that requires the
students to learn about different methods
of energy conservation it encourages their
minds to grow with eco-friendly ideas. It
also however pulls their parents into the
program and gives them new ideas to
contemplate as well.
37. Issue:
• With the rising competition for jobs, it is hard to be able
to choose the specific location of your job. This
presents an issue when you have two working parents
whose jobs are on two opposite ends of town. Where
do they move then?
• Everyone wants their children to have the best
education! Because of this many families desire to
move to an area in which the schools have high
ratings. This does not allow people the same
opportunity to receive the best education offered.
38. Will institutions allow college
students to take an Environmental
Awareness class in place of a
Visual and Performing Arts Class?
Is it Feasible?
39. Yes, it’s feasible!
• Visual and Performing Art classes in Elementary,
Middle School and High School are all seen as
optional electives and are viewed by society more as a
personal interest or talent that one pursues. Taking a
music, theater, or art class will only give us a better
appreciation for the subject being taught, but it does
not change our ACTIONS. An environmental
awareness class provides the possibility to change the
COURSE of one’s action in a positive manner. So it’s
more productive to require students to take a class on
Environmental Awareness versus one in Visual and
Performing Arts because it’s not just changing our
thoughts, it’s changing our actions!
40. By implementing an environmental
awareness program for children in
elementary and middle schools, will
this decrees the amount of energy
usage in the USA?
IS IT FEASIBLE?
41. Yes, it’s feasible!
• This would be very effective because not only
is it targeting children but it’s also targeting
their parents.
• Another reason that it is feasible is because it
is reaching a generation at a younger age. It’s
easier to change the habits of a child than it is
to change the habits an older generation, who
are set in their ways and they have a routine
way of doing things, making it harder for them
to adapt to change.
