AIT has been ranked among
the best universities in the
world in three disciplines,
according to the QS Top
Universities 2016 Rankings
by Subject released on 21
March 2016. Further, AIT’s
faculty has also been ranked
240 in the field of Engineer-
ing and Technology.

QS has rankedAIT among the top 151-200 universities in the world
in the field of Civil and Structural Engineering. In the field of Envi-
ronmental Sciences, AIT is ranked among the global top 201-250,
while in Computer Science and Information Systems, it is ranked
among the top 351-400 universities in the world.
“The rankings reaffirm our global standing, and they reinforce our
status as a premier international institute based in Thailand,” AIT
President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai said. Besides emerging
near the top in three subjects across the globe, AIT is also ranked
among the top five universities in Thailand in 14 out of the 36 sub-
jects that were evaluated by QS. “AIT’s performance is remarkable
considering the fact that it has even been ranked in subjects where
it does not have a dedicated field of study, but only offers them as
minor courses. This is a solid indicator of the interdisciplinary nature
of its education and research,” Prof. Worsak added. The QS Ranking
by Subject (2016) is based on four indicators — academic reputa-
tion, employer reputation, citations per paper and H-index citations.

AIT'S FOUNDING FATHERS
Dr. Puey Ungphakorn
AIT's Research Recognition
is the Best Gift for Birth
Centenary Celebration of
Legendary Institute Founder
Dr. Puey Ungphakorn
Emeritus Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), H.E. Dr.
Thanat Khoman passed away on 3 March 2016.
He was 102.
A legendary public figure, Dr. Thanat served at
variouspositionsincludingDeputyPrimeMinister
of Thailand, Foreign Minister of Thailand,
Chairman of the UN Economic Commission for
Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), Ambassador to
the United States, and Chairman of the Democrat
Party. He was the third and the longest serving
Chairman of AIT’s Board of Trustees, and was
bestowed the title of Emeritus Chairman.
H.E. Dr. Thanat Khoman was Thailand's Foreign
Minister when he signed an agreement on behalf
of the Royal Thai Government with Lt. Gen. Jesus
Vargas, Secretary General of SEATO, to host the
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on October
25, 1967. Later in 1975, H.E. Dr. Thanat became
the third Chairman of the AIT Board of Trustees
succeeding Dr. Puey Ungphakorn and Dr. Oscar
Mapua. He remained in this office from 1975
until 1996. AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-
Nukulchai, while condoling his death stated: “In
recognition of his valuable contributions to the
Institute, H.E. Dr. Thanat Khoman was bestowed
with the AIT Chairman Emeritus title, which he
continued to hold until his passing away.”
Emeritus Chairman of AIT
Board of Trustees H.E. Dr.
Thanat Khoman passes away
While the world marked the 100th Anniversary of Dr.
Puey Ungphakorn’s birth on March 9, 1916, the Asian
Institute of Technology (AIT) joined UNESCO, Thai-
land and the world in celebrating the enormous life ac-
complishments of the man who was so instrumental to
its modern day success.
Thailand’s legendary academician and public servant
once dreamt that his country would be home to re-
nowned research intensive institutes striving for sci-
entific breakthroughs of benefit to society. At AIT – an
international institute near and dear to Dr. Puey’s heart
– his wish has become a reality.
“The recent success of AIT in securing the overall top
rating in research impact of the country’s universities by
Thailand Research Fund (TRF), is one of the best gifts
we can give to Dr. Puey for his birth centenary celebra-
tion,” said AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukul-
chai, marking the day.
Dr. Puey played an instrumental role in transforming the
former SEATO Graduate School of Engineering into to-
day's Asian Institute of Technology. He was the insti-
tute’s inaugural chairman, serving as Chairman of the
AIT Board of Trustees from 1968-1973. He also helped
in securing a permanent campus location for AIT from
the Royal Thai Government.

AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok- Nukulchai (left) receiving the TRF Grand Award from TRF President, Dr. Suthipan Chitpimolmas. AIT has been ranked among the best universities in the world in three disciplines, according to the QS Top Universities 2016 Rankings by Subject released on 21 March 2016. Further, AIT’s faculty has also been ranked 240 in the field of Engineer- ing and Technology. President Worsak receives Thailand Research Fund (TRF) awards QS has rankedAIT among the top 151-200 universities in the world in the field of Civil and Structural Engineering. In the field of Envi- ronmental Sciences, AIT is ranked among the global top 201-250, while in Computer Science and Information Systems, it is ranked among the top 351-400 universities in the world. “The rankings reaffirm our global standing, and they reinforce our status as a premier international institute based in Thailand,” AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai said. Besides emerging near the top in three subjects across the globe, AIT is also ranked among the top five universities in Thailand in 14 out of the 36 sub- jects that were evaluated by QS. “AIT’s performance is remarkable considering the fact that it has even been ranked in subjects where it does not have a dedicated field of study, but only offers them as minor courses. This is a solid indicator of the interdisciplinary nature of its education and research,” Prof. Worsak added. The QS Ranking by Subject (2016) is based on four indicators — academic reputa- tion, employer reputation, citations per paper and H-index citations.
